Chart-a-Thon 2023: Day 3, Slot 2 – “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” by Coldplay
“Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” is an album that perhaps needs no introductions – after all if you were alive at any point in the mid-late 2000’s it was impossible to avoid the oversaturation of its title track on radio airplay. But while it could be easy to dismiss “Viva la Vida” as radio-friendly pop sludge in an era where Coldplay’s stylings were the dominant force in mainstream rock, the album shows a considerable amount of sonic depth. Wrapped in a high concept revolutionary pastiche and produced by the amazing Brian Eno, “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” crosses genre boundaries with ease, sporting luscious string arrangements, melancholy piano passages, catchy guitar hooks and bombastic harmonies, all in one cohesive package.
To that end, I present you all with the newest addition to the ongoing Album Series of releases: Seven new tracks to add to your Rock Band library. Gather your band together for the long form rock anthems of “Lovers in Japan” and “Yes,” then take it back down a key with the light ambience of “Life in Technicolor” and the pop-rock stylings of “42” and “Strawberry Swing.” And don’t forget to finish off with the swelling crescendo of “Death and All His Friends,” the other title track from the album. Some artists are content to have one perfect title track on an album – Viva la Vida has two.
