An Athens Encore – David Byrne!

You’d think the Best Kept Secret series was the end of it – but somehow, yeah I might not be totally sane, but barely a week after the festival I found myself on a plane to Athens for an opportunity I couldn’t pass up: David Byrne.

The Talking Heads frontman is one of the last living and performing of my favorites that I didn’t get to see yet. And I heard so much praise about how special his shows are, with the cool setup with the entire band walking around the stage, and when I saw he’s performing in such a convenient location to me, I couldn’t pass it up. So here we go!

The entire trip was actually just one night – the night of the concert. I arrived early and of course got my front row spot. After the lovely Nation of Language opened up (sorry no customs from them), Byrne took the stage and played an amazing set full of Talking Heads classics and his (fantastic!) solo material. This pack includes 9 songs from the show – 4 Talking Heads ones, including my new favorite “Nothing But Flowers” (sadly no multitrack – impossible to separate those layers of guitars by Johnny Marr!), the Stop Making Sense version of “Slippery People”, the beautiful early “Air” and the great “Houses in Motion” from their classic “Remain in Light”. Plus great songs from Byrne’s latest “Who Is the Sky?”, an album of such fun observations and energies, including a duet with Paramore’s Hayley Williams on “What is the Reason For It”, the amusing love song to your flat “My Apartment is my Friend” and lead single “Everybody Laughs”. We’ve got two Byrne classics – “Strange Overtones” from his Brian Eno collab, and 2001’s “Like Humans Do”. And finally, two older Talking Heads releases upgraded to multitracks – “Heaven”, and the all-time great “This Must Be the Place”!
