Great releases, but what shines brightest for me so far are the Big Star songs. Thanks a lot! Looking forward to the rest!

This Could All Be Yours by Guster has been published in the database and removed from this thread.

Added Caution by The Killers to the original post. I’m going to try to release this ASAP so Harmonix doesn’t nail me a week later.

I like Guster. I hope I made that clear when I released Satellite two years ago. So I’ll get right to the point: here’s a new release featuring Guster. See? Visualizers don’t lie.

This Rock Band 3 custom song, This Could All Be Yours by Guster, is my sixty-fourth release overall and my second to feature the band. I doubt it will be the last, but considering the gap in time between this song hitting the database and my release of Satellite, well, you might have a bit of a wait ahead of you. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

This song is fun and you will enjoy it. You can watch the video below, which will enable you to agree or disagree with me.

            Features:
            Fully custom venue from scratch
            Vocal chart from scratch
Dryvox lip sync for all three vocal parts
            Vocal tonic note
            Reductions for all instruments
Numeric ID for Wii leaderboards (Song ID 1649200064)

Special thanks to Chainsaw Octopus, grubextrapolate, and BornGamerRob

This custom was created while simultaneously working on a significant upgrade to the original release of Satellite, version 2 of which is now available in the database. I took all the knowledge I’ve acquired in the past two years of compiling customs and applied it to both of these releases. The venues, one newly created and another significantly updated, both shine and fit the songs very well. The lip sync for the new one turned out wonderfully and Satellite’s has been significantly improved. But Satellite has its own post in this thread, so I’ll try to stick with This Could All Be Yours… right after I send a shout-out to Emotional Flight for greatly improving and expanding upon my original keys and pro keys charts. Thank you very much! <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

            Drums were charted by me.

FOOLED YOU! I was not involved in any drum charting. The chart was finalized by Chainsaw Octopus, of course. And it’s great. So go smack and stomp things. But Chainsaw is useful for other things, too, believe it or not. He was heavily involved in finalizing the guitar chart featured in this song, even moreso than grubextrapolate, who also lent his time to figuring out how to make a single chart from, according to grub’s calculations, four or five layered guitars. I extend a large amount of gratitude to both of them for helping me release quality charts, both in these current releases and many from the past.

There were great debates held on how to make the guitar chart fun, fair, and accurate. Chainsaw and I spent much of this evening playtesting the guitar and making minor tweaks two days after we thought everything was done. Playtesting is actually a lot of fun and I recommend all authors do it. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” /> Feedback is more than welcome for the guitar chart, especially confirmation that we made the right choices. We’re only people, and there’s not much anyone can do about that.

Playtesting the bass parts for the new and updated songs was a blast and I encourage you try each chart! I was groovin’. Thank goodness no cameras were active. I’ll let the gameplay videos speak for themselves.

Vocals are precisely charted (of course!) and harmonies are delightful. This song has something to offer every player, but the vocals are where things shine (which is the usual for my releases). And I don’t have much more to say beyond that. This release took much longer than I thought it would, but that’s always how it goes. Releasing quality products takes time. I hope you’ll agree that it was worth the wait! Enjoy the hard work put forth by my collaborators and don’t forget to send thanks their way. This release wouldn’t be half as awesome without their input.

If you’d like to contribute improvements or animations or if you have suggestions for how I can do better, please contact me. Thanks for reading. Now, into the great unknown we go, Horatio!

Well, I’ll be darned! All this time I’ve been hiding stuff with camera cuts. :tinfoil:

And you’ll still need to do that, unfortunately. I’m still editing my post for more details and clarity, but yeah, in the above example the guitarist/bassist/vocalist may be lip syncing the “Ah” we implanted. And that “Ah” may be mangled just as the beginning of the phrase “Maybe you will always be” was getting mangled.

This is less of a nuisance when it’s just PART VOCALS and HARM1 singing without HARM2 and/or HARM3, because you can just avoid showing the vocalist. But if you’ve got the situation above as I do, you’ll probably want to focus on the drummer in the lead-up to the problem area or do some long or behind shots. Conveniently, I already had that spot covered with space_woosh <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

Just read your write up on the Mowgli’s 2-pack, interesting read and it sounds like it was hell for you. If it helps at all, you made a group of 10+ people very happy.

I’ve been listening to the songs ever since because I just love em so much, needed some feel good tunes and they hit just the right spot. I’ve also been playing it randomly and a lot of people are taking notice and asking what song is playing. Making a lot of Mowgil fans out here because of you!

Anyways, thanks for your continued support of this site and this game, I know not a lot of people don’t bother to comment but I’m sure there’s a lot more that appreciate your (and every single charter tbh) efforts. Thank you!

I appreciate this very, very much. Knowing that a custom (or two, in this case) turned you and your friends into fans of a relatively unknown indie band is my entire goal when charting and releasing these songs. I hope you’ve also checked out my past releases, too! I know not every song is gonna click with every person, but there still might be another gem waiting for you out there. Lightning can strike twice…

I’ll never stop promoting and proselytizing and championing the underdogs of the music scene. I have a lot of gasoline left in my charting tank, but your comment tops off the reservoir. Thank you!

I’ve extracted the bass and guitar tracks of this MIDI, they’re definitely accurate to each note of the actual song. Is there any converter that will take the MIDI data of the track and “squash” it down to an accurate Expert bass/guitar track?

You have to squash it manually, but it’s worth it!

Your extensive documentation is certainly encouraging to new people who may be interested in authoring(me). I just spent 2hrs reading this entire thread and previewing each of your songs. 19 new songs to play <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

Glad to hear about the incidental encouragement! You might remember that I got my start in customs authoring by helping other authors fix their vocals charts’ incorrect pitches. From there it grew to creating simple pro keys charts, then bass lines, and then guitar charts. I’ve dabbled in drums once or twice when preparing Guitar Hero conversion charts for renowned drum authors to fix properly, but it isn’t something I understand or am interested in.

The reason I mention all this? If you want to learn authoring, start small. Authoring full-band customs right off the bat is a bad idea because:

                    1. It’s honestly overwhelming, if you want to do it right… and you should!

                    2. No matter what, your charts won’t be that great. You’ll hate your charts as you learn more. But you will get better, if you stick with it long enough.

                    3. It isn’t easy and takes a lot of time.

(That doesn’t mean you have to select a song missing common instruments. It just means you don’t have to author everything at first. You can always update your custom later with new additions and fixes!)

Advice I’ve given in the past to aspiring authors is to choose a hip-hop song you like and try to author that. Why?

                    1. It most likely has a steady BPM, so there’s nothing to tempo map. I’ve never tempo-mapped a song myself, because I have crippling OCD <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

2.The vocals are likely unpitched, so you can get a feel for how vocal charting works.

                    3. Instrumental parts likely repeat, so there’s the opportunity to copy and paste gems and reduce the workload.

I’ve been given so much feedback and advice that has helped me grow as an author. Everybody here is very helpful, and I try to pay that forward. You should start dabbling!

I’m also very glad to hear about the downloads! Whenever I chart a song, I keep in mind the Rock Band playability factor and the party factor. Does this song have instrumentally interesting parts? I hope so! But if not, my customs at least have to be crowd-pleasers… even if they’re obscure and unknown. They’ll grow on you, if you give them the chance <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

Thanks for the reply, and good luck on your journey!

The latest plan: release one video for each venue featuring all lighting effects and all relevant camera cuts in addition to one video showcasing all post-processing effects. Here is the lighting first video. If this meets with approval, I will begin rolling out videos for all other venues. Feedback, as always, is appreciated.

These write ups are awesome. I love reading about the amount of time and effort you’ve poured into your releases

I appreciate that! Every custom I release is a labor of love… which sometimes ends up with me temporarily hating the songs, as with the latest Mowgli’s releases <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />. All the speed bumps I hit with those two customs really demoralized me, but once I start something, I try to see it through. I learned an important lesson I’ve been preaching to other authors for a long time, but thought I could skirt around… which is: don’t bite off more than you can chew! Even a 2-pack is too much for me to handle at once. I need to hyper-focus on one custom at a time and finish it completely, then work on another song. Juggling even a mere two projects makes me waste time checking and re-checking things to make sure they’re done correctly. And, hell, I had to update those Mowgli’s songs a week after release to include forgotten practice sections and animations. D’oh!

I compose the write-ups to document how everything got made, because I don’t think I’ve ever released a custom without at least one collaborator. Those contributing authors deserve to have their work highlighted, so I try to do them justice. I also hope my chronicling inspires other forum-goers to dip their toes into authoring; I got my start helping other authors with vocals, and now those same authors help me with charts! Drums in particular <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

Hoping to have a new Guster song to release this week, along with an update to my first Guster release. We’ll see how everything goes!

Highlight the gems of the entire part and use the quantize function to lock the notes onto the grid. Let me dig up a screenshot.

Here we go. Fresh for you.

Make sure to set the grid to whatever you desire, be it 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, etc. If this is your first time using the quantize function, save your work before you use it, because you might want to undo your changes and you might crazy while undoing (I often do!).

Yeah, I’ve had many conversations with others (Hi, Duhterminate!) about charting Caution. I’d love to, but I have a strong feeling it’s coming from Harmonix, and they already nailed me once with Juice by Lizzo. So that’s a strike against charting it.

But the thing is, I’m a Wii user… so I’ll never get to purchase and download the theoretical official version anyway. So I’m waffling…
