It’s been a long time since we had a new Rock Band or Guitar Hero game. If you’re like me, then your old plastic instruments from those games are collecting dust in a corner, sitting unused year after year. Rock Band 3 launched all the way back in 2010, and we’ve not had a follow-up since then.

But Rock Band developer Harmonix hasn’t given up on the franchise. Although there’s been a lack of recent peripheral-based music games, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos affirms that the company has plans for future Rock Band titles on the current-gen consoles.

In an interview with GameReactor, Rigopulos explained the developer’s approach to the series. When asked specifically if Rock Band with plastic instruments will return, Rigopulos responded, “We think about it all the time because we love Rock Band, and we’re waiting for just the right moment in the new generation of consoles to bring it back.”

He continues: “Someday, when the time is right, we will want to bring it back.”

So there’s a strong probability that we’ll see a return of the plastic instruments during this console cycle. Maybe just not right away, considering Harmonix is developing several different games simultaneously.

The company’s gesture-based music game Fantasia: Music Evolved launches October 21 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. At this year’s E3, Harmonix announced Dance Central Spotlight for the Xbox One, which will be released by the end of 2014. It also recently revealed music shooter Chroma for the PC. In May, the developer Kickstarted a sequel to the PS2 classic Amplitude, which should have a 2015 release.

What do you want to see in a new Rock Band? Do you want even more instruments, or would you like a return to the basics of the genre? Let us know in the comments.

Recycling the same old quote from Alex. Don’t hold your breath.

I remember reading a review of RB3 before it released and after listing all the wonderful new features RB3 offered, the writer asked the question, “What more could you need from the Rock Band franchise?”

Personally, for me, nothing. What other instrument would we need, a saxophone? A violin? A Theremin? And what additional features do we really need? We can already make any song we’d ever want, so what else is needed from this franchise (aside from replacement guitars > )?

I think the biggest thing I want is a better story mode. I would like something that improves on the story mode in RB1, instead of regressing like the last 2 iterations have done. That is it, though.

The only thing I’d like to see added is the ability to have all 5 band members on stage at once. Not really an important gameplay thing, but just something that has irked me since the release of RB3.

Less glitches, LH Pro Keys parts, 4-part harmonies, 2x Pedal built into all songs as a additional difficulty option, better character creator without having to unlock stuff via goals, instrument creator similar to Guitar Hero, improved Pro Guitar/Bass interface, more gamemodes (bring back RB2 tour mode and battle mode!), less glitches, etc.

Oh yeah that too, making venues is a bitch as it currently is due to having to stack camera shots so much

          […] 4-part harmonies […]

Please don’t make me go back and make an RBHP:HP.

A better tour mode, score duels and tug of war (like in RB2) and support for more than just one real guitar.

          #424469

Bandfuse/Rocksmith style real guitar and bass support.

Plus general updates like custom genres, “band leader” local mode, only show common songs in online play, quick search functions on all peripherals (can’t do it with the stage kit or the MPA).

These all sound like good improvements to me.

Add Lego Rock Band’s no kick, for those so inclined.

                Some of my thoughts/ideas I’ve kicked around for years;

I think a lot of the scoring should get an overhaul. Assuming there were still five-button guitars, I think a lot of that can be improved. If you hit HOPOs without strumming, you should get bonus points.

If you nail a tough fill on drums, you should get a bonus.

They definitely need to implement the dynamic difficulties like Rocksmith has. No more EMHX. The game determines how hard the song should be based on what your ability has been so far. If you can 100% everything but fail on the solo, the solo difficulty is then scaled down, and you get less points.

The story mode should be based around a single character that you create. That character has cash assigned to just them. You start out with nothing. You inherit shitty guitar or drumset in the game, and have to start from the bottom. You play small clubs and bars, get almost nothing. You have shitty bandmates, and you eventually need to replace them with more talented ones.

You could even include traits for those band members. Some play one genre better, or some don’t like playing simple songs, some want a bigger cut of the $. Introduce a chemistry that the band has. The more you replace members, the harder it is to get more popular and successful. Eventually the band gets better and you move up through the ranks and play bigger songs.

This is where the soundtrack is key. They need to have the biggest on disc setlist of all time. Assuming nothing transfers over from the previous gen, they would still have to go back and license some of the same tracks again. Maybe their previous relationships with certain bands/labels would help with some of the licensing. They would need to include at least 100 tracks from more well known artists. If you still can’t get Zeppelin/Muse/etc., that’s too bad, but get bands people know. Even cover today’s pop. I’m sure a lot of fans would be pissed seeing tracks from Bieber or One Direction or Katy Perry, but it will help sell copies, and keep it relevent among a younger audience.

Include country, metal, grunge, classic rock, modern rock. Don’t play it safe like they did with RB1. Make the popular artists the more diverse we’ve ever seen.

And then, for the rest of the setlist, get as many independent artists as you can find. I’m talking at least 200 tracks. Nothing’s stopping them when you can get the tracks for so cheap. Get Harmonix bands. Get bands from RBN. Find up-and-comers from around the globe. Once again, include all the genres you can. As long as you have multi-tracks, and the songs are at least somewhat enjoyable to play in game, get them in.

With a 300+ song setlist on disc (yes, 300), it will prevent the game from getting stale and will open up people to new music. It will also be a great selling point.

Expand on the social aspect. Blitz was heading in the right direction, but drop the Facebook nonsense. Have a system where co-operative and competitive modes are seamless. Bring back score wars. And with dynamic difficulties, it would make playing with randoms a lot more enjoyable. No need to worry about someone picking expert when they can barely do hard. Or someone wanting to restart a minute into a song because medium is too easy.

Integrate pro G/B the same way Rocksmith does. Hell, by the time the game comes out, maybe they join forces. Include the USB cable.

If this game does indeed come out, it will need to be an entirely new experience. Not RB3 with a couple new features. If it wants to be successful at all, it will need to be the greatest rhythm game of all time, or else the gaming community will let out a collective yawn as it fades into obscurity once again.

It would need to make us laugh at shitty our old plastic guitars are, and make us question how we managed to enjoy the previous Rock Bands, considering how simple and inferior they were.

Those two would literally kill all enjoyment of the game for me, the other ideas sounded solid though

There are numerous things I would like in a RB4, the biggest though by a country mile will be the ability to transfer my songs.

I don’t think I am alone with this (and I’m not taking about customs) I have literally spent hundreds in the store and I probably wouldn’t move away from RB3 if I had to start from scratch.

                  Themes.

I mean seriously, I would love to actually have themes unlocked. For example, I wouldn’t mind playing a “Lego” theme on Rock Band 3… Or a “Beatles” theme… That sort of stuff.

Also, ability to choose which “level” of stage. I kinda hate playing a huge long list of Metallica songs or AC/DC songs in an arcade where it would be so awesome to play them on a huge stage in front of a huge crowd.
