Chart-a-thon Day 8 Slot 2: Bones Garage (Or: Yaniv’s shameless self promotion!)

So, this is a weird one. I’ve done lots of write ups like this, but for my own band? It’s definitely unusual. I’ve been charting here for years, but never really shared my own music, but I’m part of the community here, and this is as good an opportunity as any, I guess. I’m quite nervous about this! But yeah, it’s time.

So who are we? We’re an indie-rock band from Tel Aviv, Israel. We are heavily influenced by post-punk, surf rock and shoegaze, combining them with personal and relatable lyrics with a hint of politics/social justice. We played several big festivals such as Glastonbury, SXSW, all Points East plus a bunch of local stuff here, and we released 3 albums to critical acclaim.

The songs released here are mostly from our lighter, more surf-influenced music, rather than the 7 minute shoegaze epics (those just don’t translate as well to Rock Band, sadly), but you do get a bit of the darker stuff too with “The Future of Illusion”.

I’m really not good at self-promotion, so you’ll have to listen for yourself I guess! Let’s go.

If you just listen to one song, choose this one!

Why? because whether we like it or not (I kinda do), “Great Rift Valley” is sort of our signature song. It’s the one song that always gets the audience cheering and dancing live, it gets into Spotify playlists, and it’s fun but also quite dark in it’s way. It’s the first single from our second album, “Oi Ma Yeah”, the phrase which is also the repeated hook of “Great Rift Valley” (it roughly translates in Hebrew to “oh, what’s next”), it has tons of cool guitars and it details some thoughts about being born into a huge political conflict that influences your life daily, and you can’t do anything about. It’s as close to the Bones Garage experience as we can pack into 5 minutes, and it’s just a song I’m immensely proud of and love deeply, even after playing it literally thousands of times.

The next song on “Oi Ma Yeah”, “Topolopompo” is another crowd-favorite, for it’s catchy surf riffs, guitars arpeggio, energy, and really dark and violent lyrics! That’s what we do, I guess. It’s also a huge fan favorite live.

Taken from our first album, “Massacre/Dance”, “Seasons Break” is the first song we ever recorded as a band. It’s a cool, catchy, surf-based tune, while also being an ode to the city of Tel Aviv – the best city in the world! (at least if it wasn’t so damn expensive). This is early Bones Garage, more innocent, naive and hopeful, and a lot of fun.

For our latest album “Poland”, “Fairy Tale” is an anthem of support for the LGBT+ community, and anyone who feels different. Based on lyrics by a local poet Eran Tzelagov, “Fairy Tale” uses fairies, unicorns and fairy tale image to hammer one message home – we can all feel free to fall in love with whoever we want. Musically, it’s sunny, bright and has some lovely harmonies, and a catchy chorus.

Clearly the darkest song of the pack, “Illusion” build slowly from a lone guitar and haunting lyrics, before it explodes into a distortion filled rocking climax, and it’s all based on some terrifying and beautiful lyrics by poet Eran Tzelagov – this time displaying a much darker side to his writing than “Fairy Tale”. It also features some rare lead vocals by our guitar player Eden Atad. It’s a song that starts from nothing and explodes into everything, and it’s one of our best.

So “The Run” started as a normal song, and slowly became a rousing live anthem that gets faster, more aggressive and more insane whenever we play it. So it made sense to chart a live version! This is the performance you’ll be playing:

This is us at a major local festival in Israel. I’m the dude with the Telecaster that’s abusing his guitar. If you want to try and give it a go, download the custom!

And that’s it, hope you had fun and liked our songs 🙂 See you soon!

    1. Thanks! Feel free to look us up in Spotify.

If you want those 7 minute shoegaze epics, look out for “Homo Sapience Love”, “It’s Quiet” and “Then”. Easily some of our best songs, “It’s Quiet” is a particular favorite of mine (though not as shoegaze-y as others).
