So have any of you guys gotten a chance to open up/dig in the RB4 song/game files yet and see what all is there? Any new surprises? Are the keys charts still in the RB3 songs? What about pro guitar/bass charts?

It’s impossible to access the game files at this point. Xbox 360 RB files used STFS containers, which by the time we started doing customs were already understood and accessible. PS3 files weren’t even compressed or packaged, just loose files in folders. So in last gen consoles accessing files was easy.

Current gen consoles are different. Xbox One uses new containers which are encrypted, so we can’t even get at the file that holds the RB4 stuff inside. This is the equivalent of not being able to open a CON file. Until we can, there’s no looking at what’s inside to see the difference. We have a similar situation with the PS4 containers.

I’d like to think that with all the cost-cutting HMX didn’t change the formats too much, but who knows.

As far as the game itself goes, the formats (textures, models, etc) are probably all new, since they made a new “Forge” game engine to replace their old “Milo” engine.

For the charts and such, the formats probably haven’t changed too much, save for the addition of freestyle guitar cues and vocal freestyle cues. Don’t forget they showed people working in REAPER in the promo videos from earlier this year, so I doubt they changed the whole authoring process. That being said, there was no evidence of keys authoring in those videos, so that remains a mystery.

The Xbox One legacy DLC files, at least, are much bigger than their Xbox 360 counterparts, so either the new console requires a lot more fluff in a DLC package or there’s more content in there for Rock Band 4.

Once we can get inside the PS4 or Xbox One files, we can prove or disprove these hypotheses.

When, at the very least, do you think you will be able to decrypt the new containers?

I’m not any good at decryption, so I won’t be figuring that out myself. But will someone? Sure. It’s just a matter of when.

I’m curious to know if the legacy DLC songs got the keys tracks stripped out of them for the RB4 versions.

So now being able to use external hard drives to copy over and store game / dlc files, it is possible to access the song packages. Like Nemo mentioned though, they’re not in STFS format So I have yet to find any software that will allow them to be opened, let alone extracted and edited or played with. I imagine at some point there will be a way, or if anybody knows of any software that will open an xbox one file even just for veiwing then I’d be excited to check it out.

It is not possible to open Xbox One or PS4 game content on your computer. The content packages require the hardware-based encryption within the game console itself in order to be mounted or extracted.

That said, if you buy Rock Band VR, you can access those files as they are simply installed to your PC hard drive and the formats used there are basically identical (with some extra extensions) to the RB4 files.

How to use Xbox One External Storage Device Converter:
                1) Plug in your XBOX One external storage device into your PC after it has been formatted for use on your console.
                2) Open the application and choose “SCAN”.
                3) Your device should be listed. Right click and choose “Enable PC Mode”.
                4) Choose scan again; and you should see that your device is now in PC Mode.
                5) Disconnect/Reconnect your drive and Windows should now mount the drive allowing you to read/write the files stored by the console. You could also do a refresh in Disk Management instead of disconnect/reconnect.

When you are ready to return the device to your console:
                1) Open the application and do a scan.
                2) Choose your device, right click and “Enable XBOX Mode”.
**This needs to be done before your console will recognize the drive. If you forget to do this; your console will ask to reformat it (losing all your data).

                *WARNING*
This application scans and makes modifications to the MBR of the drive. I take no responsibility for any damage done to the device or loss of data caused by utilizing this application.
This has been tested on only a handful of drives; so there could be issues. Use at your own risk.

No, as I said, it cannot be done. What you have pasted here are simply instructions to access an Xbox-formatted disk on PC, nothing more.

Thanks very much for the info Maxton! and yes as also stated above you can access an external hard drive containing the xbox one files, but that does nothing to give you actual access to opening the files Does Rock Band VR have the same purchasable DLC content as the console versions? I’m guessing even if it does I would probably have to buy the dlc again on PC since owning it on the xbox wouldn’t be recognized. lol

In any case this is all good information to have, thank you!

                  **EDIT**

I see the DLC content is totally separate and most of it looks like things I already own through the xbox market. lol It would still be fun to play it in VR though. haha
