RB3: a musical game or gamified music?

What is RB3 for you: mainly a game that uses music to provide fun (“game first”) or music turned into a game that is meant to serve musical purposes (“music first”)?

You can tell that by taking a look at some of your own preferences, for example:

      – how much do you care about the charts being a correct representation of how the song is played by a real instrument VS how much is “fun” or challenging to get a high score

      – how much interest do you have on Pro instruments

      – how much do you care about animations, venues and general graphical appearance

      – how much do you care about overdrives and other in-game concepts

I can for example tell I am firmly in the “music first” camp by the fact that I mostly play Pro Drums (with eDrums and MPA), Pro Keys, and sing. I neglect 5-lanes instruments (although I still have some fun with them) and play them only when someone else is already on the drums + the song has no Pro Keys + I am too tired to sing.

And also I can tell from the way I charted my few customs, wanting them to be full-band or nothing, being quite unforgiving to myself in the choice of notes, feeling frustrated every time a compromise is necessary (like dealing with the Pro Keys limited range), but then also wanting to get done with overdrives and venues a bit too quickly

So what’s your own take on RB3, game first or music first?

Same here. Music first all the way. That doesn’t mean I won’t chart overdrives/fills, Auto-EMH and review lower difficulties, etc..but I really don’t enjoy doing those things, it’s the biggest hang-up for me getting stuff released. I even enjoy tempo-mapping compared to those things… I also play on Pro Instruments (Drums). My wife plays drums on medium for most stuff though so I have to be conscious of that at least.

I got into Rock Band for fun. I still remember when I first played Guitar Hero at an arcade … I dragged the Mrs over to play and we were both like, “we have to get that!”

We got a 360 and RB3 not too long before RB4 was coming out.

I am starting to regret selling my Pro guitar as that is something that I think I would like to start tinkering with again. I’m working on a song that I would like to be able to have a go at on Pro guitar (of course I would have to learn to chart that).

I play Pro drums but I am not a great drummer by any means. I can play guitar and bass IRL but play 5 button guitar on RB.

My experience of RB is game first.

I started music back in late 90s and in 2005, Guitar Hero introduce me into more bands I never heard off. RB3 is pretty a musical game to me. I don’t care if the players are better than me. I like playing songs that are fun. If I sell my Rock Band stuff, I will regret it. Now, we have customs. That mean I can spend money on other things like clothes, food, merchandise, etc. I don’t need to spend money on RB3 anymore.

Kind’ve a mix I suppose? I want the pro drums/keys to be really precise, because I feel like they can be. Otherwise, as long as things aren’t under charted, I don’t mind how they are as long as they’re fun.

Just got an E-kit recently and loving it. I have no interest in getting pro guitar because the joy of these games for me is shredding something insane on the guitar, without having to spend years learning 1 song. I can just sightread something nuts and enjoy myself and go for FC’s.

As for venues and animations, I would care that they at least sync up, but I transitioned from RB to Clone Hero so none of that matters anymore as I’ve got custom backgrounds and music videos going on instead.

Absolutely love this franchise and the music it has brought to my attention over the years.

I started playing Guitar Hero 2 and 3 and when I got Rockband 1 back on release I didn’t really care about drums. However after a few months I found myself gravitate toward the drums and fell in love with how challenging and rewarding it felt to nail songs. I eventually got the Ion drums around Rockband 2 (before pro drums) and tried to play as accurately as I could. Once RB3 came out with support for the pro drums it already felt natural.

Since then I find myself appreciating drums in music far more than I probably ever would have. I wish I could go back in time and tell the younger me to get into drums. I honestly only purchased an Xbox One to get RB4 (even though it’s arguable worse than RB3) just so that I could continue to play online with people and made friends with strangers who also had the passion to purchase way too many songs.

I have discovered a myriad of bands/tracks that I probably wouldn’t have appreciated as much without playing these games. To this day I can’t believe I haven’t stopped loving this game. I unfortunately went almost a year and a half without getting to play drums since I had moved to a smaller place thousands of miles away (and only brought my RB4 and guitar) and the first thing I did when I moved back home during this covid fiasco was get back on my busted old Ion set.

I’m very thankful that this site continues to exist along with all the dedicated charters. I was inspired to finally attempt charting myself this year and hopefully I will continue to do so for a long time.
