here are ten songs (and many more to come!) I updated with rhythm guitar parts, I started my own thread since I didn’t get any response from any hire ups with regards to adding these to the RBHP keyboard fork, so here they are!

simply drop the folder into the optional upgrades folder, right next to the keys upgrades, pro strings, etc. and when adding these upgrades just add them last, after the keys and all that good stuff. I haven’t run into any snags doing it this way, but I encourage anyone to message me if these upgrades don’t play nice somehow.

Hey there.

 

Allow me to apologize publicly for not responding to your PM. I did get it, but I wasn’t sure how to reply, because it’s not a simple request to put rhythm-guitar upgrades in the RBHP. I wanted to do some thinking, and then I got distracted by other things, and with the forum no longer reminding me I had a message waiting, I forgot. For that I am sorry.

 

Before I say anything else, first of all I’m not one of the higher-ups here, just a dedicated fan like you. Second of all, I don’t manage the RBHP keyboard fork. I manage a RBHP fork. It’s true, contributors and I have focused almost completely on keys upgrades for this fork. However, there is nothing that says it can only be used for keys upgrades, and there is nothing that says it is the be-all, end-all of RBHP forks. While I do think one centralized active repo is better than many, I wouldn’t stop anyone from creating another fork of the master repo, or my repo, even if I could. One of the many beauties of open source projects is, if someone has a different goal in mind, they can take an existing project and run with it for their purposes. This isn’t to be nitpicky or to encourage you to put these upgrades somewhere else, it’s just to explain how open-source gives you some nice options even when others might disagree with you, and to let you know my clout isn’t as much as you might give me credit for. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

 

As you may already know, the RBHP started off adding harmony vocals to older songs, hence the name. Gradually it expanded to a lot of different upgrades and fixes. However, the entire time the RBHP was under espher’s care (officially the master project still is), he made sure not to offer any upgrades or corrections that would affect individual players’ scores on instruments already featured in those songs. For my fork, I decided to continue with that rule. That means I won’t add changes to existing guitar charts, solo vocal charts, etc.

 

Rhythm guitar upgrades fall into a fuzzy grey area. On the one hand, they are an additional instrument that wasn’t already officially supported in legacy songs, just like keys. On the other hand, they aren’t officially supported in RB3 either, and so they have to be kludged into the game. One way is to replace bass with rhythm, but that’s not an option for the RBHP since that would affect the scoring of existing bass parts. The other way is to put rhythm on keys. That’s better, but still clunky. In the end, the project would potentially offer two different upgrades for the same instrument slot, with no nicely automated way to distinguish one from the other in-game, and no easy way to allow players to have both upgrades available in-game at the same time.

 

Now, I’m not necessarily adverse to offering rhythm guitar upgrades through my fork. They could work well enough for people who know they now can’t just merge all the different folder sets for “optional upgrades” together without a little forethought, and it may be possible to force an in-game name change of affected songs, so that “(Rhythm Version)” gets added to the end. That and the lack of a pro-keys chart should make it fairly obvious which songs have rhythm on keys and which songs have actual keys, at least when scrolling manually through the song list. Still, in my mind rhythm guitar doesn’t seem to be quite in line with the scope of the RBHP as I understand it, which is to make legacy songs offer the same instruments as RB3 songs. However, you’re more than welcome to try and talk me into it.

Anyone else have an opinion on whether the RBHP is the place for rhythm-on-keys upgrades to official legacy tracks?

thanks for the addressing my message! I’m somewhat on the fence, on the one hand maybe it would be better if my rhythm upgrades were in a separate thread, to make a clear distinction, but on the other it would be nice if all upgrades to legacy songs were in one go-to thread, plus keep in mind my upgrades aren’t just hidden within the keys folder, it’s a separate folder right next to the pro strings, chart fixes, keys folders, etc. so it would be optional like those upgrades, not part of the main upgrade and very easy to omit if users chose to. plus I can make a big distinction as to whether those songs have any keys in the backing stem, to make sure I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes if someone were to make a keys upgrade in the future. or if you want I could just not include any rhythm upgrades for songs that don’t fall under fat halpert’s “less than 20 seconds of keys audio” rule.

 

as of now I’m confident only one of my upgrades involves a song that has any keys in the audio, afterlife, and even then I think it has barely 20 seconds worth of a strings section to play.

 

and as my final appeal, it’s important to note in the the original RBHP thread, i found this nugget being considered under the umbrella of the RBHP from espher himself:

“New chart variants, such as misheard lyrics or rhythm-on-keys (only for songs without an existing keys part).”

Okay, I’m convinced. For songs that don’t otherwise have keys, I’m willing to add rhythm guitar parts to my fork of the RBHP. I’m also sorry again for not replying sooner. I’ve got a lot of dishes spinning at the moment, including some work going into the upcoming C3X. I like to do a bit of QA on charts before adding them to the project, so I hope you don’t mind waiting a little longer. I promise you’re now in the queue!

Thank you very much to the both of you, your work is much appreciated, upgrades are an often overlooked feature this site has to offer, but possibly my favourite of all. While I’m at it I’ll leave my two cents too. I do enjoy playing pro keys from time to time, and therefore am quite happy about all the upgrades that have (evem recently!) been added to the fork. However, when I’m playing multiplayer with my housemate, there are occasions when both of us want to play guitar and no one bass, therefore I’m looking forward to seeing more songs with rhythm on keys! I think the 20 seconds rule is a wise one.

On a sidenote, do you guys know of a way of finding rhythm on keys customs on the database? Maybe by searching for (rhythm version)?

Usually putting the word ‘rhythm’ in the search is your best bet, other than that there’s no way to really seek out rhythm on keys charts. Also you should know virtually every AC/DC song charted by funkydunkleman has rhythm on keys

Concerning the Guitar hero conversion upgrades, please be sure to double check that the song ID # is exactly the same on both the CON file itself and both DTA files, otherwise it won’t work. The reason why these IDs could not be exactly the same is something that can’t be explained without a wall of text, so I’ll spare you the details.

 

*Another important note I want to make going forward is whether or not a song already has keyboard/a keyboard upgrade, as I’ve found a lot of songs that have keys, but what the keyboard is actually doing in the song is so uneventful that I chose to replace it with a rhythm guitar track (toxicity is a good example of this considering there are not even 40 notes in the whole track). In those cases you’ll want to be mindful which upgrade you are attaching last, the general keys upgrade or my rhythm upgrade, as that will be the upgrade that will show up in game for that song.

so for the dead kennedys songs I basically just duplicated the guitar track and just shifted the overdrive sections appropriately which I guess I will lovingly name “duplicate upgrades”, also I made some slight revisions to some of the older rhythm upgrades, enjoy!
