Make sure you get the C3 Custom RB3 template. Then load that from the File > Project Templates

 

Get song stems from ezstems.com to help chart by ear or isolate vocals for ReaTune.

 

Always do a google search of your song to see if someone made a MIDI of it “(song name) midi”

that could help eliminate tempo mapping and you can copy and paste a lot of sections and narrow them down to five wide on guitar/bass.

 

If no pre-made midi, look on Songsterr.com or search for sheet music to use as a guide for notes.

 

After that, just read the authoring docs on how to set everything up and chart each instrument http://docs.c3universe.com/rbndocs/index.php?title=Main_Page

 

That should be the basics for Reaper.

Pro tip, You can literally skip the routing matrix step thing, the extra plug in on another track and make life much easier by doing this:

 

Step 1 – Upload your song or youtube link to ezstems.com to get your vocal stem

Step 2 – Insert into your project, add the ReaTune FX to the vocal stem, Check the “Send to Midi Events when pitch changes” Box, go to the correct tab and choose the right Key for your song (You can find that by uploading the song file to https://www.audiokeychain.com/).

Step 3 – right click on the vocal stem in Reaper, Apply FX to items as a new take (MIDI output)

Step 4 – After it finishes, right click on the 2 take vocal and choose Take > Explode all new takes to new tracks

Step 5 – Clean up and chart and click the scale box inserting the same key you got from https://www.audiokeychain.com/

Expanding on what Sheep said. From past experiences and just watching what is and isn’t allowed, here’s what I’ve gathered

 

Studio version is official song -> Live version is OK to chart (Example: Cirice by Ghost is RB4 DLC, but Cirice (Live) by Ghost is on the database)

 

Live version is official song -> Studio version is OK to chart (Example: School’s Out and I’m Eighteen by Alice Cooper are live version in their official song versions, but the original recordings have also been charted and on the database)

 

Cover version is official song -> Original version is OK to chart (Example: Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders is official DLC, but it’s a cover. I was able to chart and release Brass in Pocket (Original Version) no problem)

 

A rerecording is official song -> Original version is OK to chart (Although going the other way is not the best to do) (Example: Love Hurts by Nazareth is a later rerecording of the same song, it’s not the original studio version. Love Hurts (Original Version) on the database IS the original recording)

Something you missed. Cover version of official DLC. No bueno.

 

I tried to see if I can release GHII version of Woman, because I prefer the guitar solo in the middle, but there was no waaaayy.

There should probably be a statute of limitations. If someone hasn’t upgraded/updated their song in a few years, it should be fair game and the public can just decide which version they want or if they want both. If those people are still around and releasing stuff, it’s good to let them know you want to add to it, but if you have to do a complete rehaul, you should release it regardless of their approval or not. No one should be able to claim a song (unless it’s already full band) and once they share it with others, it becomes open source. It wouldn’t make sense for someone to get upset anyway, it’s not like there are so many charters who feel they do a perfect job. It’s a hard thing to do and when you do know it, still a lot of it comes down to personal preferences, and even the best charters, I may prefer a different way to chart a particular section (and sometimes edit it for my own personal copy of the song but dont release it).

 

But that’s not even the situation here, since you said the work was shoddy, so they have no right to hold claim to the song. Most of the time people like that, myself included, just want to play the song and make it (because no one else did), then share it in hopes someone will hear it and be motivated to improve it.

This happened to me. The venue did nothing, no cuts, nothing (I think Anyway you want it with keys). So I had to just convert the Con using another program. Con2Live or something like that.

I make sure to point strobe effect in almost every custom song so I get the full stage kit effect. Some people just have one lighting cue in theirs and you wind up just getting a blue light the whole time.

Tweak the tempo. But that’s your choice, we have songs that work out ok even with the wrong time measures like Prince – Let’s Go Crazy.

All I play is the guitar so I wouldn’t even have a guess on how to do vocals.

 

Things have gotten a WHOLE lot easier!

Get a vocal stem of the song using https://ezstems.com/

Following these instructions on how to setup the vox to midi plugin (JS: IX/MIDI Tool II) in reaper. https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=147109

Find the key of your song with google or upload the song to https://www.audiokeychain.com/ (it also finds an average tempo)

Then when you are ready to play the song in reaper and have it record notes to the midi, open the plug in (ReaTune) in the vocal stem and choose the proper key on the “correction” tab.

 

Make sure it doesn’t change if you close the plugin (I keep it open so that wont happen.)

 

Once that process is done, go the vocals midi. Highlight & erase all the garbage notes. Join or split tubes (highlight and hit J or put red marker over note and hit S to split)

 

Click on a note to highlight it, hit L so it goes to the front, then add the text event and change the drop down from text event to lyric so it stays attached to the note. When you highlight the notes, if the text event doesn’t highlight it means they are not aligned properly. Follow the rules of about lyrics from vocal authoring about syllables and +’s and..

 

Viola, that’s about it. Technology did the hard part and you do the grunt work.
