Let’s not go down the mainstream thing before we need to. It looks like people are working on mainstream stuff anyway. And also, we worded that part of the project in a very specific way: RBN material. Before you pitch a song, *provided that you need to check* (because if we have enough mainstream material it’s all good), just ask yourself “if I saw this song in RBN, would I be surprised or not?”. Obviously we had Steve Vai in RBN and we had lesser acts as DLC, just be fair in your assessment and it’s all good. If we see too much RBN-like material we’ll step in to steer things a bit. It’s a fun and exciting project, do not pollute it with unnecessary genre wars we took care to avoid by specifying RBN material. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
January 4, 2014 at 6:48 pm #411628In the meantime, I found out that a very generous fellow on Reddit uploaded some multitracks on https://mega.co.nz/#F!OxpC0CbD!DnEcG2E6MT1HZT0gfFd-Bw (you can found a complete list here http://potzorbie.blogspot.fr/2013/11/multitracks.html)
Mostly GH/RB moggs but some interesting stuff too, easier to pick up if you sort files by size. I call dibs on Muse – Muscle Museum ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
I’m looking in to doing Katy Perry – “California Gurls” from that list. My other track just seems to be mostly copy and paste, so I’ll probably be able to do 2 songs for the multitrack pack.
January 4, 2014 at 6:50 pm #411629To clarify: From the Vault means a song we, any member of C3, released in the past (thus many people in the community know about its existence and/or have the song) and we polish up to C3 standards. Re-releasing it through C3 IS a big deal: roughly, songs released on Friday through C3 get 6-10 times the downloads a song gets when released by the author independently.
January 4, 2014 at 7:43 pm #411631I don’t really have any upcoming songs that fit the themes, so not sure I can contribute, but I just want to add – somebody PLEASE do Let Me Entertain You. I would KILL to be able to play that. I’d do it myself, but I have no experience with multitracks and there’s no way I’d have it done in time for April.
January 4, 2014 at 8:34 pm #411633For multitrack week, I plan on tackling “Ray of Light” by Madonna. Thanks to those pages posted on this thread I found a great multitrack for it, and I am excited to work on something people will recognize once again ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />
As for a “repeated artists” week, I have a few ideas in mind for songs I will work on. Here they are:
Enter Shikari – Mothership
Gerard McMann – All the Way
iwrestledabearonce – The Cat’s Pajamas
Of Monsters and Men – Dirty Paws (I will have released “Little Talks” by then).
Tool – The Pot
Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can Work
Unicron – It’s a Trap!
Wednesday 13 – Bad Things
Yogurt With Sprinkles – (Waiting on Artist for song selection and possible stems)
January 6, 2014 at 12:26 am #411693On the topic of mainstream, when I think songs and types of music for mainstream consumption, I tend to think of genres that are currently popular among the majority of the populace and, thus, acts that we would be shocked to have someone say they haven’t heard of (barring regional differences).
As of 2014, this would encompass the following genres to me:
* Pop et al (e.g. pop-rock)
* Rock et al (e.g. classic rock, hard rock, 80s-90s and some 00s metal)
* Alternative (but mostly anything from Grunge to present; e.g. I wouldn’t fit Siouxsie in here)
* Country (for a North American demographic)
* Dance/House (songs from 2011 to present, mostly)
* Rap/Hip-Hop
(Obviously, the artist needs to have had some success here too.)
These are genres that have been popular in most of the major markets over the past two or three decades, and thus fit our consuming demographic. I would be on the fence for indie rock and metal as, though they are certainly ‘popular’, only certain acts in the genre have broken out into the mainstream. Though I could rattle off a ton of popular dance/house artists, most of them are unknown to the populace at large because they were bigger/huge outside of the recent popularity of the genre — and if Random Access Memories hadn’t been a smash hit, I probably wouldn’t even consider something like Daft Punk for this, even if I’m sure ‘everyone’ knows Around the World and Da Funk. I also certainly would have been surprised to find out anyone knew who Martin Solveig or Dragonette were before ‘Hello’, even if they were both fairly successful/known to genre enthusiasts.
The quick and dirty test for this would simply be to pitch your artist and song suggestion — if three or more members of our community, with our arguably broader catalogue of musical knowledge, are unfamiliar with the artist (and it’s not solely due to something like the artist not being popular in their region), they’d be out of consideration even if they’re huge in their genre (either in the past or right now). If they know the artist but not the song, maybe we need to revisit song choice.
Now I’m not saying this is the policy at this point but it might be good to consider for any sort of ‘mainstream’ push.
January 6, 2014 at 12:46 am #411694I’ll do Earth, Wind & Fire – “September” for the multitrack day.NOOOO EBA PACK (that I need to get to).
January 6, 2014 at 2:02 am #411697My anniversary multitrack will be Tears For Fears – Pale Shelter.
January 6, 2014 at 7:52 pm #411728My multitrack song will probably be The Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater. I might switch to another DT song off the same album depending on how much trouble I’ll have with this track (The freeform section in the middle seems to be tricky to chart)
Edit: Put me down as Dream Theater – TBA. I’m strongly reconsidering CoT now, but I will be doing a DT song
January 7, 2014 at 4:57 am #411764Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can WorkThis would be my vote, from both a “one of the biggest artists from the list you mentioned” perspective and a “Two Door Cinema Club is awesome” perspective.
January 7, 2014 at 8:43 am #411767Well, I’m working on “Links 2-3-4” by Rammstein at the moment. I guess that can go in the retrospective column.
January 7, 2014 at 7:03 pm #411787I tentatively scheduled a St. Patrick’s Day pack. There are not A LOT of Irish acts but:
1) There’s definitely a few, including Cranberries, Two Door Cinema Club, U2 and a few others that I know our authors may enjoy working on.
2) It gives us a chance to go over previous festivities related packs.
3) It may be a nice diversion from the “previously released” concept while keeping a connection with our previous releases (the festivities theme).
Thoughts? I’ll be doing Therapy? – Nowhere, so that stuff like Zombie is still available.
January 7, 2014 at 7:28 pm #411790I’m all for it, though IDK what you mean by “a nice diversion from the ‘previously released’ concept.” Does that mean this is a replacement for the “old aritsts, new songs” week, or the FtV week? If it’s a replacement for the former, I’d like to see a way to keep that in, because I like the idea of bringing in songs from artists we’ve released songs from that we didn’t get to at the time for some reason.

If the fave artists pack happens (depending on how many of you will be posting songs for that) it could go on week 5 which is currently void of new songs (though RBHP will be the focus of the week).
January 7, 2014 at 8:31 pm #411800I am gonna try and do All Time Low – Umbrella and Metallica – Die Die My Darling for the cover pack, and Devin Townsend – Bad Devil for the favorite artists pack. If I get any more time after that I might try doing another Buckethead song for the previously released artists pack
