Sweet fancy Moses Znaimer. That’s amazing. I shudder to think how epic the Canada Day release is going to be if this is what you’ve got for this month.

How many of the authors on these tracks are fellow Canadians?

Thanks everyone! I’m getting more excited for this with each song that is completed.

Now that you mention it, I believe all the authors are Canadians. 3 east coasters and 3 west coasters. Same on the last pack, Crazy Canuck and Froogs (I’m pretty sure anyhow) are also Canadians. A true north ‘team’ effort!

Here’s one I’ve been toying with for a while now, all set. A catchy little number by The Ting Tings.

Everything is a go for May 31st, the Canada 150 Classic Rock Holiday. Might see you with one more new song before then, we’ll see. Enjoy!

A few words from from mortarion42:

Neil Young – Cortez the Killer

This epic from Neil Young’s 1975 album Zuma features one of the longest intros in rock, with Young’s vocals not coming in until 3:22 into the song. It also features nearly five minutes of guitar solos where Young jams out endless variations around a central riff. This three-chorder is rumored to have been written to make it easier for Crazy Horse guitarist Frank Sampredo to play along on rhythm guitar. Young hadn’t played with Crazy Horse for several years, and during that time Sampredo had taken the place of founding guitarist Danny Whitten, who had died of a drug and alcohol overdose.

“Cortez the Killer” originally had another verse that would have pushed its length out from 7:30 up to nearly ten minutes – but during the studio recording, an electrical circuit blew, halting the recording process and forcing them to fade out the song early. Neil, however, opined that he “never liked that verse anyway.”

Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat

Leonard Cohen, born near Montreal, Quebec in 1934, is one of Canada’s most famous folk/soft rock musicians, having been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also decorated with the Order of Canada, and this, “Famous Blue Raincoat”, is arguably one of his most well-known songs. The song is ostensibly about a love triangle, written in the form of a letter from Leonard Cohen to another man. Much of the imagery in the lyrics corresponds to elements of Cohen’s life – the famous blue raincoat (which was in fact his), living on Clinton Street in Manhattan (Cohen did, in the 70s) – but a lot of the song, including the identities of the other parties to the love triangle – remains a mystery. Either way, this slow, melancholy acoustic song is sure to give you chills.

    Stan Rogers – Northwest Passage

If there could be one name for Canadian maritime folk music, it would be Stan Rogers. His unforgettable, booming baritone voice defined Canadian maritime life and Canadiana music in general. Born in Hamilton in 1949, his family originally hailed from Nova Scotia, and Rogers spent many summers out east. Eventually, Rogers would become known for his wide range of songs about Canadian life, including topics such as farming the prairies, fishing the grand banks, and the wild exploration of the endless north and western Canada. While not as best-selling as Leonard Cohen or Neil Young, Stan Rogers’ contributions to Canadian music and culture cannot be understated.

“Northwest Passage” is a vocals-only, acapella number, detailing the explorations of early explorers of Canada such as the Franklin expedition. An unforgettable piece of Canadiana, and an extremely complex three-part harmony.
