Are you exporting your whole project to MIDI or just a time selection? Also, those events should be all lower caps (music_start, etc.) though I’m not sure that’s even an issue, let alone this issue.

When I export project midi I have

    “Entire Project” checked

    “All” MIDI items

“multitrack Midi file” and “embedded Tempo map” all checked. Nothing else

Like I said, I am new into doing all of this, so maybe this information helps.

I looked at the RPP you posted and all I’ll say (after being slapped on the wrist, thanks dad), is that you need to go back to the drawing board and pay more attention to the tutorials. You’re simply not doing it right.

Except for that capitalisation issue I can’t see much wrong in the RPP file, upload the MIDI you exported and I’ll try to compile it here.

Nemo will pick this up from here, it’s probably a matter of tracks to be muted but he’ll explain better.

Alright, so I’m going to try my best to be helpful because farottone asked me to.

But keep in mind years of internet trolling and a lifetime of being a dick in real life make it difficult for me to be didactic without getting agitated or upset.

            1) You need to the use the C3 template and not modify it. The RPP you posted has been modified so the tracks are minimized to such an extent it looks like they’re not there, but they are. You need to see all the tracks present. The tutorials and authoring documents tell you that if an instrument is not charted, you have to Mute that track in REAPER, so when you export the MIDI, that track is not exported. You are not Muting the tracks that are visible, and obviously you’re not Muting the tracks that are minimized so much that they’ve become invisible. So the end result is the MIDI you posted has 15 tracks in it, when it should only have GUITAR, EVENTS and BEAT, as those are the only ones charted in any way.

            2) Your EVENTS track is not done according to any of the tutorials or authoring docs. The events in the EVENTS track must follow the naming conventions given to you in the authoring docs. You have capitalized names, you have spaces in the names. That’s just not correct, and it’s part of the cause of the problem you listed in the OP. Besides the fact that they’re not correct in how they’re written, they’re also not correct in WHERE they’re placed. You have all our events either at the very beginning or at the very end of the track. Your [music_start] event must be at least 2 beats into the song. That’s the primary cause of the error in the OP. The other events must be in their correct places as well.

Since the EVENTS track is done incorrectly, the placement of notes and everything else that must be done correctly is broken.

There is no “here is your solution” for this problem. You need to get the C3 template and start again using that template. You may get away with copy/pasting the Guitar chart and tempo map, if there’s even one. But that may create new problems.

I highly suggest that before you try to author anything else, you take the time and become acquainted with all of the following resources that are available to you:

Authoring custom songs is a hobby that requires a lot of time, dedication and attention to detail. Based on the RPP and MIDI that you posted, you either did not go over all the above, or did not pay close attention to them. So either go over them now for the first time, or review them with attention to detail. If you don’t, as soon as you fix the error in the OP, other errors will appear.

Also as a note for the inevitable posts in the future about errors, a) always post the RPP, always post the MIDI and c) always copy the entire error log – you’re not the creator of the tool, you don’t get to decide which line of the log is what we need to see to help you.

Before C3 started, authoring was done by the few that could dedicate themselves to achieving decent quality customs. It was not a “everyone can do it” thing. That was before any of the above tutorials or videos were available. Then C3 came around and some of us have spent literally thousands of hours creating tools, tutorials, videos, and guides to make this accessible to more people.

The future of the customs community depends on new authors. Old authors have begun to get burnt out, myself included, and have stopped charting. So we depend on you and all those in the “Other Customs” forums to step up to the plate and continue this community. But you do the community and yourself a disservice if you don’t take the time to learn to do things well the first time.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I’m sure half the people who read this will dismiss me as they always do. But if I didn’t care, why would I spend all this time, money, and effort into helping C3 become what it has? It sure as hell isn’t for the adoration of my fans, since I have so few. And it sure isn’t for the money, since any kind of financial transaction is prohibited in these forums. It’s because I care about this game and the community that I’ve been a part of since 2011, and it bothers me when others put a minimal amount of effort and then demand results, often with nasty attitudes and lack of respect to go along with it.

Hopefully you can take this and learn from it, and hopefully others eventually begin using the search function, and come across this and also take something from it. I don’t see what else I can do to help you and those others who are just starting. Nobody held my hand, nobody held farottone’s hand, nobody held any of the other C3 founders’ hands either. Appreciate when a hand is extended to you, even if you have to reach a bit to grab that hand.
