Note: This song does not have Pro Keys charted.
Thanks for taking a look. Making this was really tough, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the hard work that goes into making content for Rock Band. Sadly it’s not perfect but I’m struggling now to fix some of my problems.
My drums have an issue at about measure 90, mainly that they go out of sync by a good second or two (far more than the youtube video shows). I’ve tried a couple of different things and then tried to change the tempo and manually sync them so it’s better than it was. I’m stumped on how best to tackle this, because shifting it all 1/8 will make it look ugly, but keeping it as is feels ugly, and I definitely don’t want that.
There are a couple of smaller errors in the drums that need cleaned up, and the keys are probably under-charted in places as well.
This song also lacks good-looking camera work and thoughtful character animation for now.
Music games are unique in that they can expose people to new genres of music that they might not have ever thought about before, and I really love that about them. I first discovered Frank Zappa playing another music game and wanted to try to share some of what I thought was great about his music – really silly and fun lyrics with extremely good music to back it up.
Working on this and seeing the final product was a lot of fun, even if it’s slightly unfinished. In hindsight, I probably should have picked a much easier and shorter song, but it has been a great learning experience. Rock Band is great and so is this community for continuing to put out such great content. Thanks.
July 22, 2015 at 1:12 am #450932Cool to see more Frank Zappa customs! From what I’ve seen in your preview video, the drums seem pretty awkward to play, but it’s also due to the song and the way the drums are played in it. Some rolls seem faster that they should be played, though: try charting them as triplets (1/16) and see if it looks better.
During some parts, the note placement seem weird, especially on keys and drums (can’t remember the exact time, it’s a 9-min song!).
Keep in mind that if the notes seem off-beat when you author them where they should be (at strong times), the tempo map is most probably at fault, rather than the note placement. So if the notes seem off to you, don’t try to shift them a bit to where it sounds, but correct the tempo map instead. I did that when I started authoring, and as a result it appeared badly on-screen and was weird to play.
There are also several kick pedal notes missing on .4.75 (one note when it should be double notes). ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
I’ll try to play the keys part later this week and see how it goes. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
In hindsight, I probably should have picked a much easier and shorter song, but it has been a great learning experience. That’s the frustrating thing about authoring: when you first start, you want to work on your favorite songs first, but if you like prog or anything with odd time signatures and drum beats, you’re gonna need a lot of time to get good results.
Anyways, thanks to you, I added a Frank Zappa song to my to-do list, and another in my game setlist! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
July 23, 2015 at 4:31 am #450987Thanks for the support! My tempo mapping is pretty messed up and I’ve tried to fix it in the past, even going so far as to try to restart from scratch a couple of times, but each time I try the tempo map starts to get very strange and I can’t seem to get it back under control. When I was having even more problems before, changing the tempo map was hiding measures in Reaper, a problem I didn’t discover until much later on which caused a lot of headache. I’ll keep plinking away at it though to see if I can make a breakthrough.
And yeah, I didn’t think this song would be so complicated when I chose it. Seventy hours of work later though…
