And here I am, with three picks from one of my favorite punk rock bands: “The Offspring”.

      The Offspring – Da Hui

From their 2003 album “Splinter”, this short but sweet thrash punk tune from The Offspring is named after the titular tough-guy Hawaiian surfers that formed in the 70’s. This song is a depiction of their general badassery, because you don’t fuck with Da Hui, lest they fuck with you.

      The Offspring – Original Prankster

This song, in premise, is very similar to their hit single “Pretty Fly For A White Guy”; similar instrumentation, with similar percussion elements; as well as a similar song structure too. Some may even call it a sequel to Pretty Fly. This one, though, deals with a young prankster that loves to cause trouble, and that eventually he’ll regret pulling those pranks.

It’s also worth noting that this is the only song in the pack with a keys part, although it’s not really anything noteworthy; it’s just a loop that plays on occassion throughout the riff and verses.

Here’s another pick from “Splinter”. This song in particular deals with someone that Dexter knows is depressed, but when he tries to help them, they try to hide it.

Fun fact: The music video was filmed with over 125 different cameras.

Did you know that out of 899 artists nominated for a Grammy Award between 2013 and 2018, only 9% were female? And that in 6 years across pop charts, females only account for 22%? And to round out the dismal outlook, in 2018 no women of color were nominated in any of the Grammy’s major categories.

So today, to show my support to those who lack industry recognition, my pack is dedicated to some Phenomenal Women of Color who continue to be an inspiration to me and probably so many others.

            First up…

Nelly Furtado – Promiscuous (featuring Timbaland)
            49135513498_90d32191ca.jpg
            DOWNLOAD LINK | VIDEO PREVIEW

In her career, Nelly has released six studio albums and sold over 40 million copies. Nelly’s third album Loose is certified quintuple platinum with worldwide sales of over 12 million. Although her family immigrated to Canada, she is of Portuguese descent, making her one of my Phenomenal Women of Color (and if you read my prior release of hers, still a serious crush). Furtado released Promiscuous in 2007 and featured Timbaland in the duet. This one is a now absolute favorite to sing and one to curse when playing the drums. Although no guitar, the keys make up for the loss.

            Next…

            Alicia Keys – Fallin’
            49135513528_20883df9a4.jpg
            DOWNLOAD LINK | VIDEO PREVIEW

Out of the gate as a sensation, Alicia’s debut album, Songs in A Minor, was a powerhouse. Selling over 12 million copies, it received critical acclaim and commercial adoration. Alicia is one of the most awarded female Grammy artists of all time (15), only behind Alison Krauss (27), Beyonce (23) and Aretha Franklin (18 and also a Phenomenal Woman of Color). The song Fallin’ received Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. And today, you get to play it in Rock Band.

            And finally…

Tracy Chapman – Give Me One Reason
            49136000251_572322251e.jpg
            DOWNLOAD LINK | VIDEO PREVIEW

This phenomenal woman inspired me to learn to play guitar irl and indirectly taught me how to play my first hammer on (For My Lover). Similar to Alicia, Tracy’s debut album was a landslide success selling over 22 million copies, with Fast Car being her most recognizable single, until…Give Me One Reason, still the top performing single of Chapman’s career. With great guitar work and wonderful vocals, this one is yours to play today.

If you love these songs as much as I do, log it as part of your tally of songs from this event and consider giving at least the $10 minimum. (or donate $10.50 and download 7 songs guilt free!) It’s all for helping the fight against cancer (Cancer Society) that so many of us have been effected by either directly or through our loved ones. I also would encourage checking out She is the Music to help the fight for equality, inclusivity and opportunity for women in music.

BUT WAIT…THERE’S MORE! Another release from Yaniv297 in 8 hours – a rock duet which references The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who and the very band playing it.

                  Here’s more Manics for you!

One of the biggest hit singles of their career, “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” is a rousing, catch duet between lead singer James Dean Bradfield and Nina Persson of The Cardigans. It’s fun, catchy, a blast to play on every instrument, and ideally sung with a partner!

This song also references a fair share of classic rock hits:

-“Trade all your heroes in for ghosts” – Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”.
-“I could have seen for miles and miles” – The Who’s “I Can See for Miles”.
-“You’re as blind as a man can be” – The Beatles’ “Nowhere Man”.
-“Your eyes stayed blue, baby blue” – Badfinger’s “Baby Blue”.
-“I could have placed us in exile” – The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street (well, that one is stretching it a bit)
And also references a previous hit by the Manics – “You Stole the Sun From My Heart” – which I also charted in the past and can be downloaded here.
Despite all the fan references, this song – like any Manic songs – has a dark side in it. The title “Your Love Alone is Not Enough” is apparently a direct quote from a suicide note written by a friend of the band, while some lines – specifically “I could have shown you how to cry” – references the disappearance/suicide of former band member Richey Edwards. The song itself is a bit of a “honeypot” to get into the band – as Wire magazine noted, it reels listeners in with something fan, uplifting and glorious – “And by the end of the year, they’ll be listening to ‘Archives of Pain'”.
                  Have fun!

Released on Feb. 25, 1980, Against the Wind knocked Pink Floyd’s The Wall out of the top spot on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. “Wind” added a callback to Seger’s past, reuniting him with fellow Detroiter Glenn Frey, who’d added background vocals to the title track from Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man way back in 1969 — and who’d attained his own level of worldwide superstardom in the ensuing years as a member of the Eagles.
The lyric “Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time” refers to the cruising speed of a passenger jet at altitude, implying that the narrator has been travelling for several months straight.

A song about buckling down and climbing up. A great keyboard intro and guitar solo fill out this classic.

A short, atmospheric piece that hammers home that you don’t need to be flashy to be awesome.

A ridiculous challenge on vocals, with purposefully out of tune singing and a gradually separating harmony line.

A song about getting over yourself and seeing the world for what it is. A catchy diddy in three parts.

A parody of West Side Story, this song has an amazing harmony section and a challenging keyboard.

A parody of Summer Nights from Grease, except with zombies. No, really.

                            I Don’t Like You

A quick paced rap battle. The drum section is filled with crazy disco flips and kick nonsense, while the keyboard has many fast and tricky portions.

                            Ducktales (Extended Version)

                            Ducktales! Woo-oo!

This reimagining of the original theme is iconic in its own right, with a stellar vocal performance by Felicia Barton.

Two friends, trapped against a wall, yet seeing each other every day.

                            The ironic foreshadowing song.
