Question about drum kits/keyboards

Hey all – i was never really interested in getting other instruments other than the regular guitar and drums but having found this wonderful world of customs has me interested now in an e-drum kit and possibly using the electronic keyboard that i already have for 2 reasons.
1) I have a PS3 with a couple of drum sets but it seems like it would be more fun to play with an e-kit and a real keyboard.
2) I am somewhat worried that my hacked PS3 will go kaput and I will be left with playing stock RB3/RB4 on my stock PS3 so getting these instruments with a PS3 adapter and an xbox adapter would allow we to use the instruments on my xbox as well
I know you need to get a midi adapter in order to use the e-kits and keyboards so my questions are :
1) can you plug more than 1 instrument into the adapters at the same time, so drums and keyboard ? Or would you need multiple adapters and can you even do that ?
2) Are all e-drum kits usable with the adapters or are there certain ones that work better ?
I am just trying to have a backup plan in case my hacked ps3/instruments die as i doubt i will be able to find a hackable ps3 at this point.
I do have a 360 so would like to be able to use that as a backup
1. You need a midi adapter for each midi instrument to use them at the same time. So you need 2 to use an e-kit and a keyboard.
2. Look for an e-kit with a midi out on the drum brain. Most e-kits have them, but some have a USB out instead, which makes things a little more complicated. I use a Yamaha DTX-plorer and it works great with Rock Band. But yes, any brain with a midi output will work.

I’ve had mine for 4 years and I only have good things to say about it. Perfect for someone looking to play Rock Band and maybe a little jamming on the side.

If you want a drum brain that has the ability to map open hi hat to blue cymbal then the Roland TD-9 for example can do that. Not every drum brain allows hi hat mapping.
You don’t *need* a traditionnal MIDI out. In case your drum brain only has USB MIDI, you can pass it through your computer using MIDI-OX to reroute the signal to a USB <-> MIDI cable and plug that in your MPA. It works with keyboards and drums, though because of how the sysex infos works on pro guitar, IIRC only the official RB squier, official RB MIDI mustang and the “YouRock Guitar” works with RB3.
Leaving this information for anyone who thinks they can’t play their instruments because it doesn’t have a traditionnal MIDI out, there is a workaround

probably worded wrong as they will probably work on all the levels but do you get to use the extra cymbals on all levels ?

I may be misunderstanding what you are asking for, but you can use the cymbals on both an e-kit and Rock Band drums without having to play pro mode. So for example, I have friends who aren’t ready for pro drums yet, but they can still use my e-kit for regular drums. If they hit the cymbals, it will register the same as hitting the Tom of the same color. There’s no difference between hitting the hi hat or Tom 1, the Ride or Tom 2, or the Crash and Tom 3. They are interchangeable in regular drums mode.

I use an Alesis dm6 with the midi-Ox. It is fun, but I also just got the symbols for the regular wireless kit and I enjoy that too. I only set up the Alesis if a group is playing. Otherwise it is a bit of a pain to run it through a laptop. Go with the midi out if you’re buying for rock band. My Alesis was one my daughters were using for drum lessons. Like most kids…they moved on to something else…
just picked up a used Alesis DM6 set for $40 and cant wait to try this out this weekend.
Cant believe i was able to get it for so cheap. It was missing a couple of things, kick drum pedal being the biggest one, but I can use the hi-hat pedal for that and everything else was just minor.
Is it possible to take a rock band pedal and use it on an e-kit ?
I was wondering if anyone with an Alesis DM6 could help me out.
Got the kit along with the pro adapter and the Roland UM-ONE mk2 usb to midi cable and installed Midi-ox on my computer running windows 10.
Pretty sure i have it all set up correctly but the kit is not registering in RB3.
Are there any extra settings that i am not aware of that are not specified in this video –
Would Windows 10 possibly be a problem ?
Would a different usb-midi cable be a possible solution ?
First thing you need to be sure of, is if MIDI-OX recieves MIDI data from your drums, and if MIDI-OX sends back that data through the out of your MIDI interface. You should all see that through the MIDI-OX interface. If the MPA recieves MIDI data, the LED near the MIDI input should blink accordingly.
Hi Alternity – once everything is hooked up and running I can see that Midi-OX is receiving signals from the kit because it displays a bunch of data and I do the LED blinking on the MPA so I assume it is receiving the data.
It is possible Midi-Ox is sending signals but not the correct ones to register as hits in RB3 ?
It is possible. To be sure, make sure when you hit the notes on your drums that MIDI-OX reads the correct note according to the button you wanna hit in-game. The list is in the MPA’s booklet.
Might be a stupid though but make also sure your MPA is set to drums.
