Since its inception, the Rock Band franchise has grown to cover a huge number of genres, including such outliers as chiptunes and classical music. We like to encourage this variety, but there’s something gutturally satisfying about a really rocking rock song, you know? This week is dedicated to those of you who like to put together the RB1 four-piece band and just shred. Weezer’s 1994 debut album is the quintessential collection of garage rock anthems, and we’re pleased to finish the whole thing. (Well, except the bonus tracks, but maybe some other time.)
And if you’d prefer to shake shake shake shake, you can do so to an incredibly metal cover of T-Swift’s “Shake It Off”. Tell your 11-year-old niece you have this song, but don’t tell her who it’s by! Fun times for the whole family.
Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • The Blue Album – It’s true that none of these are “Say It Ain’t So” or “Buddy Holly”, but anyone who grew up with this album will appreciate these songs regardless. There’s some simple, rewarding harmonies scattered throughout; some surprisingly challenging drum parts here and there; a handful of very iconic basslines; and, of course, plenty of guitar solos and chunky riffs. The eight-minute “Only in Dreams” is a special track to a lot of Weezer fans, and now you can personally play along to the huge crescendo and its amazing payoff.
  • “Shake It Off” – Arcanon says, “Death Come Cover Me is a German cover band that does metal covers of pop songs and uploads them to YouTube. They are happy to take requests from their fans. The band was gracious enough to supply me with multitracks for this release, and may provide more in the future! As a fan of theirs, I was VERY happy about that! Message me which of their covers you’d like to have as C3 stems and I’ll see what I can do. For now, enjoy their hardcore take on Taylor Swift’s hit ‘Shake It Off’!”

If you like Weezer, there’s a ridiculous number of songs waiting for you as official DLC, including the rest of The Blue Album, all of the hits from The Red Album, and pretty much every big single in between (and some after!) And, of course, if you like Taylor Swift, five of her (actual) tracks are waiting for you in our customs database, including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.
Finally, the daily posts for The Twelve Days of Customs 2014 start tomorrow! Join us every day between Saturday and the 24th for a new song reveal by a different one of our authors, culminating in a megapack release on the 25th. There’ll be plenty of good songs, good people, and holiday cheer, so don’t miss out. (Like last year, Twelve Days will not interrupt our usual schedule, and there will be a separate pack release on the 19th.)
See you tomorrow!
