Prog rock has close ties to the plastic-instrument family of games; how could it not, when high-level play of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band thrive on complex and challenging instrumentation? As such, prog rock icons King Crimson and their debut album In the Court of the Crimson King have been requested by rhythm gamers for years and years. Guitar Hero gave a tiny taste with “21st Century Schizoid Man” in GH5, but we’re proud to bring the full album to Rock Band this week in all its complex glory.
But, as usual, there’s more for you if prog rock isn’t your cup of tea — we’ve got a post-hardcore track from Enter Shikari, a popular dance song from Martin Garrix, post-grunge from Seether, and two community-made electronica numbers. Check out the preview video to see if any of it is right for you.
And don’t take my word for it! Here’s what the authors have to say about this week’s songs:

  • “21st Century Schizoid Man” – BearzUnlimited says, “The album is kicked off by ’21st Century Schizoid Man’, a chaotic hard rocker than can be described as ‘jazz metal’. One of the band’s most famous songs, it starts off with heavy guitar riffs and distorted vocals before building up to a frantic, saxophone-driven, 6/8 jazz interlude. The song has a highly varied and melodic bass part, insanely fast drums, and a ridiculous sax solo on keys.” (Also, please note that the charts are not the same as GH5’s.)
  • “I Talk to the Wind” – BearzUnlimited says, “Things then cool down with ‘I Talk to the Wind’, a mellow ballad. Despite being softer and slower, it has some interesting drum rhythms and a variety of wind instruments including two flute solos on keys, as well as a great two-part vocal harmony.”
  • “Epitaph” – BearzUnlimited says, “Next is the symphonic, mellotron-driven ‘Epitaph’, which has an epic, atmospheric sound and a great, emotional vocal performance. Drums have a unique double bass rhythm and some tricky fills building up to the song’s end. There’s also a fun acoustic arpeggio pattern on guitar.”
  • “Moonchild” – BearzUnlimited says, “‘Moonchild’ begins as a dreamy ballad but then drifts off into a free-time improvisation. This section is one of the most unique Rock Band experiences available, due to the unpredictability and complete lack of structure. Guitar, drums, and vibraphone (charted to keys) all have highly varied and challenging parts.”
  • “The Court of the Crimson King” – BearzUnlimited says, “The album is then brought to a close by ‘The Court of the Crimson King’, the band’s signature piece. The song alternates between quiet, poetic verses and grand choruses, with some instrumental interludes in-between. It features a great drum rhythm with lots of big fills, a long flute solo on keys, and fun guitar patterns similar to ‘Epitaph’.”
  • “Rainbow Factory” – NL says, “A unique sounding song with loads of catchy melodies all around the instruments that makes it a fun play without being blisteringly difficult.”

See you next Friday!

    1. There is nothing in the song itself that is directly family unfriendly I would say, as it’s really vague about the fears and horrors coming true. The story based on the song though, yeah not family friendly =P
