Welcome to 2015! We decided to start this year off with a bang — well, let’s say lots of bangs, backed by layered instrumentation in unusual time signatures. It’s a prog metal 4-pack! We’ve also got the often-requested CKY single “96 Quite Bitter Beings”, more Offspring, and RBN/ScoreHero darling Mystakin.
We’ve also got 20 brand-new Rock Band Harmonies Project upgrades from the incredibly hard-working espher, including the PAX pack, MTV2 01, Tom Petty, Jimi Hendrix, and Judas Priest. espher marches ever forward towards the bright future of a fully harmonized back catalog! Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

• “Sun of Nothing” – Bearz says, “This song features both technical metal sections and beautiful melodic parts. Guitar, bass, and drums all have very challenging parts and rarely play the same riff/rhythm for long.”
• “Monument” – farottone says, “A great prog metal composition with the usual entertaining Mark Zonder’s drumming, with a very complex bass riff and one electric guitar and one acoustic guitar solo. The rhythm version not only adds rhythm guitar to keys but shift the overlapping acoustic guitar solo to keys too for a full experience. In my mind, the best way to introduce Fates Warning to the Rock Band platform.”
• “Bleak” – Bearz says, “This song features a heavy contrast between loud, growling metal and soft acoustic breaks with harmonizing vocals. Guitar, bass, and drums all have varied and interesting parts.”
• “Lateralus” – Bearz says, “This Tool fan-favorite will take drummers all over their kit with lots of fills and shifting time signatures. Guitarists and bassists both get some cool riffs throughout the song, and vocalists have a unique and challenging part as well.”
• Quest for Purpose – Arcanon writes, “Mystakin is a one-man band who makes guitar-driven prog instrumentals. He’s also a former RBN author, having worked on many songs for the authoring group Rhythm Authors. He has also authored his own music, making five of his songs (including his The End of Progress EP) available for sale in the Rock Band store. He has co-hosted the Rhythm Authors, Heel Turn and Echo Chamber podcasts as well, with Echo Chamber being his current regular hangout. These three songs, off of his latest EP Quest for Purpose, were meant to come to RBN but did not make it in time. Mystakin has graciously handed them over to me in their near-finished state to complete and release through C3. Grab them and enjoy some instrumental goodness.”
• “96 Quite Bitter Beings” – NL says, “A Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater classic with possibly the greatest riff ever recorded, great full band fun.”
