Customs Holiday Bash Day 6, Slot 1: Yaniv’s Heroes pack – featuring Young, Springsteen, Waits and McCartney!

It’s me again! And this time a very personal project. There are some artist I kinda can’t stop authoring. I just love their music so much – even if we already have dozens of songs available, there’s always more. If you’ve been following my work, you know who those are.

This pack has started as 4 separate, independent 3-packs. For this event, I decided to merge them into my release, a tribute to my all time favorite musicians: Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Paul McCartney (standing in for The Beatles, in a way). My Mount Rushmore, I guess. So here we go: a 3-pack from each of those.

First – Neil! This is also a installment number 6 in my ongoing Young at Heart series. For this entry, the focus is on Neil Young’s softer, more vulnerable side, with his signature lovely “Countryish Ballads”. We have the heartbreakingly sincere “I Believe in You” – another classic from the timeless “After the Gold Rush” album, the swaying rhythm of “Old Country Waltz” – complete with fiddle and three way harmonies – and the beautiful acoustic-driven “Human Highway”, with beautiful Nicolette Larson.

Next up – Bruce! While his main albums are already pretty well covered (yeah I know, not completely, I’m not quite finished!), I decided to dive into the almost uncharted territory of non-album Bruce. Springsteen’s “rejects” are often better than most bands’ greatest hits, and present a fascinating alternate reality. So here goes! This pack includes the power-pop energy of “Rendezvous,” the soulful 1960s-inspired “Save My Love” (personally, I think, one of the most beautiful songs he’s ever written), and the shimmering “Janie Don’t You Lose Heart”, which was heavily considered for the Born in the U.S.A. album. If you’re a Bruce fan, you know how great those songs are! And if you don’t know them – give them a go 🙂

Time for the incomparable Tom Waits. There was no specific “theme” needed here, as Tom is a genre unto himself. This selection spans his unique career, featuring the groovy 60’s-vibe “Hang Down Your Head”, with some phenomenal guitars from his masterpiece “Rain Dogs“. Next up, the bluesy, stomp-and-holler energy of “Cold Water” – with yet another excellent guitar solo from Marc Ribot. And finally, the somber, poetic “All the World is Green” – with some great clarinet action on keys!

Finally, Sir Paul! I wanted to focus on a fascinating era: the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was a time of massive transition and experimentation for him. We have the Wings-era rocker “Getting Closer” – which absolutely bangs. Than, FINALLY, the quirky, cult-favorite synth experiment “Temporary Secretary” – yeah how come nobody did it before? and we’re closing with lush, melodic beauty of “Wanderlust.” It’s three wildly different tracks showing three great sides of Paul.

That’s it for now!
