Okay I know this might be a dumb question but….. What is CH? I tried looking to see if it was stated anywhere in here, but I didn’t see it. if it was and I missed it, I’m sorry. But was just curious what this CH thing was.

You are in wonderful company….. I also have a bit of an obsession/addiction/problem when it comes to RB guitars… But mine is specifically targeted at this bad boy right here: https://puu.sh/BlDTY/02f899b274.pngThe RB (technically RB2) Wooden Stratocaster Replica….I have one in the Sunburst (that was the first one I got) and I have that red one, I think the technical color is “Candy Apple” if I remember right. I wanted the red one…but they’re much harder to find. Only happened upon this red one by luck. But since getting the red one, I haven’t seen either of them anywhere….Craigslist, Ebay, Amazon, etc. Amazon claims they have used ones for under $200, but it’s a scam. You get the plastic Sunburst guitar.

Here’s the rundown on my obsession:

I got the Sunburst on Craigslist….I searched every city within every state in the US, checking each state closest to my location (Michigan) and radiated out from there. The ONLY one on all of craigslist in the US and Canada…was this one I got….in NJ, supposedly in brand new condition, for $75. They obviously didn’t know the true value of it…or maybe didn’t care. For me, roughly an 8-9 hour drive. What did I do? Contacted the seller, asked if they could hold it til I could make it there, and at the first possible chance…hopped in my car and drove to NJ to get it. One of the best road trips I’ve ever taken. Fast forward a bit… My Sunburst broke sort of…and in my attempt to fix it… I broke it further. It’s not beyond repair… but it is beyond my ability to repair as of right now. So, I sucked it up and played with my Hofner Bass….and then eventually, after almost a year of searching… I found this red one on Ebay. I’d searched Amazon, craigslist, every website possible to try and find another guitar. Searched FB’s marketplace shit, and ended up realizing that this red one…for almost $200….was going to be my only option. So….Dropped the $200 on it….and here I am, happy with my real-fake guitar.

If you can, if you ever find one… I urge you to grab as fast as possible, a wooden strat replica for RB. When they came out for RB…they were for the Xbox 360 only, and they sold for $400. If you could find a new one, I have a feeling they’d go for even more than that now. But good luck finding one. Lol. It’s got the best playability of any RB or GH guitar…except the strum bar. They clearly compensated too much for the mushy strum bars on the other RB guitars…this one is very stiff. So I changed both of mine out and put in the Bytes strum bar… I forget the website name, but if you want it, just Google “Replacement RB strum bar” or some such thing, and you’ll find it.

Anywho…that’s my obsession. I also enjoy tinkering with the guitars too, modifying them how/where I can to my liking.

Maybe I’m having….an airhead moment or something, I’m not entirely sure. I’m trying to get this RB3 Save Scores Viewer program to work, but having a difficult time doing so. You said that it needs the save.dat file (I play on Xbox 360) in order to show song info, play counts, etc. for the songs in my library in RB3… But how do I extract this file exactly? I tried saving my Song Cache file to my USB and every other file that was on my 360 for RB3 that wasn’t a specific song file….. So, what am I doing wrong? Is there any sort of uhh…step-by-step guide or something…that could show me how to go about getting this program to work for me? Something to show me how to get this save.dat file that it needs? Because I have no clue where it’s at, where to get it, how to get it, etc…

Anyways, thanks… hopefully this thread is still looked at, at least occasionally and someone will be able to answer my question/help me out with this.

I thought about maybe….copying my song cache from the Xbox HDD onto the USB flash drive that I use for my customs songs… But I already have my song cache on there, so it would essentially be overwriting the other one that’s there already. I’m worried that if I do that… it’ll somehow erase even more scores that I had for customs (or maybe even screw up my scores and such for non-custom songs as well…) I’m very scared to try to fix this issue, but at the same time… I want to know what caused it, so I can prevent it from happening again. I hope that someone on here has some knowledge of this issue and knows why it did this, and if there’s any hope of fixing it. There didn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to which songs had their scores and such erased. There were some songs that I put on the flash drive a long time ago that still had scores…and then there were also some songs that I had recently put on there, within the last month or so, that still had scores. But somehow, a bunch of seemingly random customs songs (it doesn’t appear that any non-customs were affected, but I can’t say with 100% certainty that this is the case) had their scores erased, like I’d never played them at all. And the scores were erased across more than one profile as well. I have another profile I play RB on occasionally, that doesn’t have Xbox Live or anything.. and never had any problems switching between the two profiles to play customs and such. So why would these custom songs somehow have their scores and whatnot erased across both profiles? It might as well have been like I’d just put them on the flash drive for the first time or something, even though that wasn’t the case, obviously. :/

This is somewhat of an old post, but… omfg, this literally JUST HAPPENED TO ME. And I want to rip my f*cking hair out. Did you ever get the issue resolved?? Did you figure out what the problem was?

I downloaded some new customs, put em on the flash drive, flash drive into 360, everything as normal and usual.. I get into RB3, and I notice…. that some of the scores are gone. It’s not like ALL of my customs suddenly had missing scores and such. But a lot of them, I don’t know how many… the scores were gone, my review for the songs was gone, it was as if I’d never played the song or done anything at all with it.

Please tell me you got this issue resolved somehow, because…. this is really upsetting me at the moment. :/

Thank you guys for all of your help with this!! I’ve actually just recently sort of… acquired a bit of extra cash, so maybe this is what I’ll put some of that cash towards. :D Thanks again for all the input and advice and whatnot! And if anyone else has any advice/opinions/input they’d like to share, feel free! If/when I do end up getting a capture card, I’ll let you guys know which one I went with.

This is the one I have : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MIQ40JQ/ref=twister_B00NTQ2JL0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Its about $150 on Amazon although I got mine for a steal on Craigslist. I only paid $70! And yes, it is extremely easy to use. Just download the program, plug in the El Gato to the console, TV, and computer, tweak some picture settings (720p, 1080p, etc.) and link your twitch account.

Thank you very much! I actually have a $50 Amazon gift card that I’ve been itching to spend, and a capture card has been high on my list of things that I was thinking of putting it towards… So maybe I’ll do that. Thanks for your input.

I have an El Gato 60 fps and I use the El Gato sofeware to stream. I’ve tried OBS, but my computer started to overwork itself. If you decide to get an El Gato and you have a lower end pc, use the software that is offered on the El Gato website.

Could you possibly link me to the one you’ve got? How much was it? How easy is it to get everything set up and get started with streaming using a capture card? I’ve got a laptop as well as a desktop and they’re both higher end, so either one should be able to handle the work. Lol.

Thanks for your input BansheeFlyer. My friend had also mentioned the brand Elgato, but only because he said he had a friend who had one of those and that he really liked it.

I did stream on my Xbox One using Twitch, which is what got me interested in possibly getting a capture card to use on my 360. I wish streaming was as easy on the 360 as it is on the Xbox One. However, I hate how streaming on Twitch on the Xbox One makes the screen smaller and whatnot while doing it….That made it a bit frustrating to play RB4, especially when I already dislike the feel and look of RB4.

When you say potential software that lets you stream…. what do you mean by that? Different capture cards have different streaming software? Which software is better, or more user-friendly and whatnot? Is there any software I should avoid or anything?

                        Thanks again for your help.

No problem. I figured that’s who the question was mainly directed towards, but thought I’d offer up my suggestion based on the same experience with that plugin for Reaper as well. Lol. I’m curious also as to what specifically that plugin is used for, or what it’s meant to do with regards to the whole authoring of custom songs process in Reaper. Any info and knowledge on the whole authoring process and info on the programs/tools/things in general is very much wanted, and veryveryveryvery much appreciated.

To confirm with FujiSkunk, yes, you can use 32-bit REAPER with 64-bit Windows 10. Using it at this moment actually.

Also while I’m here, what exactly does the W1 Limiter do? It’s been coming up as “not available” but I’ve been authoring songs just fine without it.

I can’t really answer your question regarding the W1 Limiter… I have no idea what it does exactly? But to get it to work, you have to put it in a certain folder within Reaper in your program files. Lemme check here…. hmmm… Go to your Program Files (my Reaper is in the Program Files (x86), I don’t know if yours would be the same or not? But there’s either that, or just the regular “Program Files” folder, lol), then “REAPER” then “Plugins” and the W1 Limiter plugin should consist of…two or three files total, after you download it and unzip it, I believe. Just put whatever files are there after you unzip it into the plugins folder, and it should work.

If that’s the wrong place for it, anyone is welcome to tell me where it’s supposed to go, but with it being in that particular folder, I haven’t had any issues with it not working. Before putting it into that folder, I would get that error message telling me that the files weren’t available or something. I posted the screenshot of the error message in a previous comment I’d left on here, so if you scroll up on this page, you should see it. If that’s the same sort of message you get about it, then I’d say try dropping it into that Plugins folder and see if that fixes it for ya.

I hope that helps…even if I couldn’t really tell you what exactly that Plugin does in Reaper… Lol.

I’m avoiding Windows 10 like the plague at the moment, but if it’s at least as good as Windows 7 for 32bit support, then yes, you can use just about any and all 32bit programs on Windows 10. You can even have both the 32bit and 64bit versions of REAPER installed simultaneously. Unless you plan on using REAPER for other audio projects, however, you may just want to stick to the 32bit version for simplicitiy’s sake.

Calm down. Breathe. We all had to start somewhere.

Lol, I’ve been doing a lot of the breathing part of that. The calm bit is a little harder to reach sometimes, mainly when I get frustrated with myself for not understanding some things regarding authoring customs, and not knowing really what all I need to actually do this (I mean what I need to do it besides the programs and such that are laid out in the OP here).

*Edit*: Oh and forgot to mention… I don’t blame you at all for avoiding Windows 10. It looks all nice and fancy, with it’s pretty looks and the false advertising that Microsoft puts out there about its “user-friendliness”…. But it’s been a huge pain in my ass ever since I upgraded to it. I like a lot of the features that it has to offer that weren’t on the previous versions of Windows….Maybe it’s just because of the way they released 10 or something, but I still come across quite a lot that isn’t compatible in some way with it. My biggest headache since upgrading to it has been the incompatibility of it with my video/graphics card in my laptop (I have an awesome Asus laptop that has been nothing but perfection for me since I got it a few years ago). For a long time after upgrading to 10, I would get the sad BSOD… and literally, it had a sad face on it when it would pop up on my screen. That screen would show up if I tried even using something as simple as Bluestacks… Would be running a game on there for a couple minutes, the game (and then the whole laptop) would freeze up, then the blue screen would pop up, with it’s huge, sad emoji face on it. Not as many issues now, but occasionally my screen will flicker for a sec when I’m using Bluestacks (not sure why it only does it with Bluestacks now….but meh) as my computer tries to fix whatever issue there is between Windows 10 and my graphics card. It’ll tell me that the drivers for the card crashed or restarted or something. Basically…total nightmare of an OS for at least one reason or another ever since upgrading to it. Buuuut, with that said… I’ve had absolutely no issues on my desktop computer with Windows 10, no issues with compatibility of 10 with anything else on my PC…and the PC is older than my laptop, with an older graphics card and whatnot. Lol. Anyways, enough rambling about that…….

A better idea is to watch pksage’s “Let’s Author” video. It’s a bit outdated, but it still covers the essentials, from tempo mapping to instrument charting to the funnest task of all, vocal authoring. Watch the video, read the tutorial, watch the video again, then set yourself an easy first goal, such as charting only one instrument for a song, or charting a very short song. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about specific problems or roadblocks you’re running into, however, be very afraid to ask questions that make it sound like you want someone to hold your hand. Those kinds of questions don’t get treated lightly around here.

I’ve read through the tutorial quite a few times now, hoping that it’ll make more sense with each time I read it (but it doesn’t, sadly…), or that I’ll have some sort of “A-ha!” moment and it’ll all click for me (again, sadly it hasn’t, lol). I’ve watched that video that pksage made, and the part that I need most is the one part it’s lacking… The process, or whatever it is that I’m supposed to do, what it is I need, etc. to get from where I’m at now to where he’s at in the very beginning of that video. Lol. You mentioned FLAC as one of the audio files that can be used in Reaper. I have a FLAC file I downloaded earlier today for a song… and I put it into Reaper but… then I have no idea what it is I’m looking at, or what it is I’m supposed to be doing with it from there. Haha.

I most definitely do not want my hand held. I really hope that I’m not giving that sort of impression here, because that’s not my intention at all. I very much like to do things on my own, make my own mistakes, have my own successes and ultimately feel very proud of my finished project – especially if that finished project is a custom RB3 song. Lol. I just do really well with having things shown in a more ….organized way, I guess you could say? Not necessarily a step-by-step fashion in this case. But more like someone just saying, “Okay Trouble, you’re going to need this stuff to make a custom song: Reaper, Magma, whatever other programs or plug-ins and such are listed in the OP here. You’ll need to use these things in those programs to make the custom song: a midi file for the song, an audio file (but specifically saying which sort of file I need here, but I tried googling this shit and ……the results I got were so all over the place, I didn’t know what to do or what to use or anything…), and items A, B, C and D (if other stuff is needed).” I think the hard part for me on getting this started is that I haven’t been able to find any videos that show the steps that need to be taken to get from where I am, point A, to like I said before…point B, where pksage is in the beginning of his video you posted the link for. The tutorial was awesome and I know that it would be amazingly helpful if I could manage to get my feet off the ground with this whole authoring of custom songs thing. I don’t know what “charting” actually means when people say that all over the forums here. I listed to midi files on various sites and there’s no words, so where do I get the vocals for the songs? How does the midi file even help me when making a custom song? I have no idea what tempo mapping is either. I don’t….know what anything is. When some of this is explained in the tutorial, it still all just sounds like….gibberish to me. Lol. If there’s something or someone that can explain all of this in literally the most basic way possible (the tutorial is as close as I’ve been able to find with explaining all of this as simple as possible… but there’s still a lot of it where the thing it’s explaining, and the explanation of those things still leave me scratching my head with confusion…)

REAPER supports pretty much any manner of audio file. MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC… any of those will do. However, it is recommended you start with an uncompressed file format like WAV or FLAC, because the audio will get run through an encoder before it is turned into a game file, and compressing an already-compressed file often leads to poor playback in-game.

My biggest question I guess is… Where exactly do I find the files that I need for all this? I found websites that offer free midi files, but how do I know which ones are good quality or not? I can’t afford to buy files for doing this, so I’d need to use a site that offers them for free. Where do I find WAV and FLAC files to use for my custom songs? Are these things that people just….already have somehow, and I’m just out of the loop on that or something? Lol. Is my only option to pay $$ for getting those sorts of files for the songs I’d like to eventually make customs for? If buying such files (WAV, FLAC, or midi files, or whatever other files I could use or need to use, etc) is really the only way to go with getting my hands on them, then I need to put the brakes on this project now, since spending money on this endeavour just isn’t feasible right now.

OOooh, thank you so much for that little piece of information! My Windows 10 is 64, so I just assumed that’s what I needed to use…and downloaded that. But I’ll uninstall and reinstall using 32. I can do that, right? Use the 32 bit even though my Windows 10 says it’s 64 bit? I have absolutely zero knowledge about any of this stuff and am at a complete loss as to where to start… I want to try to start making customs, and I’ve looked through the pdf file tutorial on how to get started and the whole process and whatnot, downloaded all the required programs and stuff…. but I feel so lost with it all. I have no knowledge at all about making music, or about the various audio and/or music files that are out there, I don’t know anything about …anything, with all this. :(

The tutorial mentions having an audio file and a mid file for making customs.. but what sort of audio file is it referring to? an mp3 file, or something else? I feel like I’m never going to get this stuff figured out……. :(

                                EDIT:

Question: Since I have absolutely no clue at all what I’m doing, would it be easier at all for me to try working on songs that people have already done an instrument or two for? Since I play bass (but will make a horrible attempt at guitar if a song doesn’t have bass in it and it’s a song I absolutely love and really want to rock out to, lol), I’d like to try working on Bass (and guitar probably)… so would I be better off adding the bass to customs that have already been posted but are lacking bass? There are a lot of songs I’ve found in the database that have either just the guitar, or just the drums, but no other instruments (even though there clearly are other instruments in the song), so I guess those are the songs I’m referring to as far as adding to them.

I’m really at a loss as to where to start…. but I’m determined to try and give this a shot, if possible. I love RB and love this community as a whole and would love to contribute to it as opposed to just enjoying the work of others without bringing anything to the table. Lol.

Thank you for adding them to the database! I downloaded pretty much all of the ones I’d wanted from here, but it’s nice to have them in the database so that if anyone wants to work on them or anything, maybe they’ll be able to find them easier (and that way people aren’t doing any of these songs on their own without realizing that you’ve already done them and they just aren’t in the database yet, lol).

I played through most of the ones I’d downloaded – Barbie Girl, Sexy and I Know It, Y.M.C.A, and one or two others, and they seemed good to me, but I honestly am not instrumentally inclined in any way, so unless something was waaaaay off in some obvious sort of way, I probably wouldn’t really notice anyways… Haha. Plus, bass often gets…. drowned out, or less heard throughout most songs anyways, so it’s hard to tell sometimes exactly where the bass is at when trying to find it by ear alone. I enjoyed them though and I loved playing them… even though my bf found my enjoyment of playing Sexy and I Know It quite comical… Lol.

Even though you don’t author anymore TrojanNemo… I have to say, thank you very, very, very much for all of the work you have done with authoring songs and getting them out there for us avid fans of RB to enjoy. I honestly was not at all aware at how enormous of a fan base there was for RB, or that customs existed, or that anyone would love RB so much that they would devote the time and energy into making sososososo many custom songs that are now in the database on this site. Lol. I certainly didn’t think that I was completely alone in my love and obsession with RB….. but I didn’t think that the crowd of people who loved and obsessed over it like I do would’ve been so large. I’m glad it is though. So again, thank you for all of the awesomeness you’ve done (and still do, even if that awesomeness isn’t authoring songs anymore). I really like that C3 encourages supporting Harmonix, with buying DLC and not trying to “steal” in any way by having customs for songs that are already in existence that can be bought as DLC and such. The idea that, “Customs wouldn’t exist without Harmonix, so by supporting Harmonix, you’re supporting C3 and custom songs in general,” is amazing, really. RB4 hasn’t exactly been what a lot of people wanted it to be, and to some it still isn’t where they want it to be even now… but, if the support for Harmonix isn’t there, then it’ll never be where we want it. Sooo, thank you, and thank you C3, for being super awesome and amazing and being in existence. Hahah. :D
