About Toto

Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means “all all-encompassing,” the group was intent on exploring every style of music.

In 1981, Toto’s third album Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour established them as a brand across the globe.

After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during their recent tour. Toto’s touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to break up for a period of time. The group returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return to their best form, and the tour that went with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
