So if I am going to give drums a go, I am gonna do it right and go pro drums.

Knowing what you know now, what would be a good starter pro drum kit to pick up??

I really don’t want to use the RB drum kit – too much like a toy

What did you think of my Alesis kit? I think it was $500 at the time I bought it.

you could probably find a used Yamaha dtxplorer kit for cheap. baffles the mind why anyone bought the ion drum set when you could get one of these cheap….

has all the midi notes for proper colours etc. this kit just isn’t programmable.

I honestly didnt pay that much attention since at the time I had no intentions of ever drumming.

Hmm, it appears not unless I am looking wrong, that the Alesis kits are cheaper than the Yamaha kits

But I am not too concerned with price, as long as it is a fair value and worth it

If you’re going to use it beyond just the RB game, the most suggested eDrums model for beginners is the Alesis Nitro. Last year the model was updated with mesh pads without increasing the price, so make sure you check if you buy it second hand.

If you live in Europe, Thomann sells Millennium eDrums models which are comparable in price and quality to the Alesis, but each one has its own benefit to consider.

No I am US, and this will simply be for RB3. Too old with too much going on to become the new Jon Bonham

Why would you need to become the new John Bonham when you can be the one and only Rubydanger? <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

The Alesis Nitro is probably your best choice then. It’s less than 400$ new, if the price doesn’t bother you, but you can easily find it second hand, although probably not yet the mesh version because it’s too new.

Whatever model, before buying make sure it has 5pin midi output and that it either uses standard midi drums events OR it allows you to change them (even better since you’ll be able to also play open hihats with the pedal), otherwise you’ll have to pass the eDrums to a laptop before the MPA.

If you’re too undecided, like I was, you can anyway pick up first a very cheap throwaway option and see how it feels. I was torn between the Nitro and a very similar Millennium for weeks, then I saw a much older model sold second hand for 30e and I just thought… well in the worst case I am wasting 30 euros for testing how it feels. Then it actually turned out it’s good enough for the game and I still haven’t switched to a better set.

The Nitro kit looks good – I went ahead and ordered one and a midi adapter. Hopefully rocking out with it this weekend.

    Thanks for the recommendations!!

Excellent choice! Alesis makes good stuff for a great price. And those mesh heads make a big difference to me.

It’s been a little while since I looked into this, can you link what you ordered and how one sets it up to Rock Band?

Well this is the Alesis Nitro kit mesh version: https://www.alesis.com/products/view2/nitro-mesh-kit

About setting up, I think it’s as easy as connecting the Nitro midi out to the RB MPA adapter midi in with a simple 5pin midi cable.

I am hoping it’s that easy – here is the adapter I bought

I actually just set up my Nitro yesterday – thankfully it really is that easy! Only thing that needed adjusting was the crash and ride placement specifically for Rock Band playability reasons but that was as simple as switching the cables for both. Granted, it’s a pretty tight fit getting the crash cable to the ride, as the cable lengths are specifically tailored for a standard acoustic setup, so you could also save a new kit to the module that changes the midi values for the crash and ride instead.
