Hi there! So I’m trying my hand at Vocal Authoring. I’m starting with just adding Vocals to a couple of thespike’s songs. I had a couple of questions.

1, for harsh vocals, is there a specific key that is good to author in? Or is it really whatever is easiest for me to hear?

2, for harsh vocals, would slowing down the track be fine to place the tubes?

3, How do you do that scrubbing thing that distorts the audio file to hear pitches? I remember seeing it in Nyxyxylyth’s video I believe.

Any other tips and stuff would be cool too.

    Thanks!

    1. If they are talkied then you can author them in whatever key and pitch you want, if they have a distinct enough pitch to be non-talkied, chart them as you would any other vocal note

    2. I have sometimes had Reaper become visually out of sync with the audio when slowing it down, but as long as it doesn’t do that, then sure. Though charting it on a 64th grid on normal speed should probably be manageable in most cases.

Not sure how the scrubbing thing works, I usually just pause and unpause quickly to find out where pitches start and end along with using ReaSynth.

Also for talkies, be sure to use “^” marks instead of “#” ones for very short notes or lyrics with a lot of breathing sounds in them (words with a lot of S, H, etc.) if you are unable to not chart the breathing sounds due to the way the word is pronounced etc.

The thing that makes scrubbing tricky to enable is that a critical step was left out in the video. In the Reaper preferences, go to Editing Behavior>Mouse Modifiers. Change the setting in “Context” to “Edit cursor handle” and make the default action “Scrub audio (looped-segment mode)”.

As shown in the video, there are also some things you may need to set up under Audio>Playback. I’m not sure specifically what needs to be set there, because the video just says to make the settings match what’s shown.

I have tried about every possible combination of settings in 3.78 to enable scrub but i am not having any luck recreating what Nyxyxylyth’s video has. Anyone have any tips?

My tip is to PM Nyx.

So witty – I would but he uses 4.33 in the video, and probably doesn’t remember exact settings for 3.78. Was hoping someone could share the settings that still use this version.

    More questions!

What about when you’re trying to chart the word five

But there are 3 descending notes in the word 5.

Would you put fi-i-ive in your text file?

Would you chart 2 1/64ths for one note, 2 1/64th spaces, 2 more 1/64ths for the next note, 2 more 1/64th spaces, and 2 more 1/64ths for the last note?

Actually, I still primarily use 3.78, because the MIDI zoom in 4.x sucks. I only switch to 4.x to run CARV and the neato C3 Automation Tools.

Here’s what my REAPER prefs screen looks like:

As far as your 5: it’s either “five + +”, or “fi= i= ive”, depending on whether the singer is just sliding, or using glottal stops, respectively. For a glottal stop example, consider Blur’s Song 2: “It wasn’t easy but nothing i= is”.

For timing, syllables should almost never be less than 2/64, and the gap between should always be at least 2/64. There are rare exceptions for exceptional singers: see the chart for Aretha Franklin’s “Think”, etc.

      Thank you, that worked.

In the example above, would fi-i-ive be one solid line that curves downward, or would it be 3 separate lines?

        “five + +” is a continuous line.

“fi= i= ive” is three separate lines. Note the use of “=” rather than “-“, which forces hyphens to be displayed.

would you still include spaces between the gems that you chart for the variation in pitch for the one word, if using the + sign?

          Definitely.

To elaborate, the blank space is the actual slide on the chart.

So if you’ve got a 1/16th G, then a 1/32nd blank, and a 1/16th A, for example, that 32nd blank is the slide in game.
