Alright all you Rush fans, I’ve got a question for you.

Vapor Trails or Vapor Trails Remixed?

So Rush released a remixed version of Vapor Trails because of the various audio problems present in the original album. From a quality perspective it’s a better version. Personally I like the original version. There’s a lot of audio clipping for sure (see “Ceiling Unlimited”) but I actually like the heavy sound that the original album had. The remixed version is definitely the more traditional Rush sound and from an authoring perspective it’s better because you can hear the instruments a lot more clearly but some of the impact is lost (especially on songs like “One Little Victory”.

    So what do you think?

i didn’t really mind the original mixes, and there are a couple things in Remixed that still throw me; bits where they seem to have swapped in a different take during the remixing process. you’re definitely right about One Little Victory losing its oomph, too. but generally i prefer the remixed versions for the clarity, especially with the bass parts. Vapor Trails has some of Geddy’s most chord-heavy bass work, and the new mixes make it sound absolutely gorgeous.

    Original !!

Remixes may sound better, the recording equipment may be better ?

At the time of recording in the Studio / Original version is what the song first started and was recorded as.

A Remix doesn’t make a song better most of the time. It just mix’s it up ! Or in some case’s mess’s it up ! lol

The way the 3 members of Rush made it sound First is the way I would go……

Banshee did you find yourself a working bass drum pedal for your RB3 drums yet ?

I authored the album using the remixed version because it’s less of a mess. I like it better for listening purposes too except for a few spots here and there.

Yeah, the remixed version is better for hearing all that Geddy plays. Sometimes it’s great to hear the actual notes (like the bass solo in “Ceiling Unlimited” but as far as hearing that cool distortion, the bass solo sounds a lot more powerful and intense in the original. So there’s good parts of both. Vapor Trails is my favorite album due in no small part to Geddy’s kick-ass bass lines.

Yeah that’s why I sometimes have a problem with remastered albums. The quality it clearer and it overall sounds better but you don’t get all the imperfections that the original recording. Imagine if they remastered Elvis or The Andrews Sisters. It just wouldn’t be the same. I think there was a remastered version of “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” a while ago that sounded nice but missed that personal feel that the original had. Same with “Space Oddity.”

Yes, I’m using my friend’s bass pedal and it’s working fine. Thank you again, it’s so nice to be able to actually play drums.

Yeah it sounds a lot easier to chart because the notes don’t all slur together. I imagine other than a few changes (once again using “Ceiling Unlimited” as an example, there’s a guitar solo after the bass one not present or extremely quiet in the original) you could upload both versions with essentially the same chart. So using the remixed version to chart and then transposing to the original and uploading both wouldn’t be too hard.

I found drum kicks to be the things I had to go over with a fine comb (I had originally authored the album before the remix version was released), because the original mix was drowning them mercilessly.

There is an “unmastered” version of the album floating around, It has the same mix as the original version, but without all of the mastering issues of the original version. It sounds the best IMO.

My favorite Rush album! I get the feeling that the guys were super excited to be back in the studio during this one. Compare that to the lackluster feeling Snakes and Arrows has.

I prefer the original over the remaster because the original had freshness and intensity that feels taken out of the remaster. The remaster sounds closer to Snakes and Arrows which I was disappointed with (relatively speaking.) But I listen to both the original and remaster because I hear different things in each of them. Geddy’s Bass is definitely clearer in the remaster and until that came out I never fully appreciated how well he plays it on this album.

There was a thread posted to /r/rush about a month ago. I did a comparison between the two versions and you can see the difference

Sadly the link to the dropbox folder doesn’t exist, so we’ll have to hunt elsewhere.

    The search continues…

I do have a copy of it, but idk if file sharing non-customs related stuff is ok or not.
