so i’m a big fan of a little band called They Might Be Giants. You Might Have Heard of them. maybe you’re a fan, like me, in which case you were overjoyed to see C3’s TMBG pack hit the front page back in April. but then again, if you’re like me, three songs just wasn’t enough, and you can’t seem to find any more.

    so i have a (presumptuous) proposal. if i can get a show of enough hands, i want to author a handful of songs from every TMBG album – at least two from each, with all instruments and all difficulties. i’m open to suggestions on albums i haven’t picked from yet, and i’d also very much appreciate help charting (particularly with vocals, though drums are also nice) if anyone would want to. i plan to release some TMBG with or without the support for this idea, but i’m interested to see if enough people would like to have something like this for it to be worth my while.

    here’s a sample of what i’ve planned out so far – most of these packs i plan to author no matter what; the first of these is currently in progress.

    from They Might Be Giants (1986):

    • Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head
    • Don’t Let’s Start
    • (She Was A) Hotel Detective
    • She’s An Angel

    from Lincoln (1988):

    • Purple Toupee
    • They’ll Need A Crane
    • [???]

    (originally) from Flood (1990):

    • Istanbul (Not Constantinople) [a live version, possibly featuring intro guitar solo]
    • Your Racist Friend
    • Particle Man [again, live]
    • Someone Keeps Moving My Chair

    (originally) from Apollo 18 (1992):

    • I Palindrome I
    • The Statue Got Me High
    • The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)
    • See The Constellation
    • Fingertips [live]

    yes, this is an awful lot of songs to author for one little band with just two minor radio hits. but there’s enough of a cult following out there that i think it might be worth the effort to do at least some of these. what do you all think? please let me know!

      I’m not an author but you can bet i’ll be grabbing every single song you put out!

        I don’t want to be ‘one of THOSE authors’ and overcommit myself (since I’m so slow to finish things: combination of perfectionism and depression), but “John Henry” is on my desert island album list. If you do songs from that, I’d be pretty easy to sucker in to help.

        Also, a few folks who have expressed interest in and/or already contributed to authoring TMBG previously: pksage, espher, Hop, MiltoniusPrime

          I guess it depends on which instruments you want to focus on, or just pick the more popular ones…

          So far as ‘rock-suitable’ stuff, probably add in two of these (for an album-sorted 3-pack) :

          * AKA Driver

          * I Should Be Allowed to Think (despite the fade, I could edit a new ending)

          * Destination Moon

          By contrast, a few of my faves:

          * Spy (but keep the ending “music game” or not?)

          * Meet James Ensor

          * Thermostat (which I’d actually recorded a cover of, more than a decade ago!)

          i’ll give the album some listens and think these over.

          How’s the progress coming along?

          Unpronouncable and All The Lazy Boyfriends from Their latest album would have some really fun keyboard parts. I would also second anything from John Henry!

          haven’t been working on this stuff for a while now. i can say that i’d really like to have a Pink Album pack out on the 30th anniversary of the album’s release, but that’s all the way out in November, so it’s entirely likely i’ll release some TMBG before then.
