Song is complete and now posted in my thread in the “Other Customs” discussion board found here:
September 9, 2013 at 1:31 am #405873Anyway, I’m posting this hoping to get some feedback to help me get better. I’ve heard a lot of authors say that they threw away their first chart because it sucked so much and I’m sure I’m well on my way towards that.Overall: a decent first go. You’ll need a pass to scrub out consonants – quite a few tubes start *way* too early, including sounds like “S” and “T”. Similarly, some tubes end way too late.
I spotted one stray in the tempo map: M21 should be at 49.776 (80 ms late)
You’ve got every word capitalized: “Tell Us The Secret Rhyme”, etc. It’s okay if you want to capitalize stuff like “Son of the Staves of Time”, since it’s the title, and maybe other epic locations like “Heaven’s Gate”, but not everything.
Key:
-3/64 = start 3/64 earlier
+3/64 = start 3/64 later
3/64- = end 3/64 earlier
3/64+ = end 3/64 later
Here’s up to the first bridge:
4.4.75 Ti-(F#) -3/64, 1/64-
5.4.18 des- 1/64- (if the gap is more than a semitone, it’s generally 3/64 minimum)
5.4.62 + 1/64- (don’t include the S sound in the tube)
6.3.31 son 2/64-
6.4.75 Son +4/64 (don’t include S) – this and next 3 tubes 1/64-
8.2.31 Time 2/64-, + (-2/64)
8.4.87 Ti- -3/64, 1/64-
9.4.25 des- 2/64-
9.4.68 + +1/64, 2/64-
10.3.43 son 2/64-
10.4.87 Tell +4/64
11.2.13 us
11.4.85 rhyme(D)
20 Byr- 3/64-
21.2.25 In- 3/64-
21.4 gate(A) 3/64, +(Bb)
22.4.43 last +(F) is all you need – extend to 22.4.43
26.3 stave +4/64
26.4 runes 3/64-
27 All(A) the(A) sec-(A) ret(G#) signs(G#)
29.1.87 probably Tid- her
30.2.56 Sign© +8/64, +(D) +(Bb – start current Bb 3/64 later)
32.2 probably Id- her (also 46.2)
34 just use Ow#
35.2 most 5/64-
36.3.31 hold A to 36.3.31, then start F at 36.4.12, end at 37.1.18, then ah(D)
40.3 follower – redo timing here
41 Un-(A) til( heav-(A) en’s(G#) gate(G#) 4/64-
44.2 sign(Eb) +(F) +(Bb)
45.4.31 tor 6/64- (chop off notes like this when it trails off to nothing in particular)
46.4 er© +(Eb)
47.3 How(Bb) +©, don’t fall to G# until 47.4.75
48.4 son(G)
49.3 cient(F) Time(F) +(F#) +(A) +(G#) +(F)
51.3 ces(F)
52.3 of© your(A) line(Bb) +© +(D)
There are some tricky bits in there, particularly 52.3, but let’s see how your first attempt at straightening it out goes.
September 9, 2013 at 2:10 am #405877Holy cow that’s quite alot of mistakes there, and that’s onlly half the song! I knew I was going to have shorten/lengthen quite a bit of the notes, but didn’t know my pitches were that off. I thought I could actually hear pitches well. Oh well. Do you have a better method for figuring out the pitch other than by ear? Also, was that the only error in the tempo map or did you just happen to notice that one? I ask becuase that was the part I was most worried that I screwed up.
Thank you for going through the chart so carefully. It’s just what I need to keep me going on the road to improvement. Were my musical tastes not so unpopular I’d like to release through C3 sometime in the future.

Also, was that the only error in the tempo map or did you just happen to notice that one? I ask becuase that was the part I was most worried that I screwed up.I got up to 2:50 or so in the tempo map, and that was the only off one I spotted. Good start!

Popularity is definitely not a prerequisite for C3 releases. GO FOR IT!

September 9, 2013 at 2:49 pm #405908I plan on making two customs on drums following the gothic style.
1 – Lacrimosa – Alleine zu zweit
2 – Within Temptation – Ice Queen
You would do the vocals of these two songs?

As Nyx says, I still have to get better at vocals yet, plus learn how to chart the actual instruments as well (dreading the drums — will not be good).
Even with that, I have alot of stuff on my own list I’d like to do and Within Temptation / Lacrimosa don’t interest me at all. Therion & Nightwish are about the only two bands in that style that I enjoy.
Now if there’s someone out there with an unfinished custom of a 70’s, 80’s rock/metal song or power metal song from any era I might consider finishing it with vocals if I knew the song… And if I get better at vox charting.
September 9, 2013 at 9:03 pm #405940Key:
-3/64 = start 3/64 earlier
+3/64 = start 3/64 later
3/64- = end 3/64 earlier
3/64+ = end 3/64 later
Just sat down to revisit the chart and got confused by the key. Shouldn’t the -3/64 be start 3/64 later?

If you get bored and want to see if your notes got through to me and my thick head, here’s the updated files:

Maybe you might be able to suffer through the whole song this time (maybe even harmony parts?)? I know it’s hard to listen to it.

Gimme a couple days – backed up with the start of a new robotics year GO TEAM 469 LAS GUERRILLAS!

No… Not pompous. I like to think of it as grandiose. Bombastic might even be acceptable.
Good luck to Las Guerrillas and I look forward to hearing your input later this week.
Thanks
