I’m hoping there is something silly that I am missing here. I am working on my first song and chose something… less simple than I should have to start with, but I didn’t think it would be this much trouble to get synced in-game.

The sheet music I am working from says that the song is in 3/2 @ 200 bpm with a single measure of 3/4. I have transcribed it in 3/4 with that single measure at 3/8, at around 100-105 bpm for the whole song. Most of my focus has been on getting the drums right. As far as I can tell in REAPER, the tempo map is spot on.

So the things I already suspect could be wrong:

      1. The tempo map is actually a total mess in a way that I can’t tell. Hence I would love an outside opinion on this.

      2. The BEAT track and/or half-measure. I’ve tried removing the 3/8 measure and just living with the second half of the song not lining up on the measure lines, and it didn’t seem to help (the linked version is in this state, see measure 78). In any case it’s more than just the second half that’s totally out of whack in-game.

      3. Would it help if I doubled the BPM and made everything 3/2 as written? I’d have tried this already but not sure how to do it without editing every single tempo marker.

      4. One or another setting I’m compiling with? Normally I will compile after running through the midi cleaner and venue generator, but I’ve tried without. When I render audio, “Embed project tempo” is checked. Export midi has “Embed tempo map” checked.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Nope, it’s all in 4/4 in your project. Make sure you check the Set time signature box when you change the TS. Whenever a time signature change occurs you will see a line going from the tempo map track down to the bottom of the project.

It starts out fine but since the song is a victim of the loudness wars you probably couldn’t snap the tempo map correctly. Anyway, by the end of the song the audio is off, you can check this out by just positioning your cursor on a snare and play: you can hear a pretty big delay. Solution? Zoom in harder to find the peaks and make sure the tempo map is tighter than it is now.

It looks like it is in 3/4 to me… When I explicitly set markers to 3/4, nothing changes. The 3/8 measure marker was removed because it seemed to be throwing things off somehow.

Checking again this morning, it does look like my adjustments when working with the guitar chart threw it off by an 8th early towards the end (I think 126 is where that starts), but in-game it gets off early, then back on for a section, and gets way off later on.

I have the version before I started messing with the guitar and was pretty sure it lined up well with the drums for the entire song, but I’ll have to get home from work to look again. My method marking the measures out was zooming in very tightly to find the downbeats. When I went back over it I looped measure by measure and adjusted the BPM until it sounded right. I did that again when lining up the guitar and I think that was a mistake; the instruments are not perfectly aligned.

Thank you for taking a look.

Weird, I don’t know what I saw this morning, sorry. Anyway, I don’t see any time signature change during the song, at what measure did you put the 3/8 marker? I’m not sure what you mean by the guitar lining up with the drums, the tempo map works regardless of which instrument you focus on.

Measure 78 should be marked 3/8 but is not in the current project. The BEAT track only has three beats per measure and didn’t seem to make sense with the half measure so I removed it.

For the guitar, I found that after I aligned the tempo to the drums a lot of the guitar seemed late. But I probably will revert to before I tried to fix that.

Well, I guess it’s none of the weird things. I restored the better synced previous version, did another tempo pass and now it syncs up decently and works with the 3/8 measure. The tempo map still needs work, so I guess fifth time will have to be the charm.

You’re right about the dynamic compression, that makes picking out the drum hits in the waveform impossible in places. I zoomed to 1 measure across the widescreen and resorted to scrubbing every note and it turned out better. Now that I got it close I understand the timing window.

                Thanks for taking a look! <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
