Hey guys. My name is Scienyde. I approached pksage recently about potentially releasing some of my customs through C3. I wanted to introduce myself and give a quick rundown of some things that I’m working on or are looking forward to doing in the near future.

First, a little bit of background. I’ve been playing rhythm games since the late 90s Bemani explosion (ie DDR, Beatmania, Guitar Freaks). I literally purchased an Xbox 360 specifically for Rock Band when it came out, purchased almost every piece of official DLC, and when RBN was announced, threw my hat in the ring to help release songs from bands I love. (Unfortunately that didn’t always seem to work out as well as I had hoped due to getting a crash course in music licensing rights, lol.)

I’ll admit, my rate of work isn’t going to be as high as some of the more prolific authors around here. I much prefer to work on songs that I can have access to multitracks, though it’s not a deal-breaker if I love the song enough. I’ll also admit that venue work is probably my lowest priority. I hate the RB3 method of venue creation and nine times out of ten will prefer to just auto-generate whenever possible. Of course if that means that anyone would prefer to help out in that regard, I won’t say no

My primary preferences, musically, run towards prog rock, hard rock, alternative, pop, and electronic styles from the 70s through 90s.

Here’s a quick list of some of the stuff I’m currently working on or have slotted to begin working on in short order. No CONs to upload just yet, I’d prefer to start putting them up as I complete all difficulties.

Oh, not a problem. If you’re already working on the full album I don’t want to step on any toes, and if you don’t have the multitracks I’d be more than happy to share!

When I said it had a history, I wasn’t kidding. Multitracks are not an issue, “stems” have already been pre-produced, additional instruments have already been separated from the backing track (saxophone in Another Day, in example), tabs for reference have been organized, etc. More than a year ago I had envisioned I&W as the first customs album ever with multitrack audio so I put together all the resources. Then things went south because of someone who decided that working with someone else’s material is far easier and released a not finalized version of one song. I put the brakes on the whole thing because of that but it’s gonna soon be time to start working on the album ignoring that one song and authoring it from scratch, just to be safe.

Anyway, maybe you would be interested in doing the album with me?

By the way, it’s always a delight to see people involved with RBN joining in.

I’ll gladly help out where I can. I was only focusing on “Take the Time” as that’s my favorite song of theirs, but I can offer my services as limited as they may be to help wherever possible!

I’m sure your sevices are not limited. Thanks then, I’ll contact you once I’ve made sense of where to start from.

            Question for those interested.

So, you may have noticed in the first post I marked some projects as [PA] – partial stems acquired. These are typically tracks where I’ve ripped the audio from DTS 5.1 mixes on DVD-A releases. They’re not perfect, but usually I get more separation than I would elsewhere.

For example, Pink Floyd’s “Money” has most of the guitar separated out to one channel, and most of the keyboard separated out to another. Bass, drums, and vocals are all mixed in the remaining channels, plus there’s random spots where the backing guitar comes in. Or, on King Crimson’s “One More Red Nightmare”, I get nearly perfect separation for the lead vocals, but the other channels are a mishmash of guitar and sax on one, and bass and drums on the other.

What I’m wondering is, would it be acceptable to do a quasi-multitrack release of these, where the guitar chart has everything charted (both the stuff that’s soloed and mixed into the backings), but only has audio for the separated parts? Same for the keys? Would this be too distracting to have parts of the song be muted when you miss but other parts not? Should I just downmix everything to backing? Would love to hear opinions on this.

For Pink Floyd, we ruled out multitrack because it was a bit all over the place, as you point out, so we went with the final mix anyway.

As an internal rule we always only had 3 scenarios:

              1) Final mix

              2) Karaoke version (meaning vocals only are separated)

              3) Multitrack

Actually, we tend never to have mixed stuff (Nemo has gone crazy for one of his unreleased projects because vocals were bleading a bit…), however this is mainly up to the author. Issue is, we don’t have mixed labels: a song is either a multitrack or it’s not. Nothing obviously stops you from presenting it as a partial multitrack (I’ll do that for one of my songs in the future), but users won’t be able to specifically find it in our database using our flags. Plus, when you play, what cuts out is important: if guitar and piano play together for all the song, you can’t cut guitar when the piano player misses, and viceversa, obviously, but if you have a clean guitar track that can cut out independently, that’s nice.

Same issue happened with PF’s “Time”, more or less. In that one the keys and backup singers were combined, the guitar track swapped a couple times, and it just got too messy too fast.

I thought it was a little too weird to have only one instrument be able to do the muted thing, so I just went with the usual.

Currently in the process of tempo mapping out King Crimson’s “Red”, and without clear separates, the drums might be a little bit out of my paygrade… anyone around here specializing in pro drums charting want to hop on this one? I can provide stems and a tempo map.

I’ve tried to amend my foolish ways of over-committing to all the awesome projects that I want to participate in without the time to actually do them, but if it comes down to “Red” languishing without Pro Drum assistance, please drop me a PM about it in the future.

Erm, the song “Red”, I mean: full “Red” album would assuredly be more than I could handle!

(Just make sure you get your time signatures right while you’re tempo-mapping! Though I suppose starting on this undertaking at all probably means you’re already hip to that stuff. )

Just added a quickie beta v01 of Robert Miles’ “Children” to playtesting. I didn’t even know I was working on this until last night. Uh, surprise!
