I’m not going to speak for the whole C3 team here, since obviously we’ve got different folks involved than we did at launch and in the lead-up to launch, but I want to put a few things on the table regarding where C3 was and its “raisons d’être”.
Prior to C3 actually being C3, it was originally just supposed to be one bombastic final send-off for the game we love as a week of DLC following the end of regular DLC. Of course, some time after that pitch and before DLC ended, it turned into what we have here — a source of new content for players and a resource for folks looking to create their own content. The weekly release concept was a bit of a different animal — though everyone involved out of the gate was an active customs author prior to the end of DLC, there was nothing similar to the C3 “weekly releases” thing going on, and it was spun up to replace the void that was “the end of DLC content” (customs were already a thing on ScoreHero’s software board and in a few other places on the web) and to hopefully keep the community active and alive, because we all loved the game.
The only reason I bring this up is so that people don’t start trying to brandish pitchforks. Whatever happens with the various “components” of C3 is still all TBD, since (as others here have mentioned) there is still plenty of time for us to discuss it, but people need to at least be cognisant of the fact that things could (and probably will) change in some capacity. There is a certain degree of appreciation (I was going to say reverence, but that would be wrong) amongst us for HMX, since they made the game and made most of the tools we needed to use to get custom content running (yes, yes, Nemo fixed them), and we’re obviously not looking to do anything that harms the future of the franchise.
A few things of note, though, for those of you that intend to stay w/ RB3 and customs, that I’m pretty sure I can speak for the team on:
- Generally speaking, we will not be permitting the posting of and will not be hosting any content that HMX has released for Rock Band. This includes ‘RB3 versions’ of RB4 songs. This is not a change, but something I want to clarify/stress since it’s been mentioned a few times in this thread (and I give those of you that have a disapproving head shake).
- I can appreciate the sentiment about how customs have given you ‘enough content’ or whatever so that you don’t need to look towards a new game and new content, and the support for C3 as an community, but you’re going to get that same disapproving head shake. It was never our intent or goal to do deter people from continuing to support the franchise (granted, speaking personally, I wasn’t optimistic we’d get an RB4 full stop, never mind one with DLC compatibility). I get it for those of you that are doing it for certain reasons (no keys/pro in the successor, or no intent to go next gen full stop), as I’ve done it for other games (nerfed xloc/shock rifle in UT99), but if it’s the library… tsk tsk. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
- I don’t expect we will see customs in RB4 for at least two or three years, if at all, so don’t get too hyped for that. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
[…] and I’m sure espher will be adding keys/prokeys via RBHP as he’s already done for some of the 2015 DLC.Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, here. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
I’d wager DLC will not be backwards compatible. Even though RB3 could parse RB1/RB2 songs, RB3 songs were in a different format, and I don’t think there’s a huge incentive for them to release ‘legacy content’ (with whatever fees are associated) when the new game comes out, especially when they want to push people to jump gens and be in it for the long haul. They’re also not just letting you load the old DLC — it sounds like they’re rebuilding them for the new format, and then just giving you a free download if you had it before — so the post-RB4 stuff may just be in whatever the new format is. It may not be a drastic change, but I’d wager it’s enough that they aren’t gonna sell it for RB3.
If it happens, great, but I’d take the bet against it.
according to vgchartz.comMight as well just pull numbers out of your behind if that’s the source. vgcharts is hot garbage.
But I don’t doubt it sold poorly – I heard another source citing
March 5, 2015 at 8:24 pm #439887I don’t really view the absence of keys as anything but a creative step backwards. A necessary evil, perhaps, but it might turn out to be especially glaring. The modern landscape of pop music is so much different than it was even two or three years ago. Even our biggest, rockiest, bands like Imagine Dragons are leaning hard on keyboards, so they’ll either have to be really selective with their modern lineup or…just not really care at all. I am going to miss it, but that just means I’m going to milk these last eight or so months I have left with my keyboard.
Pro guitar, I won’t miss. I hated it. Or rather I hated the Mustang. I’ve tried to reconcile with it over the past three years, but I just can’t. It’s a piece of crap, but it would have been the only cost effective proprietary option for Pro. A Rocksmith-style “use any guitar” system is unlikely because the framework between the two games is miles apart, but that’s okay. I’m happy with Rocksmith for my real guitar needs.
At this point, I’m excited for Rock Band 4, only really biting my teeth at hardware compatibility, but I’ll start fresh with my set if I have to. I fucking love this game.
March 5, 2015 at 8:28 pm #439888I have spent about 4 hours today on the HMX forums and reading articles so I had seen HMXHenry’s FAQ.That addresses old to new, not whether RB4 will work in RB3.
You are correct. I was mixing in my own speculation, based on reading between the lines and the current economic realities for Harmonix. Of course RB4 to RB3 will be doable, either by Harmonix or by any number of crafty bit-whackers here and elsewhere, but I’m still not holding my breath that it will be an official thing.
March 5, 2015 at 8:31 pm #439889When espher writes those long posts, with the way he has with words and knowing that he’s Canadian (so everything is said in good spirits), I swear I could swoon if I wasn’t so hetero. #nohomo.
Also, I wouldn’t say I fixed HMX’s tools, because they weren’t broken. More like, expanded and improved. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />
March 5, 2015 at 8:50 pm #439891All I need are Pro Drums and Harmonies. Looks like we’ll get those by early indications.
My biggest disappointment:
“We don’t have any plans to start RBN back up on any console at the moment. Sorry.”RBN was such a problematic experiment, technologically speaking, but what a glorious experiment it was! I want to be part of something like that again. Hope the old content remains available, at least, but I hope they consider auto-upgrading those pre-RBN 1.5 Pro Drums charts.
March 5, 2015 at 8:54 pm #439894They already said that after the DLC is ported over they plan to port over the RBN songs. That means what’s already out though, no more RBN as a program. As I said before, that was based on the XNA framework and I don’t think that’s available on Xbox One. It was fun while it lasted.
Well, this is a travesty:
March 5, 2015 at 9:03 pm #439897Meaning, my prediction is the same file format will stay, and RB4 DLC will be backwards compatible with RB3I really hope this turns out to be the case. At least then we could still upgrade the charts ourselves.
Is nobody else excited for this?I’ve been wanting to get some new peripherals for RB3 use, so I hope these new controllers can be used on last gen consoles.
No pro (except drums, which barely counts anyway) is a big turn off for me. I do have an Ion kit and my friends like playing 5 button mode stuff so I’ll probably get this game eventually, but only when I happen to get an Xbone (ie. for Kingdom Hearts 3). Rock Band 4 IS the deciding factor of which current gen console I am going to buy and I knew this back when RB4 was a rumor.
March 5, 2015 at 9:04 pm #439898but people need to at least be cognisantYou’re so hot when you talk French.
March 5, 2015 at 9:17 pm #439902Two things:
One, I’d rather get a PS4 but all my current Rock Band stuff is on 360. So we’ll see how I make out with that.
Two, I’m worried that one of the songs I have reserved in show floor that’s already done being authored will be on the setlist. Again, we’ll see.
I also hope they don’t start putting clickers in their strum bars like most third party sellers have. I know I’m a minority, but I can’t stand a noisy strum bar.
March 5, 2015 at 9:18 pm #439903That’s the last straw. I’m out.

I’m totally with you on everything you said. I have a PS4 but all my songs are on 360. I will have to really think a lot whether I buy an Xbox just for this, or if I just go with the PS4 version and just buy specific songs again that I really liked.
Or I just wait until the Xbox One Slim gets announced. Hopefully this E3! Because that would make my decision a bit easier.
And yeah, I hate the clicky strum bar. It needs to be quiet. But judging by the pics they released of the new red guitars, it looks like those are pretty much the same guitars that we are used to.
March 5, 2015 at 9:39 pm #439906Meaning, my prediction is the same file format will stay, and RB4 DLC will be backwards compatible with RB3I’m doubting that. The game is only being made for XB1 and PS4, so they won’t release the new stuff on the old stuff. I just don’t see that working at all because for all we know the coding and software on XB1 and PS4 could be completely different from the old consoles.
Anyway, I already have both XB1 and PS4 so I’ll get it for XB1. Sure, there’s no keys or pro guitar which in some cases, it sucks. But I DO want to and will support (and you guys should too!) one of my favourite video game developers because I want them to do well and stick around for as long as possible. Remember, there would never have been a C3 without Harmonix.
March 5, 2015 at 9:44 pm #439907Well, all my other predictions have been right. It’s only human that one or two will eventually be wrong ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
If there is no RB3 DLC post RB4 release, oh well. I’ll be on RB4 anyways.
Although…. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />
March 5, 2015 at 9:59 pm #439910Also, if you are a fan of Frank Turner from the free song that was released today, there’s this:
https://twitter.com/frankturner/status/ … 7512722432
Do you think he’s hinting at being on the RB4 setlist, or just that he will be in RB4 because this song will carry on? Hmmm…
March 5, 2015 at 10:03 pm #439911The video preview for the song did mention at the end that it was compatible with RB4.
