Required Canadian Content

 

CRTC regulations mandate that 40% of content must be CanCon, which means that it satisfies two of four MAPL requirements:

 

* M – Music, composed entirely by a Canadian

* A – Artist, music or lyrics are performed principally by a Canadian

* P – Performance, a performance that is recorded in Canada or performed and broadcast live wholly in Canada

* L – Lyrics, lyrics are written entirely by a Canadian

 

There are four special cases where a musical selection that does not meet the above criteria can still qualify as CanCon:

 

* The selection was recorded before 1971 and meets at least one of the above criteria

* The selection is an instrumental performance of a composition composed or written by a Canadian

* It is a performance of a musical composition that a Canadian has composed for instruments only

* The “Bryan Adams” Clause

 

Unfortunately, I can’t force my friends in C3 to adhere to these regulations (although farottone will inevitably point at all of his Rush and yell at me), and my obligations (and RB:HP commitment) limit my ability to author CanCon customs to satisfy the quota myself. Nevertheless, I feel an obligation to do my civic duty and bang on the drum pushing for CanCon customs to enter the foray. As such, in this thread I will be going out of my way to suggest (and request) CanCon selections for my peers, C3 contributors, and other customs authors to enter into their consideration set. If you’ve got something that fits the above criteria, and which may not be better suited to another request thread, list it here — my preference is for things that “feel” particularly Canadian, and thus this list tends to gravitate towards the older stuff and an abundance of Canadian hits that didn’t do squat outside of our borders.

 

But do me a favour and give them a listen — you might be surprised.

Second, I do have a Canadian band in mind. I won’t say who they are, because I plan on doing a three pack with of their songs. Good news is that the songs are without keys, so I should be able to handle them. By the way, this paragraph has a clue in it, so good luck with that.
