Recommendation thread – Your favorite customs by instrument?

Back during the DLC, RBN and later C3 days of Rock Band 3 I often found myself using the new releases as a way to discover new music that was fun to play each week. Now with the advent of the customs database there is now an enormous number of songs available, and lately I’ve found myself mostly downloading customs of songs by artists I really like or authored by authors I know very well. It feels like I’m missing out on a lot of fun songs simply by virtue of there being too many.
There haven’t been many recommendation threads on this forum either, so I thought this could perhaps be a fun way to try and get the ball rolling. For each instrument that you play regularly, I want you to name one song that you would consider your favorite to play. Easy or challenging song, it doesn’t matter, just make it one that you’ve found yourself returning to play over and over for any reason.
And so, here’s my recommendations:
Guitar: Thousand Leaves – Reve of Mirrors
A Touhou metal song consisting mostly of two guitar solos. The solos have you playing fast scales up and down the frets a lot, and it’s simply a blast to play. The pace is pretty brisk, but if you’re an experienced RB guitar player it shouldn’t be enough to make your fingers too tired. Also personally I love the melody the song is based on, so even the parts where all you do is playing along with the melody are really fun to me.
Bass: Skrillex – The Devil’s Den (ft. Wolfgang Gartner)
A dubstep song featuring glitchy sounding bass and 3 (THREE) long bass solos. The glitchly strumming parts surprised me at first but they aren’t too bad once you get the hang of them, and they’re also really fun to play once you do. None of the solos are too difficult but are varied enough that they remain really fun to play, and as someone who freaks out whenever I see a bass solo, getting to play three of them in a single song is really awesome.
Drums: Dream Theater – The Dance of Eternity
A prog metal song featuring perhaps the highest density of time signature changes you’ve seen. While the drum part is highly complex and would no doubt take a lot of time to learn to actually play on a drum kit, it surprised me how doable it is in Rock Band when you have the note lane as your guide throughout. There isn’t any part that feels unfairly difficult in anyway, although a few sections require some pretty good limb independance in order to nail. I’d recommend listening to the song a bit before playing it because the rhythm changes a lot throughout the song and will most likely catch you off guard on your first playthrough otherwise. All in all however this is one of the most varied drum charts I’ve ever played with something always happening.
Pro Keys: Hiromi: The Trio Project – Spark
A piano driven jazz song in 9/16 with a lot of complex patterns. Since I first discovered this song I just can’t get enough of playing it. There is just so much going on in this song that it will take some major practice to get it down, but once you do it’s nothing short of amazing to play. The song never reaches a note density higher than 16ths except during one short part, and so it feels very fair to play in the engine while a lot of the faster pro keys songs often end up unfun to play because the engine is just too strict. There is some downtime after the first piano solo while the drums get their solo but really it’s just nice to get a break after the highly complex solo. This is by no means an easy song to play but if you’re experienced enough to take it on it’s highly worth it.
Vocals: Eir Aoi – Sirius
An energetic anime opening song from Kill la Kill. Without a doubt vocals is the most subjective instrument in many regards, not in the least when it comes to what songs are fun to sing. And so this makes my number one spot simply because I have such a fun time belting out the chorus of the song. When I watched the anime with my friend we used to sing along with the opening at the top of our lungs even though it sounded horrible, and now I get to do the same thing in Rock Band. If you like the song you should definitely try your hand at singing it, and if you haven’t heard it, well give it a listen, it’s by all means a good song.

I only play bass and whilst there are many amazingly fun things to play ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is my pick. The song is one of the very best anyway and the bass chart is simply majestic.
my favorites songs maybe are:

A interesting song with an oriental style, the shamisen charted on part guitar is really fun, scales up & down on all chorus.
- Bass: Noma – Brain Power
The extended Bass Solo + good venue, pff! Brain Explosion!!
This is maybe the limit for my arms, basically an instrumental DragonForce, fastest bpm, fastest fills, fastest single pedal…
- Vocal: Focus – Hocus Pocus (Live)
Most of my time i play the guitar after bass, keytar or vocal, i never played drum, but i see some charts videos.

Nothing to say, just epic!
Bass: Bliss Team – You Make me Cry
Really a 90´s dance/techno song very fun to play.
Guitar: Enoz – God Knows
The rif bridge is very fun to play, epic solo and the final part leaves you to heaven.
Vocal: Spandau Ballet – True
Very romantic song, powerful vocals, the sax and chorus is unbelievable.
Drum: (maybe) Deep Purple – burn
The drums exploding on that song….Like popcorn
I only play drums but any of my Chicago songs especially the earlier stuff is going to be fun on all instruments. Shameless plug over

Ten Years After – I’d Love to Change the World (From bsbloom. Awesome song with awesome lead guitar playing)
Opeth – Burden (Conversion from Sideshow/Beard. Guitar only custom with the keyboard solo annoyingly charted to guitar, but nonetheless a very fun song on guitar.)
I’m sure there’s a lot more I’m forgetting but these are the ones I always play when I play guitar.

Six Gallery – Honestly, Really? (One of the best math rock bands, please check this band out. Their guitarists are amazing at what they do and their vocalist is the absolute best in the genre as far as I’m concerned)
This Town Needs Guns – Chinchilla (TTNG’s guitarist is an extremely talented and creative player. Fun song on drums too!)
Mastodon – Pendulous Skin (This is my favorite song to play on real guitar so it follows that it’s a ton of fun in Rock Band as well. One of Mastodon’s more laid back and bluesy jams, Brent Hinds is in his absolute element on songs like this.)
Drums:
+1 for Hiromi: The Trio Project – Spark, this song is awesome on drums and quickly became one of my favorites.
Mastodon – The Last Baron (From BearzUnlimited. I think I have his alternate version with ghost notes added. The huge middle/bridge section of this song is amazing on drums.)
Converge – All We Love We Leave Behind (From Boblybob, a great customs author that released a few customs on the forums back in the day and then disappeared. This song is extremely difficult due to speed, general pattern, and the y/g/r crossups but it’s a ton of fun once you get it down.)
Between the Buried and Me – Swim to the Moon (See above. Possibly one of the easier BTBAM songs all things considered but still a good challenge and easily my favorite of all BTBAM songs on drums)
Alexisonfire – No Transitory (From thespike. Drums only custom but it’s very well charted and a lot of fun to play.)
The Fall of Troy – Mouths like Sidewinder Missiles (See above, but this also has guitar charted. One of my favorite FoT songs with some manic but enjoyable drumming)
Some self plugs for drums:
Cynic – Carbon-Based Anatomy (I chose to chart this entirely because of the drums. It’s very technical, but not overwhelmingly so. Check this video out)
Dillinger Escape Plan – Mouth of Ghosts (My sole drums-only custom. Also my favorite DEP track, due in part to the great jazz drumming throughout the song.)
Intronaut – City Hymnal (Fairly difficult song with lots of crossups and paradiddles, but it’s one of Intronaut’s best and an awesome song on drums. Also, drum solo!)
Intronaut – Fast Worms (Not as hard as City Hymnal and possibly more enjoyable as a result. The instrumental section towards the end of the song and huge climax make for one of my (shamelessly) favorite drum songs. I think this is Intronaut’s strongest song in terms of songwriting, everything falls into place, builds beautifully and just feels right.)

Here are some recommendations for vocals, bass, and guitar. I don’t have a drum kit, and I mostly play on Medium for pro keys, so can’t really say much about those. I’m gonna rule out anything I worked on myself, so here are some recommendations from other authors.
Vocals – “We Are One” by Buckethead and Friends – Don’t be mistaken, this song is intense, but also really fun. There’s plenty of fast vocals, weird talky parts, and the bridge provides a really hard long note that goes everywhere. Note that the current Keepitfishy link is giving an error, so look in the comments to a reupload I did for this one (with NL’s permission).
Guitar – “No ‘W’/Psalm 23” by Ministry – This one’s got some fun strum patterns, tricky chorus patterns, and also the solo from the Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 cut, making this incredibly fun on guitar.
Bass – “Brain Power” by NOMA – This one includes a very lengthy dubstep solo, and the rest of the song is nothing to sneeze at, either. A must-have for bass players!
