The only real guitar that Rock Band 3 supports is the out of print Fender Squier guitar. You have to have the MIDI pro adapter that translates that guitar’s communication to signalling appropriate for your game console.

If you don’t mind playing along with the song, outside of the game, you can just connect the MIDI pro adapter to the game console, start the pro guitar/bass part and play the tablature with your own instrument.

If you want to use any regular electric guitar in a rhythm game, you should look into Rocksmith. Rock Band 3 only supports the Squier and the Mustang guitars in-game for pro guitar mode.

Yeah you’re best bet for a real guitar is to get Rocksmith instead. They do this better in RB in every way

If you REALLY want to use any guitar, a solution like this is required, and I really doubt this works as well as the official thing. Also, since this works with sound and not MIDI per say (MIDI data is created with sound basically), you will need to sound good if you use this solution.

They are separate games. You can use charting tools like EOF to port CDLC from one game to the other if that’s what you mean, but Rock Band 3 supports far fewer guitar techniques than Rocksmith.
