I’m kinda new (I used to be active in the custom scene back in the day, but I’ve kinda forgotten how to do things…) to authoring, and have some dumb questions that can be answered rather easily.
1. Reaper bug? Or did I do something stupid?
So when I’m navigating through the project on Reaper, I find that if I scroll to time zero (measure 1 beat 1), it jumps me forward a bit, so I only get a glimpse of time zero while my mouse is still pressed down. The amount it flips me forward is proportional to the scale I have the horizontal scrollbar set to, so if I’m completely zoomed out and try to go to time zero, it flips me forward a few measures, for example. This is kinda problematic since I can’t access the text events at time zero.
2. Authoring drums with disco flip
When authoring parts that flip yellow and red, should I chart it as it should be played? Like should I have red as hihat and yellow as snare? Or does RB3 take care of flipping that for me, so I should chart stoically with yellow always on hihat and red always on snare? Also, what text event starts disco flip, and what event stops it?

In essence, for disco flips sections only, put hi hat on red and snare on yellow. Then, as Text events on Drums, put [mix # drums0d] right before the first hit and [mix # drums0] right after the last one of the section. # is the difficulty level number, 3 for Expert, 2 for Hard, etc. (you already have those events at the start of your drums track). You rarely want to have disco flip for Hard and never for Medium and Easy, as a general rule, so you will usually just flip Expert and use the [mix 3 drums0d] text event.

Another problem though: I hear a crackle every now and then when playing the song, any ideas for that? It’s drums, guitar, and vocals only (so far), and I’ve been using the stereo 44 Hz 16 bit dummy files. I saw someone had a similar problem in another thread, and the conclusion was that there’s a bug where it’ll distort the right side of the backing track. But it was said that this only happens when there’s 1-2 instruments, and I have three.

Is your backing track mono or stereo? Have you tried, as a test, assigning it to one of the instruments instead of backing?
January 6, 2014 at 8:59 am #411710Stereo, captain.
Everything is stereo, 44 kHz and 16-bit.
And I just tried moving it to the bass track, and I’m still getting a slight bit of crackle, albeit significantly less.
Also tried it with a guitar-bass-drum-vox song: same results.
I extracted the mogg with LeFluffie, and I don’t hear any crackling. For me at least, this seems really strange.

Then it’s not an issue with Magma: any issue with that will show up in the mogg file. Are you sure your tracks are not clipping?
January 6, 2014 at 12:03 pm #411718That could be the case. How can I tell?
Is there a dB cutoff?
The crackles are not random, they always appear in the same place of the song. So yeah, I think you’re onto something here.

When you render from Reaper, make sure the dB monitor never goes in the red.
January 7, 2014 at 7:32 pm #411792Can you be a little more specific?
I assume you’re talking about the master monitor, but then again at the points where the clipping occurred, I don’t really see anything different.
And when I do figure that out, what do I do from there to fix it?
EDIT: Could I just use the built in attenuator in magma? Around how many dBs should I attenuate to get rid of just a little bit of crackle?

-1.0 to -3.0, but make sure the original file is clean.
