So, I read plenty of “they could have left in 5-lanes”, “they could have left in the ability to play pro G/B for legacy songs”, etc. No, they probably could not have because it didn’t fit with what they are trying to sell now. They want to sell a game with a no-hassle policy on perpherals (you either have them or you can buy them new), a game that is 100% a game (the game part of RB3 was over in a week) and a game that appeals to people who want to feel like they are playing music. That’s it. Agree or not agree, the complete package should probably look like this and not like something in the middle.

No argument there. RB4 retaining what RB2 had makes a lot more sense than RB4 half-heartedly keeping what was in RB3 if they’re not going to fully support the newer instruments anyway.

I still think it would have been possible to create a new product with the single vision that you speak of while keeping the bits the rest of us want. Basically it would have been what RB3 should have been in the first place, with more of the “game” and better integration of pro stuff for those who wanted it. But of course I get why that isn’t what they’re aiming for, and I’m not asking them to change RB4’s vision now. Maybe RB4.1.

Customs have always been a thing since during the heyday of Guitar Hero II. I don’t see any reason for them to stop happening, if that’s what this survey is hinting at. The way I see it, RB4 will probably be a great game, and RB3 will continue to be used as a platform for customs.

Well, customs and C3 are two very different things

I just hope C3 moves on to RB4 when it comes out

Unlikely. No one here wants to take away business from Harmonix. Releasing customs on a platform with active DLC support could do just that.

Well, don’t speak so firmly on something you don’t control.

There was a rather active customs community all during the life of RB3. If not for that, there would have been nobody to join together for C3. I’ve been in the customs thing since December of 2011, and I know the GHtoRB3 guys were already at it from earlier that year and I know some people in ScoreHero were going at it prior to even RB3 releasing.

Releasing customs of songs available as DLC takes away business. Releasing custom content otherwise just makes more interest in the franchise. Back in the day most of us would pull our customs if/when an official version came out. I would imagine C3 would do the same if it continues into the future.

While I’m kinda bummed I won’t get to play my hundreds of customs, I’ll be making the switch to RB4 on the One.

Like I said in the announcement topic, there’s no reason for customs or C3 to stop just because it’s a new game. The higher-ups of HMX like what C3 is doing, there are no big publishers to stop customs from being put in this time, and we’re what comes up when you search for RB3 custom songs. The method may change, but the ideas and effort can and (IMO) should stay the same.

Forgive me if my phrasing implied I was speaking for others. I was basing my response on earlier answers to similar questions. My take-away from those conversations was, C3 as a group does not want to give even the impression they could be trying to dissuade people from paying for an actively supported platform. Porting RB4 songs to other platforms, promoting customs for the current platform (even customs that don’t overlap official DLC), and so on could be construed that way.

Of course people will be looking for back doors and figuring out ways to inject customs into the game the moment it hits store shelves. No one can stop that and I doubt anyone here would even try. Probably quite the opposite. But what “C3” officially does, well… I’ll let you C3’ers speak for yourselves.

To be clear, I’m not part of the C3 administration any longer and all those decisions are made by them, not me. I guess I have a say in what goes on my server, but I greatly defer to the admins to do what they do well.

My observations are on the same level as yours. I’ve seen customs before C3, and I know customs will continue after C3. What I would hate to see happen is that C3 stops releases and then decides to not keep up the C3 forums, which are two separate things. Because that just means the customs community will continue but fragmented across whatever websites they can make a camp on. Back then it was Xbox360 ISO and ScoreHero mainly, but I think that C3 is a good place to congregate the customs community as a whole and I would like to see that go forward, even if C3 steps down from regular or even any releases at all.

But customs will live on. And yes, trust that I and a few others are already thinking of ways to poke a hole in the file system … and we don’t even know what that file system will be :haw:

My plan is, I’m getting RB4 as soon as it comes out. However, I’m still going to make and release customs through C3 for as long as possible. There are a ton of songs I want in the game that for some reason or other will never see an official release, and I still have many songs that were destined for RBN that I need to release. So I’ll still be popping in RB3 to play customs and non-transferable songs.

If RBN comes back though, I’m jumping straight in, and all my RBN rescues will be repurposed for official release. I’ll still do certain other customs on the side, but the majority of my time would be spent on that.

I just really really hope they have some kind of versus mode in this, I loved it in RB2 and was disappointed it wasn’t in RB3. I know they said it’s because only like 5% of the players used it, but it’s the least they could do since they’re dropping keys.

I really hope that they let the RBN work in places like Australia if they bring it back. It wasn’t fair that I couldn’t get any of those songs cause there was so many good ones. Don’t you want my money!?

Blame the RIAA and its Australian equivalent, that’s all copyright issues, not just Harmonix deciding not to release it there. They had the same issue with Rock Band Japan and their insane music industry.

It’s unclear what will happen with the DLC under expired licenses (e.g. Metallica) but it’s assumed that they won’t transfer unless/until Harmonix is able to reacquire those licenses.

You’ll be able to download anything you bought from the store, you just won’t be able to buy it for RB4 (or RB1/2/3, for that matter)

So you’ll be able to get the Metallica stuff just like you can now, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, etc. The only thing you’re going to lose are the things you can’t download now, anyway.

The amount of manual labor involved in getting the songs into the system for the current gen consoles from the previous gen is such that there’s no way they’re going to spend the effort to go in and down mix the keyboard stems into the backing track, or really do anything to the actual files themselves. (Something like 6 months of someone working 40 hour weeks doing NOTHING else, and never screwing up, just to get one platform done.) So in all likelihood the midi data for the keys charts, and the keys stems, and the pro guitar/bass for the ones that have it, will all be in the actual files, just waiting for Harmonix to update the game engine to parse the data out.

Also, a lot of people don’t seem to realize this, but harmonies are not guaranteed to be in RB4, they haven’t actually announced that. It’s likely, since the amount of work involved is not much compared to keys/pro guitar/pro bass, but very, very few people actually used the harmonies. (Since not many people bought RB3 compared to the prior ones) It’s down there with the “character creator” in terms of priority.

However, they are designing the game to be much more modular, so that they can add pieces (e.g., sell you them) later. So it’s possible they can add keys back in as a paid/free upgrade, or harmonies, or new gear for characters if you have them, etc. (There’s no reason to not add a character creator store that allows you to buy more dumb crap for your in game avatars, that’s how Valve and Relic make hell of money.)

I’m going to have to get an XBONE because all my DLC was on the 360, and MS should be paying Harmonix a bounty, considering how often I heard the same story at PAX about people who’d gone from 360 -> PS4, but I’m definitely keeping my 360 around to play custom stuff, even if it’s JUST custom stuff. Also, I basically play Pro Drums and Pro Keys, so I’m gonna have to keep the old system around to get my Keys fix.

And I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if, when they start releasing RB4 DLC, it’s all released for RB3 as well. After all, why not? They won’t have new instruments or something that RB3 won’t have. So, why NOT release the songs for the older audience? If the QA cost is marginal, then it won’t take much in sales on the RB3 stores to justify the release, even “hundreds” of sales should be sufficient to justify a few hours of old gen QA to make sure the songs don’t break on PS3/360 (Wii is probably hosed) That’s just speculation, though.
