I always try not to get my hopes up. They have rarely ever come through for me. But that’s because Big for me would mean an artist that hasn’t appeared, or rarely appeared, or highly requested. So Guns N Roses, Rolling Stones, Beatles (everyone asks for exports), Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc.

They can really go on announcing this, for my personal taste, mediocre mix of too little classics of any era and too many modern songs with no real weight as long as they hurry up and announce the RPG aspect of the game. Seeing it as one of the possible reasons to mention because of no preorders alongside info on the MIDI adapter makes me uneasy: if RB4 is as short to play in terms of storyline as RB3, it can have the best setlist ever but I’m probably still not gonna play it a lot.

It’s Van Halen (probably, unless this is a weird same-day coincidence).

[…] EW can exclusively reveal that Van Halen’s classic hit “Panama” will be featured on the Rock Band 4 setlist. For a taste of what to expect from the song, check out the video above.

But Van Halen’s presence in the game won’t end there — more tracks will be available later on from Van Halen as downloadable tracks from the Rock Band Music Store. […]

Yeah, I’m not loving it either… when the game was announced I was thinking about whether I would buy a xbone just for RB4, but the answer to that is starting to look pretty clear…

It’s Van Halen’s “Panama”. Credit where credit is due, that is a big get for harmonix, and sorta shows the exclusives are pretty much over. And more DLC coming later which is awesome. Now let’s get Metallica back in there.

Awesome get. Still, I don’t mind the setlist, give me my long lasting career mode!

C3 isn’t going to want to hear this…but a VH announcement would’ve pushed me off of the fence into the “pre-order” and Xbox One purchase categories all by themselves had I not known that customs exist. But after discovering this place…I can already play more VH than HMX will probably ever license right now in RB3…and it’s a tough decision to make. I am still undecided about what to do.

That said…Van Halen is a really good get, fits in perfectly with the “back to core 4 instruments” vibe (just don’t tease people with “Jump”, okay?), and will make a lot of people really happy. The GH Van Halen converts that exist on this site are a blast to play, and are songs that everybody wants to play at parties.

                    #452910

Not a big reveal to me. Activision was giving away a whole disc of VH songs due to lack of interest. Am I supposed to be excited for one song and some possible future DLC?

That being said, if there were never a GH:VH game and the RB3 conversions that followed, this would have been a very good on disc song.

I’m disappointed. Why? Because HMX continues to operate as if Guitar Hero didn’t exist.

I’m not a fan of Van Halen, only liked some of the Metallica songs, and i’m a fairly bad Aerosmith fan. But if I was a fan of either band, guess what? I would have played their GH games and have had my fill of their songs. Considering that they’re announcing Van Halen songs for the Rock Band franchise almost 6 years after the game was released, why should I be excited? If they were being released for RB3 with keys/pro keys, pro guitar/ pro bass, maybe. But as it stands, we’re not getting much more out of Van Halen in RB4 than we did in GH:VH.

And so it may be a “big get” for Harmonix, but I don’t think it’s nearly as big for fans of Van Halen, is my point. And so I’m disappointed.

Just remember who made C3 and customs possible. Harmonix. So in a way, if you want to show your support for C3, buy Rock Band 4.

When I read Harmonix’s release this morning, my reaction was similar to yours. I’ve since realized that while I am stoked for RB4, I’m not that stoked. Back when RB2 and RB3 were coming down the pipe, I couldn’t wait to hear more details and was counting the days until each game’s release. Now with RB4, I’m eagerly looking forward to it, but at the same time I’m happily occupied with other things until the game comes out. RB4 sloughing off features I actually like is a big part of that, but admittedly so is the custom scene. And, as a budding customs author, I even get to mold that scene somewhat, and control what I get to play.

But… none of this would exist were it not for Harmonix. And Harmonix has even shown respect and gratitude to the customs community, as much as the company has been able to without impacting their business relationships. Comments from former employees and the company’s embrace of the Rock Band Harmonies Project is proof of that. So, while I may still find myself playing RB3 more than RB4, I’m still going to buy RB4, to show my support for the company that, so far at least, has shown good support for me.

And they can show even more support by getting e-kits working in RB4…

                        Not sure if serious, but…

I consider myself a Van Halen fan, and I’m excited to see them coming to Rock Band. Now we can play these songs with a decent vocal engine and a more authentic drum kit (RB3 customs notwithstanding, of course), and we can play them in a mix with a lot of other great songs, not just a few a dozen or a lot of disc-swapping (yeah, I know, some songs could export, but even with all the exports, the GH “platform” was a joke compared to RB’s). Keys and pro strings would have been nice too, but… oh well.

Also, Aerosmith is a bad example, given Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was not a full-band game.

I’m always serious. You missed the point. I wasn’t arguing that RB isn’t a better product than GH.

But to be like OMG we got a huge artist OMG you’re going to be so excited is pure bullshit.

If they had announced Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin or some other band that to date no other game had gotten, that is worth saying it’s a big deal.

But a band that had their own entire game already? That’s just a decent get at best. They blow things out of proportion. It would be warranted if GH:VH, GH:A or GH:M hadn’t existed. But since they do, HMX needs to realize it’s not as big as they’re thinking it is.

And of course, my opinion is further affected by customs and the fact that i’ve been playing Panama since 2013, but I wasn’t getting to that point.
