January 14, 2015 at 6:13 pm #436276Yeah I usually do use Songsterr, and it makes the Bass/Guitar charting go pretty quickly and smoothly. But in this case, the bass chart was waaaaaaay off and I had to do it by ear, which is taking me a LOT longer.
No good MIDIs around? Shame, but sometimes it happens sadly.
January 14, 2015 at 6:24 pm #436277Yeah. I’ll get it done, it will just be even slower than usual ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
March 4, 2015 at 9:07 pm #439736Well, I’m sorta bummed out and just wanted to get it off my chest.
I’m trying to work on this song, It’s Only Rock and Roll, but it’s just not being cooperative. I don’t have a lot of time to work on it, and it doesn’t help that I’m also lazy. But today I had some time and decided to try again to find a midi to help me. This particular song is not a common sight on midi sites in the first place, so when I did find one I was happy. So I plop it into reaper and take a look and now I’m depressed. The bass is nowhere near accurate, just like the songsterr chart. What, do they all get the charts from the same place or something? I mean, it’s SO off I can’t believe they even listened to the song at all. Unless, and this is very possible, I am not hearing the real bass part or am confusing it with another instrument. If that is the case, I should retire from listening to music at all because I apparently fail at it. The guitar part seems much more accurate, though, so once I calm down I may try again and start from there. But that still leaves the bass part, which I am slowly making progress with by ear but it is taxing.
Now maybe this song is just beyond my abilities as a charter, which is not that great anyway. But there isn’t a whole lot I can do about that either because I am thoroughly unable to tempo map. I have tried, several times. I watched all the videos on it and read the tutorials, and I feel like I get it. But when I actually try and do it, things don’t seem to add up.
Ah, whatever. Sorry for the long complaint. It’s just that there are a lot of songs I love and want in Rock Band so bad, and C3 gave me such hope. My initial charts seemed to go fairly well, too, but somewhere along the line the wheels fell off. In the end it seems my ceiling for charting ability is quite low, and that’s a tough realization to make.
I haven’t totally given up yet but I think time is running out ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_frown.gif” />

Thanks for sharing, man. It sucks when you pour your heart and soul into getting it right and you realise what you did is still off.
Trust me, it’s very recogniseable and relatable, self-doubt and tempo-mapping issues included.
I’ve experienced some charting setbacks myself and I don’t have a solution handy.
Still I think a lot, if not all people who chart, go through this. At least the ones who keep on charting.
If the song doesn’t work for you, maybe put it aside for a bit.
Or take a break if you feel burnt out.
For what it’s worth: I had a lot of fun with the work you shared.
I’m relatively new to charting, even moreso than you, so I might be way off, as I haven’t succesfully come out of the struggle.
Keep going at it and you’ll most likely realise a bit later on that you’ve succeeded in raising your ceiling.
It’s what I hope and expect to be true.
That and some songs are just assholes.
(Songs can’t be assholes)
March 5, 2015 at 6:50 pm #439864Thanks for the kind words, Jimi. I think I’m more frustrated at my lack of effort than my lack of ability. You can’t get better if you don’t practice. I’ll keep on truckin’, for now.
April 20, 2015 at 8:35 pm #443299Holy crap it’s an update with actual progress!
Not only that but a song to test out. No, not the one you all knew I was working on, but something different.
It is:
This preview version is at the moment untested, so try at your own risk.
Any feedback is more than welcome, just wrap it in a cookie please ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
April 20, 2015 at 9:16 pm #443301I’ll make you a preview and get back on feedback
April 21, 2015 at 4:05 pm #443390So in starting out my first drum chart today (yes, my first one ever) I have noticed some possible issues with the tempo map. I hope it’s just my charting that is in error, but I’ll post it in a bit to see if anyone can help me suss it out.
April 21, 2015 at 4:42 pm #443392If you don’t want to share it yet, PM me the file and I’ll check it out.
April 22, 2015 at 7:49 pm #443471Here is an updated version, now with fixed tempo map and drum chart!
Yes this is my first drum chart ever. I’m such a drum newb that I can’t even tell the different drum sounds apart, so I’m sure it’s all kinds of messed up! PLEASE set me straight! No need for a cookie this time.
Tomorrow: guitar!
April 22, 2015 at 9:53 pm #443479I’m not a drummer so I couldn’t even tell you if it’s right. I’m starting to chart songs and I’m sure my drumming is awful. Keep up the work either way! Can’t wait to play this on guitar!
April 23, 2015 at 3:07 pm #443529Thanks for the kind words, Tom.
Guitar is going really well. Should be able to get a test version out today. This song is moving faster than I anticipated, especially since I’m doing it by ear. Maybe next time I’ll just wait til I get a draft version of the entire song before posting it hehe. In fact the guitar is going so well that I may even get ambitious and do some manual animations for it. Will have to see what the auto-mations look like first ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
April 23, 2015 at 8:42 pm #443556Here are the guitar files:
I skipped the visualizer this time for some reason. But anyway I think the guitar turned out pretty decent for a draft version.
Tomorrow, vocals. I’m just doing unpitched vocals, so don’t get too excited. There probably won’t be any lipsynch until after the weekend.
April 27, 2015 at 6:43 pm #443912So, in case anyone was actually interested, Shake Shake Shake is all but done. I just put the finishing touches on it today, and I just have to do one final test run before I post it.
It feels good to be back in the game. Working on a relatively simple song like this has helped lift my self-esteem for charting. This should have me in good shape to start my new big project…
June 30, 2015 at 8:54 pm #449250Hey guys here is a small update:
The Hush Sound – Medicine Man
Progress: Mapped
It will probably be a while before this song comes out, as I’m in the midst of a separate huge project. Maybe I can at least drum up some interest by posting a video ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
It may seem like I’m not doing anything but trust me, I am ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> Having the unexpected success with Shakex3 really energized me so I embarked on a giant passion project. Cannot say more at this time. I’m really learning a lot as I work on this so hopefully when I return to single projects they will be better and faster. I actually kind of feel guilty every time I think of a song I want to chart but can’t start yet ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> My to-do is growing slowly but surely ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
Stay tuned.
