Please download a song and test it before asking questions about it?

What is “it”? Because the song correctly says 1988. Now, for some reason, the database says 2015. But you don’t help anyone by saying “it” is showing the wrong date.

I always pm admins about songs but tbh most of my choices are not going to be released through c3 but I do feel for dash + others

This is the worst C3 release in the history of ever.

It’s an inside joke from last week, hence the TMNT icon.

            Sorry. Please forgive my ignorance.

Thomas Dolby She’s blinded me with science….that’s long ago

But is it a one hit wonder?

I remember the beautiful “I scare myself” and hyperactive

We in Europe know him for the really beautiful song I scare myself.

I have hyperactive on 12 inch vinyl I think

Europe’s chart logic has always eluded me. I don’t know why, but it’s the reason why Kayleigh was big over there but couldn’t really cross over. It’s the reason why Robbie Williams has been a massive superstar with dozens of hits everywhere except for the States. By this point, if a song is big in the UK, it could mean anything.

It’s just one of those unanswerable questions that will elude us until the end of time, like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie roll, or how Leigh Alexander still has a career, as far as I’m concerned.

It’s also true that the “look at this charts, they have more than one hit” logic would destroy any concept of One Hit Wonders, since at least locally a group is likely to have charted more than once, and at least in a sub-chart anyway.

You’ll pretty much never get full agreement on what the list of one-hit wonders really is. Chart activity is just one part of it, but chart activity actually works both ways. Depending on how strictly you define chart activity — say, a song is a hit only if it made the American Top 40 — then Rush and Emerson, Lake and Palmer could be considered one-hit wonders… and not because of their most famous tunes! Rush hit the top 40 only with “New World Man” while ELP hit only with “From the Beginning”.

Radio longevity also plays a part, but we can’t consider that by itself either. If we did, then Spandau Ballet is arguably a one-hit wonder. I suspect Farottone might disagree.

We can also go by intent. Is it fair to call Harold Faltermeyer a one-hit wonder when he really wasn’t trying to make a career out of being a pop artist, and actually did quite well for himself in the movie-music business? Bobby McFerrin falls in that same category. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” wasn’t supposed to be the monumental success it became, and it’s been something of a double-edged sword for McFerrin ever since.

But despite the lack of any one good definition, there is a collection of artists that the majority of people would call one-hit wonders. The ones in this week’s pack all fall in that collection. Your specific mileage may vary, here it seems the consensus has prevailed.

Fun set of releases – I’m looking forward to experiencing how the Bobby Ferrin track translates.

Dash – I love everything about your customs. The song choices, the quality you put into them, your productivity….you’re awesome.

I feel *so* bad for you when C3 releases a custom within a couple of weeks of you releasing one*. I understand that there’s significant lead time involved in these things (and I’m guessing that C3 already had these songs planned before you listed them in your WIP), but it seems to me that there *has* to be a better way to coordinate such things amongst the community. If you e-mailed Farottone before beginning any custom, and said “I’m planning on doing XYZ in the next two weeks…is this already in the C3 pipeline?”, I’m sure he’d let you know and you could save yourself that heartache. You can then spend that time catching up on sleep, doing *another* awesome song, or watching the paint dry. Whatever.

Maybe this is already cleared up. If so, then please disregard. In my real life, I work for a big company that has these silo issues, and it’s a constant source of annoyance. Doesn’t have to be like that.

*I actually feel bad for anybody who puts the amount of work you guys put into these things only to have them trumped by C3 (or even HMX back in the day). That has to be completely soul crushing at some level. As a customer/user, all I can give is a humble “thanks for all of this stuff”, and know that we feel bad for you when it happens.

I don’t think this is a fair representation of reality. I thought long and hard about replying but I think it’s good to explain how things work.

First of all, we don’t steamroll the work of community authors: if a song has already been released we work with the author to bring it up to C3 standards and release it officially. That means we devolve hours to helping the authors, explaining how we do things, telling them how they can fix things, etc. That’s an amount of time nobody forces us to put in, we do it because we care about the community. In the past mishaps happened and we didn’t see a previous release so we have worked on our from scratch, but those are rare cases.

If a community song gets released close to C3 release, I think you got the “chain of desperation” wrong. Clearly we feel for the authors who need to pull their version, but it’s part of the game, it’s in the forums rules. On the other hand, we usually have from 3 to 5/6 people working on any given song, for a considerable amount of time, for a delivery that relies on all songs being unique and new. When a song gets released right before we do, all those efforts are jeopadized by the fact that more than a few users will think “Oh, I already have that song anyway”, when in fact we put in A LOT of hours just so that we have a definitive version.
