I found this app a couple of years ago and I just thought of it again recently for Rock Band authors. Basically they say they have an advanced algorithm to reduce vocals in music, it doesn’t work in all songs but in many i’ve tried it’s pretty fantastic. The instruments get kind of tinny though, so if someone wanted to make psuedo-multitracks they should be tweaked.

I love all instruments on Rock Band (especially singing), and custom tracks without multitracks are usually kind of weak as you can’t turn down the vocals – as opposed to instrument tracks where multitracks aren’t as important (personally). So i’m guessing if someone wanted to use this, you could have the original with clear vocals as the vocal track and the new track as all other instruments – with the ability to turn the ‘vocal track’ all the way down right? So when you’re playing with no singer you hear the original vocals.

Anyway, some of you may find it handy or not but I thought I should let you talented authors know about it <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

Here are some samples i just whipped up quickly, tell me what you think. They’ll play the original clip then the tweaked version. Heading out to the Highway is especially cool because you can hear the backing vocals isolated.

These are really common programs. They invert either the left or right channel and then combine them, and the result is that sounds panned to the center of the soundscape are phased out. They claim it’s a vocal filter because most songs these days have the vocals panned to the center, but the problem is so are the drums and bass in 99% of cases. These quick “karaoke” filters are more or less useless because unless you are using top-end software, there’s tons of errors and noise in the phasing, the quality goes down, the end result is mono-only, and it effects any other instruments panned to the center (bass, drums, etc) and there’s no way to obtain the opposite mix (an isolated vocals stem).
