I’m posting this now in case there is a version of this floating around that I’m unaware of. I don’t want to get too involved in something that’s already been done.
I chose this song as my first custom for many reasons.
1. Unchanging tempo
2. Instruments are distinct and easy to hear.
3. Love the group
4. Wife loves the song
I’ll be doing MHX and will be adding Easy on drums which will be expert without the bass. I’ll be doing this for my wife cause she hates playing the bass drum. Sorry, no vocals or keys but I will share all the files in case someone wants to do them themselves. I only ask that you share it with the community.
If this goes well, I’ll be doing a lot more. Classic Rock and Hairbands galore!
I’ll be posting the reaper files and audio in the next couple days so the experts can check my progress and give me feedback. I have the Expert Drums, Bass and Guitar pretty well done. Working on animations now. So, I give you……
January 16, 2014 at 12:22 am #412291Awesome!
I’ve been wanting this song forever…
Oh and…
If this goes well, I’ll be doing a lot more. Classic Rock and Hairbands galore!January 16, 2014 at 1:09 am #412297Great choice to start with! Hope it goes well. Looking forward to what more you’ll be doing!
January 16, 2014 at 1:21 am #412300Any reason you’re not doing vocals? This nice custom would be a whole lot cooler if you did. It would also be a shame to do more sweet rock songs without vocals. We can never get enough full band 80’s rock.

A few reasons vocals won’t be included.
1. I have ZERO musical background.
2. I don’t have a working microphone.
3. I can’t sing worth a lick, neither can my wife.
4. There are a lot of songs I want to do and working 60 hours a week in my normal life doesn’t leave much time to spend on customs let alone get to play any.
5. From watching pksage’s video, it looks like a huge learning curve, which I just don’t have the time for.
6. Did I mention I can’t sing?
Maybe someday when I have a decent library to work from, I delve into it, but it certainly won’t be a Steven Tyler song. That guy’s all over the place.
If someone wants to jump in and do the vocals/keys, I’ll provide all the files, just as long as they share with the community.

Excellent idea which I will probably implement.
Here’s a preview of Bass and Drums. Sorry for image and sound quality. Need to clean up the guitar solo a bit (not shown). Probably like most rookies, I overcharted the heck out of it. Animations on drums complete, still need to do bass and guitar and add the overdrive sections. Reaper files will be up in a day or 2.

I thought almost all the same things before I tried charting. It’s not as hard as you think.
1. Neither do I nor a large portion of others who chart. It probably helps, but isn’t necessary.
2. Can you buy one? They’re not that expensive.
3. You don’t need to be able to sing to chart. You just have to recognize pitches.
4. I think this applies to almost all of us who make customs. Life gets in the way, but we do it for the love of the game.
5. It’s way easier than it looks. Getting started on your first chart is the hardest part and doesn’t take that long.
6. Did I mention that having another person doing rock customs is awesome? Just needs vocals.
If you haven’t watched Nyxyxylyth’s youtube video about charting vocals, do so. Very helpful. The thread with the link is in the authoring tools forum. Key things to pay attention to are utilizing the scrub tool and cutting off consonant sounds. I believe he also mentions a pitch detecting tool that you can buy and plug a microphone into. It should help figure out pitches. Another way to help with pitch detection is downloading midi files of songs you’re doing. They can help as a starting point to help find pitches, but don’t count on them being entirely acccurate. They will also not account for pitch slides most of the time.
I hope you decide to try and tackle vocals… You don’t have to aim for perfection your first time. Just try and get something out there. Myself and many others will be grateful.

January 21, 2014 at 4:12 am #412615So, here is the con file for anyone wanting to play test. All difficulties are done on drums, guitar and bass. Overdrive will appear in the final version. Once that version is up in the “Other Customs” forum, this file will be taken down. Give me your thoughts, ideas, critiques, praise, whatever. Remember, this is the first one I’ve ever done, so it’s probably not as polished as what you’ve come to expect. Here, it is.

Now, while you’re going over that and hopefully giving feedback, I’m going to take a break from this song and start on the next which I’ll try vocals on. If it goes well, I’ll go back and do vocals on What It Takes. Keeping things slow for now and will work my way up to faster tempo songs when I get more experience.
January 21, 2014 at 12:37 pm #412631I’ll give the song a go tonight. Really loving your song selection so far! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

Also happy to see you’re giving vocal charting a try. If you have any questions I will try and help. Always happy to help bring more rock to Rock Band.
January 25, 2014 at 11:42 pm #412907Like A Rock and What It takes will be released Monday or Tuesday. Having a blast playing them and putting the finishing touches on them.
Meanwhile, here’s a preview of the next song. Drums are done and most of the guitar…

I’ve wanted Amanda in RB for years!!! Thank you!!
January 30, 2014 at 6:13 am #413146Oh man, I haven’t checked out this thread in awhile. Like a Rock is a great choice. Can’t wait to see a finished version. Seger is definitely on my radar for future stuff, but I’m glad someone else beat me to it. I hope you keep at it!
