Got some cool ideas on things you’d like to see added or improved to C3?
Make a post here!
Something I’d like to see, is a subforum for organizing collaborations/charting help.
For example you could post about a band you’d like to chart, and see if anyone else wants to chart said band too,
or if you want some advice on a track, or just don’t feel motivated to chart a track in an otherwise finished song you could make a thread and see if any bored authors decide to help you out.
I quite enjoy charting one or two tracks to help someone out even if I don’t like the track much, and I think this would allow for much more efficiency for the community as a whole
I also think collaborated songs could be represented better in the song DB, but one thing at a time.
July 17, 2013 at 5:03 pm #403134a) This board is suitable for discussing collabs you might want to keep hidden from the public eye. I had considered doing one on the ‘public’ side but I figured getting someone to post a WIP and ask for others to collab would work just as well (lest we get six thousand people agreeing to collab and going nowhere).
Contributors are credited in the db and blog posts based on the info we get from the submitting author. If two authors collaborated, both are generally credited; if one author was the lead, they get the db mention and other dontributors get a blog post mention. If a bunch of people put a ton of work in, we can probably make up some group/generic heading for the db, and put specifics in the blog post, but I really don’t see a good space in the db for listing every possible component of the chart and the user’s contribution(s) towards it. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
July 17, 2013 at 5:24 pm #403138While collaborations do technically work in the author discussion forum, if there was a separate subforum for collaborations, then people would be thinking about it, and would check it to see if there was collaborations to help with and would make threads of their own, which they might not have done if they were unprovoked. More collaborations means more/faster tracks.
Yeah I hadn’t done any in-depth thinking to how collaborations would be best represented in the songs db, but It’d be nice if it was represented in the DB. I did notice that they are mentioned in detail in the blog posts, but I don’t think all of the downloaders will read all of the blog posts, and might end up just thinking one guy did all the work (The horror!)
I do agree that it really isn’t a big issue, but it could be better.
July 17, 2013 at 9:24 pm #403145In cases where multiple authors were a major contributor, we can list that, but if it’s looking like 4-5 people, we can release it with a more generic entry (“C3 Collab”) or, for a team, build their own. It’s just a mess to try and store/show in the DB.
I can understand your rationale for adding a separate collab board, but I don’t yet see enough of a value proposition to justify its creation, I guess.
July 18, 2013 at 1:01 am #403161I like the idea of a Collaboration board too. I am fairly open to doing a lot of songs by artists that I like and finding a collaborator with the same tastes is great. DVDSmith and I are doing exactly that on songs by a band that we both like and it is working out great. We settled on a band to work on together and then after that decided which songs to do. That is a lot easier than choosing the songs first. So a board set aside to facilitate this approach would work for me In any case, thanks for the consideration.
July 18, 2013 at 11:09 am #403181I’d probably only be down for a collab board to put in my unfinished songs or if I wanted to an album, since I don’t have nearly enough patience to do one.
July 18, 2013 at 11:28 am #403183Personally I have no problems with a subforum, but I’m not sure what it would bring to the people considering we’re already using this forum for collaborations. Would people really flock to help just because now there’s a specific forum instead of the Authors discussions forum that has provided the same function for the July 4th pack and the Meme pack that’s being discussed? Again, I personally se no problems in creating one but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a drastic change in authors habits, because we all can right now open discussions here anyway, and they’re closed to the public.
July 18, 2013 at 11:44 am #403187Yeah I was just about to reply and say I would entertain it as a subforum for the authoring board here (versus one for public consumption), but I still feel it has somewhat redundant functionality (as Farottone mentions, we are using this board for collabs and that was one of its intended functions). If the authors have demand for it, though, I mean I’m game for trying anything — worst case scenario I can always blow it up and move threads back. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>

July 20, 2013 at 10:11 pm #403303I also think collaborated songs could be represented better in the song DB, but one thing at a time. The DB is, was, and always will be a slap-dash effort. Until I get paid for this, it’ll stay that way, so a lot of things are going to be…less than ideal.
If collabs become much more common than they currently are, I’ll normalize the DB to support one-to-many song->author relationships and list them appropriately. As it stands, I suspect the majority of our users care about the songs themselves far more than the authors.
July 20, 2013 at 10:25 pm #403305I think people forget we don’t get paid to do this…and quite the contrary…spend our money (and time) to make this happen!
July 21, 2013 at 12:00 am #403312I see nothing wrong though in asking for things that people think would make the system better. “Sorry, no resources to do that pal, though we’d love to” is the maximum effort required of us. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
