    (WARNING! I’ll run my mouth off A LOT in the following post. I’m new around here and I’m trying to pitch my idea, so please forgive me for this!)

    (image made by me)

    Well, it’s as the title says. I had sent an e-mail to the C3 team last night and they suggested I pooled my idea here on the board.

    Here’s the thing: I had always pined for playing Led Zeppelin on RB, and never thought it possible before I found out that people did make customs for RB in addition to GH. And I’m fairly sure it can be done; it’s not like, as Jimmy Page said, we’d get frustrated out of out minds trying to beat Good Times Bad Times on drums. The best players can FC Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Dave Lombardo etc., so why wouldn’t they catch up with Bonzo?

    In fact, I always thought it perfectly possible to have licensed LZ tracks, since I found myself able to trump (or trample under foot, as it were) each reason Page’s (I talk about him because I don’t think Robert Plant cares that much about Led’s businesses anymore, seeing as he prefers to focus on his solo career, and I suppose John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham would be willing to reach a compromise, since they’ve both been represented in the series before) given over the years, that one above being just one of them.

    But anyway. Since Jimmy will most likely stay a stick in the mud until the day he dies and, thanks to that, Harmonix left my dreams (mine and those of people who wanted the same thing) unfulfilled, I suppose getting to do customs will be my only solution. But my project, the Celebration Day Track Pack, is a bit ambitious. I thought of doing for Zeppelin what HMX did for AC/DC, that is, take a live album and make playable songs out of it. I chose this one (from their 2007 show at the O2 Arena) because it’s the most recent, has their best-known hits, and we could do something HMX could have done. Of course, it’s not like it’s “multitrackable”, but we do what we can under the circumstances (and, considering the old argument that Led masters would be too old and with too bad a quality to be used, the sound professionals could use this one without a problem).

    So, in short, what I’m planning is to take the 16 songs from this album and chart them. Full band, all difficulties, no need for Pro Mode. Just for recap, the songs are:

    * Good Times Bad Times

    * Ramble On

    * Black Dog

    * In My Time of Dying

    * For Your Life

    * Trampled Under Foot

    * Nobody’s Fault but Mine

    * No Quarter

    * Since I’ve Been Loving You

    * Dazed and Confused

    * Stairway to Heaven

    * The Song Remains the Same

    * Misty Mountain Hop

    * Kashmir

    * Whole Lotta Love

    * Rock and Roll

    I came here expecting you could give these songs the professional treatment they deserve. And while it’s my idea, I know nearly nothing on how to make custom songs, chart the notes and stuff. So I’m expecting that I could either be taught on that step-by-step, get help from other people interested, or possibly both. I’m looking to turn this into a small dream coming true for me and other Zep-fans out there who are still playing RB3 in 2013 (sorry for the YouTube-worthy line, I just couldn’t let it slide).

    So, anyone wants to help out?

      This is your problem. My prediction? Never going to happen. Maybe i’m wrong.

      Also, your album art is way wrong. Madcatz logo? Can’t play customs with the Madcatz version of the game!

      I actually laughed so hard at this.

        If you could convince others to do the work, (and that’s a big IF) then people would probably want to chart the studio versions. I would imagine that over the course of 2-3 years someone would do most of these studio songs eventually.

        But if this is your dream then you’re likely going to have to learn how to make it happen, lead it, and do a lot of the work. Once you learn how and gain a bit of proficiency you can do about 3-4 songs a month.

          Pick a song — the simplest song — and go through the reference documentation. Look at some existing charts, look at existing video, and work through a chart one instrument at a time. As you get a feel for it, refine the chart until you get it where you want to be, posting samples for review and getting feedback from the community at large. Once you’ve got one song to that mostly-final, pretty polished state, you should have enough familiarity with the tools and processes to put the other songs together in relatively rapid fashion.

          With all due respect, and I mention this to anyone looking to take on an ambitious project who has little-to-no experience charting, nobody is going to give you a step-by-step run through of the entire process, because I doubt anyone has the time to devote to that right level of hands-on training. The time investment would be extremely steep, so much so that I wouldn’t expect anyone to do it out of the goodness of their heart on a one-on-one basis, and monetary compensation for hiring a “tutor” would, similarly, be extremely costly.

          You might get some other people willing to work on other components of the charting process based on their specialty, and thus you can stick to and focus on one area as it stands, but you’re probably going to have to be self-taught.

          I know we’ve talked about working on a tutorial (video and written), and they’ve been iterated upon a few times and scrapped a few times and tweaked a few times, mostly because you can’t give a checklist of steps to follow to chart a song. There’s too much… well, freeform and song-specific particularities and intricacies that come with practice and experimentation that a tutorial can’t adequately cover without turning into a giant reference manual… and we’ve got reference documentation already available to us.

          Honestly I think the best bet for a tutorial is going to be providing a guide on how to chart a public domain song so that we can provide reference points for you to check against your work, and then have people build upon that “knowledge” through charting their own works, but that’s a discussion for another time.

          The best way to start is here:

          “Holy moley that’s a whole lotta reading.”

          It sure is. Welcome to the world of custom authoring!

          We’re not shootin’ ya down. I think it’s a great and ambitious task you have here. When “Celebration Day” was announced for release for DVD, Blu-Ray, and CD, I prayed to all deities for HMX to score the multitracks from that concert. Now we got C3 and independent authors, but it still isn’t an easy task, as you can see from the docs. Some of us have small projects in the making, and you might find a couple of people eventually that will not mind lending a hand!

          And I think this topic would go better in the “songs request” subforum, that’s just me.

          Seriously though, Kusanagi, I hope you prove these guys wrong and chart the shit out of the LZ songs as I’d love to have them.

            Yes, yes it would.

            I hope you have the self-assurance to pull this trough…

            …because this would be freakin awesome!

            You know… somebody on the Frets On Fire forums already did the complete How The West Was Won Album as a FoFiX/Phase Shift Custom…

            That must’ve been plenty of work, maybe even more than Celebration Day…

            If you want to learn how to chart, I actually would recommend you start doing a simple song with this wonderful program called Editor of Fire (EoF)…

            Reaper is a fucking mess. It takes years to learn how this thing works. And there simply aren’t enough tutorials going around.

            That’s what I’m doing at the moment. I also am pretty new to charting and I’m currently working on my first song in EoF.

              You simply can’t create a proper custom without Reaper. You can lay out notes any way you want but sooner or later you will need to go through Reaper, which, truth be told, is not the most complex program ever.

              Yeah, I’m aware of that…

              But I think Reaper just ain’t something that gives you a feeling for charting songs. At least in my experiences…

              I will eventually get to Reaper, but in my opinion it’s just not the easiest way to get to know the process of charting.

              And I’m having a good time learning to use EoF. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

              Eh, I honestly have to disagree, I started right off with Reaper and I haven’t had very much trouble, and I’ve only been charting for a month now, and I’m able to make songs for my personal use that I actually like to play and aren’t bad quality (hence, why I’m deciding to start doing some releases).

              Just for variety, I’ve tried EoF and I honestly have more trouble working with that and trying to convert it over than just doing it with Reaper to start with. It can be a real pain in the ass. I do agree that Reaper isn’t the prettiest looking program, but when I got to know it, even just a little, I was able to start charting without much fuss. But hey, if you are having a good time with EoF, more power to you! I’m glad you are enjoying it!
