How do you do a tempo map when the waveform is incredibly unfun to work with?

I see. I’ve been scrubbing around a bit, but what would you say about the inconsistency of the BPM? Like, I could put a marker down a measure back to correct this measure but that messes up a future measure throughout this entire inconsistent section?
How can you mess up any future measure is the tempo for the current measure is correct? By the way, one marker per measure is not the most granular you can get, a lot of free tempo and prog songs require more than one marker per measure.

Because the BPM for the rest of the song is fine, it’s just that this section is weird.
I know what you mean… I’m charting a prog rock band’s whole discography (slowly). This whole song is in 7/4 or 6/4 (the part in the screenshot is in 6/4). Now I’m at this part where the drums come back in again and the waveform doesn’t match up with the snare drum or kick drum, or really anything with the drums.

It’s in 6/4 except during the intro, verses, and the outro, in which it is 7/4. The peaks line up nearly perfectly for every part of the song except this part (the guitar solo, albeit very quietly mixed one), and having a Guitar Pro arrangement of it helps a lot, too. Although, it’s worth pointing out that this is the only song that has a .gpx for it and no song in their catalog has a MIDI for it, so I’ve had to do my other two songs all by ear and just knowing music theory.
March 2, 2017 at 6:48 am #482129Yeah, seems like it’s just 6/4 but with a looser tempo than the rest of the song. Just gotta map it precisely man, if you need a hand with it feel free to send your files my way. It shouldn’t be too hard though, I don’t imagine you’d have to do anything other than line up your cursor and hit Q on this one. Great song, by the way.
March 2, 2017 at 10:34 am #482135The song is not even close to having a fixed BPM rate, in fact I don’t think you can get away with using one marker per measure. Do things properly: tempo map first, done acccurately, then take care of the instruments.

Well, I’ll give it a try and I’ll see how it goes.

It does, though. You can even look at the RPP. As long as I’m putting in time sig changes, the lines are within the area they need to be, except this one section, which doesn’t have patternized peaks.

Hey man, I can only do and say so much, it’s up to you to do things properly or not. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”> I imported the audio, checked the first measures, it’s clear it’s not even a matter of one marker every n measures but of multiple markers per measure in some cases. The one thing you can be sure is that an improper tempo map will ruin any good authoring you do, but as I said how good the tempo map will be is up to you, so if you want to lay down a marker and be done with it obviously I can only say my piece and let you be. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
March 3, 2017 at 7:33 am #482196I mean, I’ve been doing the best I could given the info I had and experience I’ve garnered over the last two months. I’ve been doing things the way I do because using what I’ve found in tutorials sometimes does more harm than good. My guess is that sometimes tutorials aren’t always one size fits all.
March 3, 2017 at 1:07 pm #482206I’d say you got good advice from one of the best around here and I agree with him that you should tempo map first, and chart later. it will save you tons of problems later on.

I did! I’m very happy and thankful — I just haven’t had the time or lack of background noise to sit down and get back at it.
