Can you guys help a friend for me? Some of his songs aren’t showing up for some reason. Aside from reformatting the stick and trying again, I’m at a loss. Thanks for any help or ideas that you have! Here are 2 of the messages he sent me:

    Message 1:

I’ve done it. I went through the google doc list and downloaded about 350, but when I brought them into RB, it only imported around 250. Have you had any issues with any songs just not being recognized? Are there some that need to be converted somehow? Ones in particular that didn’t make the import are all SOAD and Tool songs. Hard to complain with all the amazing stuff I got, but I wonder if there’s a way to make the ones that were ignored work.

    Message 2:

Super weird. Party Buffalo just won’t let some of the files transfer. They show up as if they had, but when I close it and re-open, they are gone. Tried the transfer with Horizon instead and the exact same thing happened. Every once in a while certain files will stick, but then some of the others just vanish. They just refuse to get along together. Plenty of room on the usb, so it’s not a space issue. Oh well, at least the majority made the trip. Cemetery Gates is one of them.

Help! The songs won’t load for me! What do I do?

There are a few potential causes for this behaviour. See which of the following behaviours applies to you:

The songs show up in Rock Band 3, but do not load: If you’re getting the dirty disc/disc read error, it means you’re running under TU5 or using the Games-on-Demand/MadCatz disc version of Rock Band 3. These won’t work for playing customs on a non-modded console. If the songs crash or otherwise hang, it usually means there is a problem with the .mid file inside the custom package. Contact the custom’s author for troubleshooting.

The songs do not show up at all in Rock Band 3: Check out your removal storage device through the Xbox 360′s storage system. If the songs are listed as Corrupted, there is either a problem with the custom (should not happen for our releases) or the download, or the file is in the wrong spot. If the songs are not listed at all, you may have run into the “256 songs” bug. See the below bullet point.

      What’s this “256 songs” bug?

We recently discovered (or rather, were informed of) a bug wherein the Xbox 360 file management tools choke and die whenever they see more than 256 files in a folder. The Xbox 360 has no such limitation, so we have three possible workarounds:

Solution #1: Get two USB sticks. Designate A as your Main Stick, and B as your Temporary Stick. Place up to 256 customs on B. Connect A and B to your Xbox. Using the Xbox’s storage tools, move the customs from B to A. Repeat for all customs you’re looking to use. Play the game with A plugged in.

Solution #2: If you’re only going to play Rock Band under TU4, you can get away with only one USB stick. Move the songs — 256 or less at a time — from your USB stick to your primary storage device using the Xbox 360′s interface. (Edit: You can do this if you’re going to play under TU5 as well, but there’s no way to differentiate custom from legit track at a glance, and if you load any of the customs you’ll get the disc read error; therefore, we recommend using this only in a TU4 environment.)

Solution #3 (Untested): Someone said they were able to get 256 songs working in the RB3 Saved Game folder and then put other songs in the RB2 Saved Game folder. In theory, if it loads them from all three folders without caring which game they’re actually from, this would let you run 768 customs — 256 in each of RB3, RB2, and RB1 saved game folders. Double this with two USB drives.

Oh so there is a 256 limit? I thought that at first, but then I thought I read somewhere that there wasn’t actually a limit. My bad. I’ll let him know, thanks!

My last count is over 500 songs. If there actually is a file limit, it doesn’t apply to every situation.

By the way, I encountered that error of Party Buffalo not transferring files before. I used Horizon to transfer a couple of files. That somehow sorted out the problem and I went back to Party Buffalo.

It’s an issue with the apps, possibly limited to certain USB devices.

We got more than enough reports of it early on.

There is no hard limit. There is a limit to how many songs the apps can handle.

Yeah, I worded that wrong. I mean that the limit is not absolute. It’s not about the app, definitely. It can be about about the device or a combination of both.

Yeah, just clarifying for the OP and anyone else that may stumble upon it. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>

The first two solutions listed definitely work. Their viability depends on your setup, of course.

              “256 songs†bug

Solution #1: Get two USB sticks.

Solution #3 (Untested): Save CONS in other Rock Band saved game files.

Or Solution 4: Package similar songs into one big pack using LeFluffie.
