I Am making my first custom ever! Yay!
This afternoon i’ve managed to get the Expert guitar charted but im unsure wether its good or not or if i missed something.
At some points into the visualizer I think it goes great with music, but on others im not so convinced. So would anyone with sort of knowledge into this walk me further into it? Like checking it out and let me know how can I improve or if i missed anything from the tutos?
I’ll let the link here in case anyone is able to help:

July 20, 2017 at 3:33 am #488090Congrats on starting work on your first custom!
I’ve moved this to the more fitting “Authoring Tools, Support, & Advice” topic. For any future questions regarding charting please use this topic (or better yet, continue this thread!).
One thing that helped me out a lot when I was first starting was simply experimenting. If a note didn’t look right, either my tempo map was bad or the note was placed in a bad spot. I’d change both until it looked correct. It also helps to do a song that’s fairly easy. Steady tempo, easily-heard notes, nothing fast, etc.

Thanks for moving it!
What I mean its this exactly:
I dont really know why the bars arent perfectly aligned with the notes. Can I get help?
July 20, 2017 at 4:08 am #488093A few things:
1. Nice job on the tempo map. It’s a modern pop song so it’s usually just a matter of finding the initial tempo but still, well done.
2. I’m looking at the guitar chart and I’m not hearing what you’re charting. Both the lead and acoustic seem to be playing something differently.
3. You can’t have connecting notes on guitar like you have in measure 52-60. You’ll have to separate so all the chords match length.
4. Leave a little room after a chord so the player has time to move their hand to the next position (32nd or 16th depending on the tempo).
5. I’m not sure why your notes are off like that other than maybe you copy/pasted them when the marker wasn’t exactly on the measure line. While this is normally not recommended, you can select all (ctrl-A) and hit “Q”, make sure the “Use Grid” setting is selected, and hit “OK”.
Make sure snap-to-grid is on when actually charting (alt-S or the little magnet on the top left of the MIDI window). This prevents notes from not aligning.
July 20, 2017 at 4:11 am #488094your rpp doesn’t show a drums chart like you listed
either way – your stuff should resemble something like this
edit: also listen to the guy above me

Thanks so much for taking the time of checking it out:
1. Thanks, it just came out naturally.
2. I charted kind of what I heard here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do_KbGjpyY0
and i Tought that was the guitar.
3. I had the doubt, but i wasnt sure. Ill fix this ASAP
4. Ok ill try to look into this.
5. In the guitar i think it isnt that noticeable, i fixed the drums cuz yeah, i copy/pasted.
BTW I, updated the link with the DRUMS charted. So i can have a second opinion.

Updated the link with the Drums charted. Would u mind checking them please?
July 20, 2017 at 7:17 am #488104not gonna lie. the drums were a complete trainwreck. you need have the gems to the right of the start of a measure. not to the left.
also you don’t really seem to have an ear for what is being played. remember to slow the playback to hear things better.
also do you have CAT? get that if you don’t
anyways i fixed it. as well as wrote the entire drum track.

How can I slow the playback?
Can u link me to CAT please? If u mean the scripts, i downloaded them but cant get Phyton to work ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_frown.gif” />
July 21, 2017 at 3:45 am #488176move that little slider to the left. double click it to reset it easily.
I installed python and all that junk years ago. I can’t tell someone how to do it. I don’t remember. Just go and read read read. There’s a ton of stuff here to take in.

After hours of trying i’ve managed to get phantom and CAT to work, but i’m still unsure about some things.
a ) Do u chart based on what?
b ) Can I chart based on a MIDI? How?
c ) Whats The EASIEST way to start charting? (Since my ear is so bad guessing what to chart)
d ) In this case (shown before) how would CAT made my work better? What options are the ones that i should use?
Thanks for the help mate. I cant thank u and Bansheeflyer enough.
Here’s the progress. Bansheeflyer charted almost all the guitar & u helped with the drums. Im thinking going bass next. How should I do it?

It’s worth noting that you can chart based off midi’s, if midi’s are available for the song(s) you’ve chosen. But, if you’re having trouble charting by ear, or tempo mapping (or any of the other things you need to do to chart a custom), you’re gonna have trouble using midi’s too. From my experience, a bulk of them suck. They lack tempo maps (or at least 99% of the ones I’ve found are all set to one tempo), and rarely are they 100% accurate, which means you’ll still have to go off and chart it by ear anyways. Also, most midi’s out there are guitar only, so you’d have to work by ear if you wanted anything more.
July 21, 2017 at 4:44 am #488183a ) Do u chart based on what?
Based on what I’m hearing in the song. You have to have a basic understanding of the instruments to be able to chart with any accuracy. Can you tell the difference between a guitar chord and a single note? Can you tell the difference between a snare drum and a tom? Open hi hat and closed? An E and an E sharp?
b ) Can I chart based on a MIDI? How?
It’s possible. Midis help you most with vocal pitches. Some midis can be so well made it takes over 2/3 of the work out of charting vocals. Midis can also help with your guitar/bass tracks, but I takes a lot of work fitting those notes into 5 lanes and still maintain fun/playability. To import a midi into reaper, start a new project, then go to Insert -> Media File and choose your midi. Like I said it will still take a lot of work to get it RB ready.
c ) Whats The EASIEST way to start charting? (Since my ear is so bad guessing what to chart)
Familiarize yourself as best you can with existing customs. Download other people’s RPPs and look at them closely to see why they did what they did. Check the WIP sub forum for RPPs to look at. Charting is never easy to learn. It does become easier as you learn more and power through it. Many people hit a wall and give up. You need to have the determination to keep going.
d ) In this case (shown before) how would CAT made my work better? What options are the ones that i should use?
CAT doesn’t make your work better. It just takes care of a lot of the tedious stuff. Basic difficulty reductions, Creating Phrase markers for vocals. Creating drums animations. Changing lyrics to unpitched. When used right it could save you a good hour of work you’d have to do manually.
As far as making your bass track, just try to use your best common sense. Does it sound like a really low-pitched bass note? Chart it to green. Does it sound really high? Chart it orange. When authoring bass, there’s a trick that works really well to hear the bass notes. Click the FX tab on the Song Audio track and find ReaEQ. Change the type to Low Pass and enable it. Here’s a picture.
Anywho that’s all I’m gonna say. I’ve already spent too much time helping you make I song I don’t even like. I wish you the best and hope you stick with it.
