Hard drive failure… how to extract data from my Wii BINs?

I hope you guys can help me! Recently, for the first time in my life, I had a hard drive die. I hadn’t backed up my Rock Band work in about 3 weeks, and in that time I had made significant progress on some songs and done some spring cleaning to my Rock Band library. Fortunately, I have all of those generated BIN files on my Wii’s SD card. But what can I do with those BINs?

Ideally, I’d like to extract whatever I can from them so I don’t lose any work. Peggy Sang the Blues by Frank Turner and Days are Forgotten by Kasabian would be the big casualties… I had done the vocals and bass for both of them and that’s a lot of time that would be lost

Can anybody shed any light on how I can get some data out of the BINs, and what data, exactly, I would be getting? I know I wouldn’t be extracting Reaper files…

I assume you’ve tried exploring the C3CONTools? If it’s just the Wii files I believe the tools can convert them back into a CON where you can extract the MIDI from there.

I went through the C3 Con Tools, yes, but I didn’t find a helpful option… I know there has to be a way, but I’m unsure of what or where it is. And I only have the BIN files, not the APPs.

            Nope.

You make CONs by having all the component files. I did very little with Wii and I don’t think any of my code deals with app and bin files. Definitely don’t have a handy browser extractor tool like with CONs.

That sucks! Is the hard drive dead dead, or corrupted? If it still comes on, there are free data recovery apps out there that could possibly help if you are able to hook it up to another working machine.

I lost a couple nearly complete charts once because I forgot to sync my customs folder before a reformat. It’s no fun to make a chart twice.

I remembered some talk about this, but couldn’t find the post so I did a google search and found this: https://sites.google.com/site/parannoyedwii/projects/dlc-packer-unpacker

I never experimented with this but it seems that it’s what you’re looking for.

I don’t know how usefull this information is, but app files are extremely easy to unpack using u8it which I believe is included with the C3 Wii packer. Keeping those might be a good option.

I turned off my computer to run an errand. I came home, turned on the PC, and it took way longer to boot up (minutes versus seconds) and made a constant beep-click-beep-click-beep-click-beep-click-beep-click sound for a few minutes… until it would finally cease doing that. The beep-click happens every time I begin the booting process, be it a cold or warm boot.

I thought it was a memory error. Ran a diagnostic and got nothin’. Then I went to put on some music… and realized the hard drive wasn’t being detected!

As it turns out, it was the hard drive making that sound. The solid state drive (with the operating system) is fine, but the hard drive has something wrong with it. I am pretending a friend can find out what’s wrong with it and fix it. Until then, I’ve disconnected it and hooked up an older hard drive on which I can store my data. I am hoping the lost data (basically, only hours of Rock Band work) can be recovered.

Seriously. This is a big morale-sapper. So until I have a definitive answer about the hard drive, I am going to pause all of my work on customs. I’m not going to chart something twice if I don’t really have to… I’ll just be patient. I have plenty of Netflix to catch up on anyway.

Hoo, boy… I had enough trouble getting customs to work on my Wii at all. This is intimidating. I downloaded the software and installed a hex editor, but this stuff is above me (which is why I made my Packing Like a Pro Wii thread… to make the hard-to-understand stuff understandable!).

I assume the ID it asks for is the same as what’s in my ng_id.txt file that I use for packing customs. But what is this PRNG thing? Never heard of that… any hand-holding you could do would be appreciated

I honestly have no idea what this is, did some quick research and couldn’t find what I was looking for… Seems to be seome sort of randomly generated number…

                Maybe Stack knows?

Edit: good thing you familiarised with hex editors, it seems you need one to retrive it: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii#Console_Keys_and_keys.bin

Unrelated to PRNG but it seems people don’t NEED to download a DLC to get their ng_id. It seems that it is also in the keys.bin. Interesting stuff.

It’s definitely possible because I’ve cracked open most of the DLC BINs myself to perform upgrades. I can’t remember where I got these tools and how to set it up though, but I can just send you want I think you’ll need.
