Tremendous release Jimi369!

“These Arms of Mine” is such a great vocal. Can’t wait to play.

Remembering the “Father” of Shock Rock

After missing his birthday on July 18th the next opportunity to give mr Jalacy Hawkins some well deserved attention was Halloween.

So here we are: a three pack of songs, including his greatest commercial succes, I Put a Spell On You.

A powerful song, of which the most well known interpretation by the artist himself is said to originate from a drunk recording session. It is also a song that has been covered by a whole lot of other recording artists, such as Nina Simone -who, incidentally, could do with a more prominent place in the Rock Band library- and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

This song doesn’t have more than one singer, but as an experiment I put a less simplified version of the vocals on harmonies to see if it would work and left it in. Keys are an interpretation of the saxophone and trumpets.

After I Put a Spell On You Screamin’Jay Hawkins was never really able to replicate its succes. He released several singles and albums for multiple labels, but those songs didn’t set the charts alight.

She Put the Whammee on Me was the closest thing to another hit he got, in the States at least.
A later interpretation of this song The Whammy, was released before in 2014. This is a complete remake of that custom.

The last song in this pack was banned in at least several states and was a modest hit in Europe where Screamin’ Jay remained popular long after he ceased to be in the US.

Constipation Blues is a song about a man sharing his tale of a particularly unpleasant bowel movement. It is a lot more tastefully done than the title might imply and really rather funny.

The custom has its problems: It is certainly playable, but the least polished and perhaps more suitable for the work in progress forum. The sound starts too early and the vocals are stupidly hard to get a perfect score on. This is also a song that really needs pro keys, as a delightful solo now goes uncharted.

Still it is a fun song to play.

Despite not being the most succesful recording artist in history, with his vocal skills and outlandish stage persona mister Hawkins enjoyed succes and popularity as a performing artist and a ladies’ man.

As always, constructive feedback to make these customs better is genuinely appreciated.

Please take these customs for what they are: a far from perfect tribute to a great performer which I hope you all will enjoy despite the flaws that are present.

The is the customs equivalent of sitting down to sip an outrageously rare red wine vintage: priceless.

For the longest time I thought CCR was the originators of “I Put A Spell On You” until years ago I discovered the Screamin Jay Hawkins version in Singstar. Very cool release.

You have some cool releases, Jimi369. Thanks!!

Thanks for these. We don’t see enough bluesy music so I’m grateful

                Good ol’ Alligator Wine!

                (You’re being waytoo kind though)

I did not know he was on Singstar, if I had the vocals part could be better. I’ll see if I can somehow track down a midi from that version. Thanks for sharing! Glad you like the release and I’m glad to know that this isn’t mr. Hawkins’s first foray into rhythm games.

Thank you for your reaction(s) I really hope you enjoy the release. If anything comes up as odd or just plain wrong. Please let me know.

I’ll also need photocopies of the domestic disturbance reports when you actually start singing these.

You are very welcome and I agree on the bluesy music. With it’s often very well defined and distinguishable instruments, blues songs seem very chartable and satisfying to play to me. Maybe not always the obvious choice for the middle of the party but I can definitely see a lot of songs working well near the end.

I’m listening to some Muddy Waters right now and I heard somewhere I still have Red House to finish up and rerelease

I play mostly guitar and blues is perfect for fun without being too hard. Never understood how red house was wasn’t released officially, such a great song so hope you one day get to finish it. Either way I’m grateful for whatever you put out

I didn’t realize the wife already beat me here in responding…..she just tells me ‘download this’ and I say ‘yes dear’

Seriously man, I’ve not been exposed to SJH and for the life of me, I’m not sure why, but she obviously knows something I don’t.

We’ll give these a spin next time we play. Thanks for sharing!

Massive thanks for your latest batch of customs. I am super excited to have SJH tracks to play. The representation of different styles of music across C3 is just fantastic and you, sir, have excellent taste.

Merry Christmas everybody. Seeing the community banding together and the donations coming in during the C3-thon was and is fantastic. Have a great holiday and a splendid 2018.
