Grub, the fact that we didn’t use the same picture for the album cover is a major oversight

But seriously, it’s been a great project and it’s amazing to have this entire album in the game. It’s a big album for me and it’s been an honor to chart 6 songs from it. Hoping people will enjoy it as much as I did. And amazing job from grub who lead this project of finishing the album!

    Day Eighteen Slot 3: Single

    OD/5-Lane Keys: GreenPanda
A leftover track from some Marillion I was working on half a year ago, was pretty close but needed some more finishing touches. One of the singles off this fine sort-of concept album released in the late 80s, it follows a, sort-of related to the concept, character who is having trouble with employment and dealing with his family in the process.

Blonde Redhead – For The Damaged Coda

    Author Notes

This song was released as part of “Chart-a-Thon”, a non-profit charity event arranged for a good cause, gathering authors from various rhythm games such as Clone Hero, Beat Saber, Audica, and of course Rock Band. It is encouraged that if you download this song, you should possibly consider donating at least 90¢ to http://chartathon.com. Don’t worry; all proceeds raised from this event go directly to the American Cancer Society. Happy rhythm gaming!

Most of you probably know this as Evil Morty’s Theme from Rick and Morty, because this played during a significant part during the show. I admit I don’t know too much Blonde Redhead outside of this particular song, sorry!

AJFOne23 did drums, I did everything else!

Next is a venerable band that needs no introduction:

Sticking with my general theme of keys-heavy songs, my (likely) final song for this event is from 1995’s Balance. Balance was the final studio album with Hagar as lead singer. There were not a ton of hits from Balance, but Not Enough was a biggie for them along the lines of When It’s Love or Love Walks In.

    It’s a Beautiful Day

Here is a 4-pack from my favorite among the bands that almost made it. Almost.

The band formed in the late 60’s, in San Francisco, and was built around three super-star musical talents. A husband-wife duo, David and Linda LaFlamme, and Patty Santos. The LaFlammes were both classically trained musicians. He even played in a major orchestra for a while. He sang, and played his violin for the band, she handled keyboards. Santos also sang, with the voice (and the looks) of a goddess.

They released their first album, simply titled It’s a Beautiful Day, in 1969, and their second album, Marrying Maiden, in 1970. Both albums sold well, cracking the top fifty in US album sales. The first album was short – only seven songs – but four of them are fantastic. I consider it one of the best debut albums of all time. Marrying was much weaker, with only one really momentous song.

David did most of the song-writing, on both albums, sometimes with other co-authors. The three weaker songs on their first album were written exclusively by David. Linda co-wrote three more, and one was co-authored by a jazz musician, Vince Wallace.

    I’ll start with that song:

    Drums are by AJFOne23.

You can download the song here:

    Welcome to Plagiarism 101!

Listen to the song (in the preview above). Does it sound familiar? Try adding in some lyrics, like

Sweet child in time, you’ll see the line

That’s right. Bombay Calling and the Deep Purple mega-hit Child in Time, are clones. Coincidence? Hardly! Deep Purple readily admitted that they stole the melody and built their hit around that.

There may be more plagiarism at work here. Wallace, in published documents, claims that he wrote the song many years earlier, that he taught it to David, and that David did none of the writing at all. David stole half the credit and all of the royalties!

Any truth to that? Well … I’ve listened to an earlier version of this song, and that version sounds much different from the final release. I am convinced that LaFlamme made many changes, and deserves credit.

As to royalties, it is fitting that I am releasing this on Friday the 13th. IABD were plagued by bad luck throughout their career. I’ll describe one example later. But, for this, they signed with a disreputable record label, and they had to fight for years to collect even a pittance in royalties for themselves.

My next offering is the first and best song from Marrying Maiden:

This is the best song on the album, and a real blast to play. Grab this one! However …

    Welcome To Plagiarism 102!

Listen to this one. Sound familiar? It should. This is, note for note, Wring That Neck, by Deep Purple. Yep. Steal one from us, and we’ll steal one from you!

So, why is it that the best song on their second album is stolen? What happened to the song-writing prowess on display a year earlier?

Simple, the band was drifting apart. Santos was losing interest and would leave soon (and, following the terrible luck chasing IABD, die in a car accident). The LaFlammes were divorcing. Linda had already left the band. Chalk it up to chemistry. Or, maybe, chalk it up to Linda. Perhaps she was the real song-writing genius. Who knows. But, by 1970, the band had lost much of their power.

Or chalk it up to more bad luck. The Woodstock producers wanted one of the new San Francisco bands in their concert, but had only one slot available. Two bands made the final cut, and one was chosen … by a coin flip!

Think on that for a moment. Imagine, in some Sci-Fi parallel universe, the coin went the other way. IABD wowed the crowds at Woodstock. Patty and Linda stayed. Their second album was even better than their first, and they are now Hall of Fame members.

Meanwhile, that other obscure Frisco band drifted apart. They only released one really good album, and I am trying to get you to download a few of their little-known songs for Chart-a-thon 2019.

So, what is the name of this other unknown new band? The one that played at Woodstock? Santana.

I’ll close this off with two of the Linda gems from their first album:

    A very pretty chamber piece,

I still get chills when I hear this song – it is a masterpiece.
