Hello everyone, today we begin our festival where we will party like it’s 1999!

 

 

Here at Rome (no, not that Rome) we’re beginning at the end of the decade by performing songs from Woodstock ’99! In this year of 2019 and the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival we return to the past of one of the most well-known iterations of the Festival, featuring a plethora of songs that released in the 90s!

 

To kick off today’s festival we’re bringing in a six-song Suede set!

So now it’s time to introduce, in my humble opinion, the best Brit pop group of all time – sorry Blur and Oasis – and one of the best bands in the 90’s – Suede!

Suede kick-started the Brit pop revolution of the ’90s, bringing English indie pop/rock music away from shoegazing and the dance-pop of Madchester, and reinstating such conventions of British pop as mystique and the three-minute single. Equally inspired by the glam crunch of David Bowie and the romantic bedsit pop of the Smiths, Suede developed a sweeping, guitar-heavy sound that was darkly sensual, sexually ambiguous, melodic, and unabashedly ambitious.

Suede are a special band, that somehow manages to be simultaneously catchy perfect pop, and dark, meaningful, ambitious glam-rock music. Led by frontman Brett Anderson – one of my favorite singers of all time – they’re just overall a brilliant force. I’ve charted a few of their songs in the past for several projects – “the Wild Ones” for Valentine’s Day, while “Life is Golden” and “Outsiders” featured in previous C3X releases, “Trash” and “The Drowners” were pre C3X releases – but it’s time they get a pack of their own.

Gameplay wise, Suede are pretty special too. They’re fun on all instruments, but IMO the biggest winner here is the guitar tracks, which are absolutely unique. Suede guitarist Bernard Butler (later replaced by Richard Oakes, who kept a similar style) pretty much NEVER plays strumming, power chords or any of the “regular” guitar techniques. Instead, he’s blasting out awesome lines, riffs, melodies through the ENITRE SONGS – which means they’re basically a bit like 5 minute guitar solos. There’s 11 Suede tracks available now – 45 minutes of music – and I doubt a single minute of it is regular, “boring” rhythm players. Guitar players – you’re going to have an absolute blast.

Suede – So Young

Previously released as a drum only custom, this is the first song of Suede’s debut album, and what an opening this is! A perfect britpop anthem that showcase their style and abilities perfectly. Singer Anderson says “I used to eulogize that sense of youth as powerful, vital energy. That’s what So Young is. Let’s ride the razor’s edge of youth”. And this is a vital, catchy song with the energies of youth and it’s really cool for every instrument. So let’s chase the dragon!

Suede – Animal Nitrate

The second song of their debut (right after “So Young”), this is one of Suede’s biggest singles. It’s classic Suede – a huge catchy chorus, brilliant guitar lines, dark lyrics about drugs and sex that are extremely rare in such hits. Anderson said this song is about a “period when drugs were taking the place of people. Sex was just a hollow, vacuous thing which was made full and three-dimensional by the fact that I was taking a huge amount of drugs”. It also made headlines with a controversial music video which included two men kissing.

The song was a huge chart success and one of Suede’s first hits. Reviews at the time called it “their album’s strongest, an irresistible mix of strange guitar riffery, manic rhythm section and a personality desperately craving to be noticed”. It remains very highly regarded today – NME named the song the 14th best song of the 90’s and the 43rd best Indie Anthem ever, Q magazine placed it at number 97 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks, Paste listed the song at number 29 in its 50 Best Britpop Songs.

The Guardian included the song in their “10 of the Best” Britpop songs, writing that “Butler’s opening riff is one of the most undeniable in pop”. Louder Sound included Butler’s guitar solo at no. 94 in their list of the “100 greatest guitar solos in rock”.

Suede – New Generation

Moving forward to Suede’s second album, “Dog Man Star”, which is in the eyes of many (including myself) their true masterpiece. It’s their biggest, darkest and most ambitious album. I feel my custom sadly underrepresent this great album – some of it’s best songs (“Still Life” “The 2 Of Us”) just wouldn’t translate well to RB format, while the 10-minutes epic “The Asphalt World” proved too ambitious to chart in this timeframe.

But I did chart “New Generation” – the beautiful single from this record. It’s a great catchy pop song, with absolutely fantastic guitar work, some nice horn additions, great lyrics, and for some weird reason it’s a very emotional song for me. I don’t know, this chorus just gets me. It’s great.

Suede – Beautiful Ones

That one needs no introduction surely?? Their biggest single and biggest hit. You know this one. It’s a classic. Give it a go.

Suede – Filmstar

Another classic single from the “Coming Up” album, one of the 5 singles from this album – all of them became top 10 hits. This story about the Hollywood fantasy/mystery isn’t one of their deepest or darkest songs, but it’s catchy as fuck and it’s surely fun to play and sing along!

Suede – Saturday Night

Finishing this pack off with the classic Suede closer. “Saturday Night” is the last song on the “Coming Up” album, and it’s yet another top 10 hit for Suede. It’s a beautiful, tender, melodic and romantic ballad, as Brett Anderson strayed from his usual obsessions of malfunctioning relationship and dark sexual fantasies, to write a simple, straight forward love song. As he himself said: “The sentiment of ‘Saturday Night’ was something I’d never tried to do before, which was finding beauty in something ordinary and average. Before it was sort of casting myself as the kind of tortured Byronic hero”.

And he did it brilliantly, resulting in a romantic, beautiful song and a perfect finish to this pack.

Suede setlist suggestion

They Might Be Giants – Twisting

Short and fast, this final single from the Flood album is probably the closest song to a more “traditional” rock sound, a bit different from their typical odd-sounding jazzy fusion. The song references both The Young Fresh Fellows and The dB’s, two groups that influenced the sound of the track itself. While recording the song, guest drum machine programmer Alan Bezozi accidentally erased the entire drum track – frontman John Flansburgh then had to recreate the track from scratch.

Blink-182 – M+M’s

This is Blink-182’s first single ever released. It is fast-paced and has difficult parts for both guitar and drums. Try to master the real cool guitar riff played throughout.

Smashing Pumpkins – Appels + Oranjes

In the middle of Adore lies this electronic track driven by a rhythmic drum beat. It stands out as one of the more lively songs on Adore, but still retains the album’s dark tone.

Beastie Boys – Sure Shot

“Sure Shot” was the 3rd single off the popular Ill Communication album, featuring a catchy flute loop played by jazz flautist Jeremy Steig (fun fact, in Shrek Forever After the Pied Piper, also played by Steig, plays this loop). Otherwise it’s a typical Beastie Boys song with very boring, repetitive (yet somehow catchy) instruments. That being said, if you can find two pals to sing with you, you’ll have a blast. I promise.

 

There are four singers technically – Mike D, Ad Rock, MCA, and Mario Caldato. Since Mario’s lines are few and far between, the Beastie Boys share his duties.

 

dc Talk – Colored People

One of the enduring themes of the Woodstock festivals has been peace and harmony with your fellow human beings. dc Talk, the self-proclaimed “2 Honks & a Negro”, hammered that theme home with “Colored People”, a song from their best-known album Jesus Freak. Red, yellow, black or white, we’re all colored people, and we all live on the same world. We should try to get along while doing so.

 

Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town

From Vedder himself” It’s kind of about a lady, and she’s getting on in years, and she’s stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay ’cause then they’re the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there. So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in…And then she sees him, and at first she doesn’t even remember who he is, and then she realizes who it is. She’s just too embarrassed to say ‘hello’.”

Despite never being released as a single, the song peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 17 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Manic Street Preachers – You Stole the Sun from My Heart

“You Stole the Sun From My Heart” is a brilliant 1999 single from the Manics, that was described (quite accurately IMO) as a mix of Nirvana and New Order. A combination of drum machines and rousing electric guitars, all championed by the huge voice of James Dean Bradfield. Instrumentally, it shines on all instruments, and includes some really cool harmony lines too (harmonies are slightly different in every chorus – respect to the band for that!). It’s a great song that any fan of the Manics or of 90’s rock in general should really enjoy.

INXS – Beautiful Girl

The fifth single off the album, keyboardist Andrew Farriss wrote the song inspired by the birth of his newborn daughter. U2’s Bono performs guitar and backing vocals on the track. Recently the song appears to have made a resurgence, peaking at #77 on the ARIA Singles Chart in 2014.

Rusted Root – Send Me on My Way

Believe it or not, this song was actually performed at Woodstock ’99! Perhaps best known as the “song from that thing”, I can almost guarantee you know this one. It’s been in various movies such as Ice Age and Matilda, as well as television shows like Chuck and New Girl. Unfortunately for some, this version of the song is not the one used in all of those things. There were two versions of the song: the original version from Rusted Root’s debut album “Cruel Sun” (this custom) and the rerecorded single version from their second album “When I Woke” (the one from all of the movies/TV shows).

I don’t understand why they felt the need to rerecord the song as it was, in my opinion, much better on the first attempt. When I revisited the song after not hearing it for years, I somehow came across the “Cruel Sun” version first and thought “Woah! Did this song always go this hard?” Now whenever I hear the more-popular version, it just feels empty. Hopefully no one gets offended that I went for the lesser-known recording, but I suppose if you’ve got a problem with it, you can always make a custom of the other one.

And with that concludes our revisit to Woodstock ’99! There was some great stuff played today with staples of the 1990s! Thank you all for coming and we hope to see you again soon!
