This week we’re celebrating one of the biggest touring metal festivals there is. Ozzfest! Since it’s inception in 1996, hundreds of hard rock and metal bands have graced its stages. From the unknown and never heard from again bands to the titans of metal, Ozzfest has had a wide variety of acts play. My first concert was Ozzfest 2003 at which I got the worst sunburn I’ve ever had (my forearms are still tan to this day). So this week we’re here to celebrate just a few of the bands that have made heads bang all around the country!
First up we have MrPrezident bringing us The Sword, who were on Ozzfest in 2008!
Ozzfest alumni THE SWORD from Austin, Texas, changed up their trademark doom-metal for the 2015 album High Country, pulling hard rock influences from Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin instead of Black Sabbath.
Opening with the groovy yet brief “Unicorn Farm”, a brick wall of synthesizer tone melts into the guitars and bass on “Empty Temples” which fly at such a tremendous hum that one has to remember to hone in on drummer Jimmy Vela’s thumping tempos, which are not to be missed in their own rights.

Next up we have FUGGNUTZ bringing us Meshuggah, who were on the tour in 2001 and 2002!
New Millennium Cyanide Christ is the most well-known song on Meshuggah’s third album, Chaosphere, and is a staple in Meshuggah’s live performances.

Don’t think FUGGNUTZ is done because he’s bringing some Slipknot too! They were on the tour in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2013, and the Ozzfest Meets Knotfest in 2016!
Eyeless is a fan-favorite Slipknot song for its aggressive energy and heavy riff. If you happen to have my old drums-only custom of this, please re-download this one, as it has various fixes.

Now we come to me, naginalJJ. If you know anything about me then you already know who I’m about to bring. They were on the tour in 1999, 2013, and 2017. This is my favorite album from them. Anytime one of their songs get stuck in my head, 9 times out of 10 it’s from this album. It has my favorite song from them as well (Deathblow). So without further ado, the next chapter in the Deftones discography project! Special thanks to my collaborators on these songs Septekka who did Tempo mapping and drums and BansheeFlyer who did vocals and keys!

Whew that was a lot of songs. Now although I may have had the biggest release of this week, we can’t have Ozzfest without the Prince of Fucking Darkness himself! And it just wouldn’t be right to not have him close out the week. So please enjoy our grand finale, brought to you by ws54!
Black Sabbath’s 5th album displays a maturing of the band and is highly regarded by critics and band members themselves. It is often referred to as Sabbath’s last great album. The album experiments with strings, keyboards, synthesizers and more progressive arrangements, all without losing the essence of who they are. For me personally, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the album, hits the sweet spot. It is not too dark sounding as their earlier albums were, and the songs are more melodic. The entire album is recommended, but the title track and this song, Killing Yourself To Live, are the two absolute essentials.

thanks for the tones album. funny you said that’s your favourite. I think it’s a very solid album and better than gore for sure but i think it’s rated as least favourite among fans and sales numbers…
