Welcome to C3X-Canada Day 2019!
On behalf of all the Canadian authors and users of the site, I welcome you all to join our celebration of music. As an esteemed contributor of C3X I am proud to have worked with so many talented and hard working authors, from my countrymen to my friends across the globe. We hope that every one of you, regardless of music tastes, can enjoy the celebration of partnership and dedication, as we bring you a full 12 song set list, featuring the best Canadian music that our great country has to offer. As Canada welcomes all who come, I welcome you as citizens of C3X.

OPENING ARTISTS
See Spot Run “Weightless”

Montreal rockers See Spot Run were technically the first band to play at the former Air Canada Centre in Toronto, opening for the main act The Tragically Hip on February 22, 1999, one day after the Raptors played the Heat and two days after the Leafs took on the Canadiens in the same arena. “Weightless” was their highest charting single, and was recorded and released simultaneously in both English and French languages.
Rusty “Groovy Dead”

“Groovy Dead” was the second single from 1995’s ‘Fluke’, from Nova Scotia’s Rusty. The album is widely considered to be one of the essential monuments of the Canadian rock landscape. When the band handed Atlantic USA the demos for what would become their second album, the label asked them to write another complete record as they didn’t hear a “hit”. The band refused, the label parted ways with the band, Rusty returned to indie status in Canada, where they continued to record and release music.
Pure “Spiritual Pollution”

Another sarcastic drugged out clan of Gen-X’ers, but funnier, smarter and catchier than the rest. The band’s debut ‘Purafunalia’ was produced by Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison, and gained nationwide recognition while riding the wave of 90’s alt-rock.
Grapes of Wrath “You May Be Right”

If you were a Canadian teenage girl in the early 90s, chances are the Grapes of Wrath made your knees weak. Chalk it up to the Vancouver band’s boingy, beautiful curls and jangly, Byrdsy folk pop, which MuchMusic spun in heavy rotation. Released in 1991, the album “These Days” spawned the band’s highest charting single, “You May Be Right”, and the band’s tour in support of the album was notable for including an emerging singer/songwriter named Sarah McLachlan.
Sarah McLachlan “Angel”

Before those poor, neglected puppies tugged at your heartstrings, and before Nicolas Cage declared himself a celestial being, there was this song about heroin. That’s right, for once the urban legend claiming a gentle love song was really about drugs turned out to be true. However, unlike what those conspiracy theorists would have you believe, this was no love song to heroin, but about heroin, dedicated to those unfortunate musicians who fell victim to the drug’s false promises. As she began writing songs for what would become her fourth album, Sarah McLachlan read an article about how musicians, searching for release from the pressures of stardom and the machinations of the music industry, were turning to heroin in greater numbers. Some, like Jonathan Melvoin, touring keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins, never got the chance to turn back before an overdose claimed their lives. Though she herself had never turned to hard drugs, McLachlan could understand and empathize with that search for release, that hope of finding an “Angel”. The words and music flowed quickly then, and in two days she had a song that represented her hope that these musicians, and indeed anyone overwhelmed by the world, would find the comfort they needed.

From the double platinum “Hell to Pay”, this features guest appearances by none other than songwriter George Harrison, ELO’s Jeff Lynne and keyboardist Paul Shaffer.
Joel Plaskett Emergency “Fashionable People”

Multi-talented musician Joel Plaskett clarified that the album’s title ‘Ashtray Rock’ is not a genre, but an actual location in the forest west of Clayton Park, Nova Scotia – where teenagers go to get drunk – and the album was therefore a concept album about two friends growing up in Halifax, forming a band, falling for the same girl, breaking up the band and have a final falling out. The album also recounts the story of Joel’s first band, ‘Thrush Hermit’.

54-40 “Assoholic”

The ‘Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret’ was a supper club in Vancouver, BC from 1953 to 1993, and was famous for its massive neon sign, one of the most detailed and intricate pieces of neon signwork to be found in all of Canada. “Smiley’s” was unique in that it was granted a special license to operate one hour later than most other bars. The band purchased the sign when the restaurant closed, took it on tour across Canada, and later donated it to the Royal Vancouver Museum where it still sits today.
The Watchmen “Stereo”

Winnipeg’s The Watchmen were frequent openers for The Tragically Hip, and co-headlined a national tour with Big Wreck in the mid-90’s. “Stereo” was one of the first major label singles in Canada to be released exclusively on the internet, and the CD for the album included a unique key to access secret areas of the band’s website.
The Tragically Hip “Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park”

What’s troubling Gus? Gus was a 700 pound polar bear and media icon for the Central Park Zoo in New York City, viewed by over 20 million people during his lifetime. He came to public notice when he began obsessively swimming in circles for many days, not long after the loss of his lifelong mate, Lily. Visitors described him as “neurotic”, “depressed”, and “bipolar”, a symbol of the stress of living in NYC. As part of his treatment, Gus was the first animal in history to be prescribed the drug Prozac.
Big Wreck “Blown Wide Open”

From the double platinum “In Loving Memory Of…”, this unforgettable song was originally recorded in Toronto at Presence Studios, and intended as a demo version, however Atlantic decided to release the song exactly as it was.
Triumph “Magic Power”

1981’s ‘Allied Forces’ is considered by many to be Triumph’s signature record, from a massively successful career that spanned 16 albums, 18 gold and 9 platinum awards. In 1996, the band donated the profits from the song “Magic Power” to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
